Focus Features has released a trailer for the Joe Wright-directed Hanna, with his Oscar-nominated Atonement discovery Saoirse Ronan playing the badass daughter of an ex-government operative who has turned her into a killing machine who’ll use all her skills to be reunited with her dad. Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett also star.

This is as close to a sequel to ‘The Professional’ as we’ll ever get. Looks fun.
Agreed. Haven’t seen the young actress before. Looks like a fun movie for Cate Blanchett (gets to pack a gun).
She was in a movie called ATONEMENT and another movie called THE LOVELY BONES. She was nominated for an Oscar. I would look her up sometime.
Its the young girl from The Lovely Bones…Oddly she seemed older in that film
Looks kind of amazing. can’t wait.
Father training daughter to infiltrate agency? Wasn’t this called Hit Girl earlier this year?
Don’t even start that. The script for this film was completed and optioned in 2006, 2 full years before Kick Ass was even published. And the premise is nothing like Kick Ass’ Hit Girl.
It looks like what Hit Girl should have been, if she weren’t over the top to the point of irritation.
chloe was great in hit girl.
but audiences aren’t into killer girls.
There was no movie called Hit Girl earlier this year, dummy
Sold. Ticket bought. Sign me up. I’m there.
Fail. Chloe Moretz would have been a much better choice in the role. She’s awesome.
Moretz played Hit-Girl amazingly. I’ll give her credit for that, but that role was based of off an over the top comic book. It required more spunk than actual acting. The more I see this trailer the more I’m convinced the casting director made the right choice. Ronan will rock this the way Moretz never could have.
what’s the name of the actress that Hanna chokes in the trailer?
This looks 50 kinds of awesome. Those shots with the giant animals are very creepy.
Is it just me or is Cate Blanchett’s character obviously going turn out to be Hanna’s mother as the “big twist”?
I guess I was spoiled because when this story was in the trades, it was open knowledge that Blanchett’s character was her mother. I guess the studio decided to late to keep that plot detail a secret from the public.
I’ve read the latest script and well…
You’re in for a surