EXCLUSIVE: After one of the longest courtships in recent TV history, TNT is prepared to proceed with its Dallas reboot without original star Larry Hagman over salary issues. Hagman and fellow Dallas alums Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy were first approached by TNT and Warner Horizon TV about joining a potential updated Dallas series in late summer 2009 when the project was put in development. A year later, at the beginning of September this year, TNT ordered 3 pilots, including Dallas. The reboot, written and executive produced by Cane creator Cynthia Cidre, was described by the network as focusing “on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers J.R. and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance.” The subsequent breakdown for the pilot listed the characters of J.R.’s son, John Ross, and Bobby and Pam Ewing’s adopted son, Christopher, as the leads, while Duffy’s Bobby, Hagman’s J.R. and Gray’s Sue Ellen were down as supporting. TNT has since cast the other two pilots ordered at the same as Dallas, Perception and the untitled Allan Loeb project, as well as another one, Bird Dog, which it greenlighted almost 2 months later. But there has been virtually no movement on Dallas as TNT and Warner Horizon had been looking to lock in the original actors before casting the leads. While Gray and Duffy had agreed to join the pilot, the network and the studio have not been able to reach a deal with Hagman who has been holding out for more money. (Make that a lot of money.) With the situation at a stalemate more than 3 months in, I hear the project’s producers have come up with an alternative plan for the project that doesn’t include Hagman, with J.R. represented only through archive footage from the original series. And I hear that TNT brass really liked the revised script by Cidre that doesn’t feature present-day J.R., which is said to be as good as the original script. Negotiations with Hagman continue and there is still a good chance that he will ultimately sign on, but he doesn’t have a big leverage anymore as the producers and the network are moving to cast the other roles and shoot the pilot with or without him. Warners and TNT have already started seeing people for the leads on tape in New York. Meanwhile, Hagman just won $1.1 million in an arbitration ruling against Citigroup (plus $10 million in punitive damages he plans to give to charities), and he also recently signed on to guest star in an episode of Desperate Housewives.

Hagman is schooling the execs on negotiations. The J.R. character is central to the series. I predict that they will cough up some extra cash. I imagine that Hagman knows what he’s doing. Even if they don’t pay, Hagman can walk away as he has nothing more to prove to anyone. Frankly I would rather see a new Jeannie reboot. Barbara Eden can probably still rock the Jeannie outfit.
Meanwhile…for gods sake Larry, trim your eyebrows. It’s like watching two caterpillars dance when you speak.
He sure was good in I Dream of Jeannie, as Major Nelson. He and Major Healy were swingers in the 60′s always chasing girls.
given how sooner or later the creators of the dallas update will have to address jr. not being seen. by either using old foot age from the original they should at least try to work it it out where if Larry is not going to be involved at all at least pay him enough for a cameo since fans will if the update takes off will be asked why does jr not make a house call to south fork.
i wish they had cast barbara eden in desperate housewives instead of polly bergen – but i do love her – just to see hagman and eden back together again….c’mon someone do something with the 2 of them…bill daily is still around too..
What about the original kids who played Christopher and John Ross? Joshua Harris and Omri Katz should reprise their roles…now that would be interesting!
Larry stood the entire industry on its ear when he demanded a record breaking salary, and he was worth every penny. But that was Network, and cable shows don’t have the same budgets so Hagman better get a grip of the situation if he really wants to work. Some of the industry’s finest actors are on the cable networks. Even though he became a caricature of himself in the later years of the show, he’s really an excellent actor and will make the show a joy to watch if the words are well written. Give him some credit and let him chew up th scenery. Linda Gray looks fantastic and so does Patrick Duffy. People will tune in to see the old cast just to satisfy their curiosity, but will story lines involving the kids keep them coming back week after week? Cynthia Cidre’s a good writer who understands the heart and blood of Ewings but she’d be trying to attract a whole new generation that seems to only care about vampires…Although it was over the top glamorous back then, the work that we did on Dallas 30 years ago will look dated and silly in flashbacks.
Well, there is “I Dream of Jeannie”… :-b
I care. I don’t think this new series has as good a chance without J.R.’s presence. Having him on the show makes it seem like the ultimate official endorsement. Is it really Dallas without J.R.?
You know why they need Hagman? Look at all these posts–he generates buzz for this show–positive and negative.
As for a “clash” between the cousins, how can that truly happen without a “clash” between the uncles? Plot 101.
Having Larry Hagman not a part of the Dallas remake after the death of Barbara Bel Geddes won’t be the same without the scheming JR Ewing & all the conflict he bought to the original tv series
1. Battlestar Galactica “a series that lasted for 4 years and 75 episodes and got GREAT critical acclaim” lol! the Sci-Fi channel has always had a problem in canceling series they don’t pay to produce… like Stargate, the original series was great only the first three seasons but they waited until season 10 to cancel it. Until Warehouse 13 came along the SciFi channel had no “real” programming. “Warehouse 13 is the most watched show in the history of the SciFi channel”–their own words.
2. “Nikita’s been greenlit for a full season. Not going anywhere anytime soon” — how many HUNDREDS of series get “greenlit” to be canceled after only one season or even after a few episodes? You need to get real on this one.
3. “Trust me, the reasons you gave as 90210 being a “so-so hit” aren’t correct. None of ‘em were meant to be full-time regulars.” trust you, not! Jennie Garth is a regular on the show–and the reason why the others were not meant to be regulars is the reason why no watched the show anymore. Ask Jason Priestly, “Jennie Garth Attempts to Convice Jason Priestley to Join Her on “90210″” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV5S0LzaCh4 — if try to debate this one you will lose badly. I repeat, ‘The Show is a so-so hit because of JENNIE GARTH, TORI SPELLING AND SHANNEN DOHERTY all from the real Beverly Hills 90210. This is WHY TNT wants Larry Hagman.’
“One last thing, Chris…save the political jabs for ANOTHER website. This ain’t it, junior.” you just answered my comment already… you ARE a liberal.
The next crazy think we will probably find out is that Sue Ellen was recast with a male actor dressed in drag. LOL. Seriously, Linda Gray is the only one who can play Sue Ellen. She made Sue Ellen. Without Linda Gray, we wouldn’t have the tv icon, Sue Elen Ewing. She acted circles around the rest of the cast.
Linda Gray acted circles around Larry Hagman? Or Barbara Bel Geddes? Or Howard Keel?
What have you been smoking?
Yes Miffy, she sure did. After recently watching season one threw six, I was amassed at how Linda Gray really stold most of the scenes. Maybe you should reacquaint yourself with the show. I’ll agree that Miss Gray, unfortunately isn’t in the same legendary league as Bel Geddes, Keel and Hagman, but she really should be. Gray was again wonderful, onstage, performing in the Graduate and Terms of Endearment.Linda got a late start in the entertainment industry. She started taking acting classes in her mid-30′s and landed the part of Sue Ellen at the late age of 39. Her A- typical hollywood success story should be an inspiration to many.I should add that i know her personally, and personally , she’s a delight to be around. easy to work with, lovely, sophisticated yet down to earth and caring. Hard to find…
I am so glad that Linda Gray has signed on to do the show. I stopped watching the original Dallas after Sue Ellen left. I would love for Larry to come back as JR but will certainly tune in to see Linda Gray back as Sue Ellen.
Hey a Dallas reboot has a lot of potential. They need Hagman and Duffy in the cast at least for the first season, or at least the first episode to get things going.
I mean they can have it about the kids and the Ewing empire, but unlike the original Dallas they don’t need the whole family of millionaires living in the same mansion. JR could live elsewhere and Bobby could claim SF, if they need to write JR off. Or if worst comes to worst start the show with JR’s funeral. He could always come back if they agree to terms. I mean remember the dream season.
I am sticking up for Warner Horizon, I mean Hagman has got to realize that this is not CBS its a cable network. TNT and Warner cannot pay him what he was getting in the old days. If he thinks he can stick up TNT like he did CBS back in the old days, I have news for him. The times have changed. Frankly, I would like to see how a Dallas would be without JR.
Hmmm…recast Sue Ellen? Well thats about as ridiculous as having a story line explaining that Sue Ellen and Pam decided to have so much plastic surgery and bio-identical hormone replacement that they now look like Miley Cyrus and Hillary Duff. To old? Any network that would want to recast Linda Gray for any part is moronic.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t J.R. commit suicide (or at least try to) in the last episode? Then again, this is the same show that brought Bobby back in the shower, so what does it matter, anyway?
larry hagman how could you not want to be in THE new dallas remake it wouldnt be a dallas remake with out ya i have watched dallas for years and years and who do i look for every time you larry hag man wheres that evil bad old jr that iloved please larry hagman for my sake and the sake of my dearly departed nana who also watched dallas for years and years please come back and make me happy and ill invite my nana to come to watch dallas all over again
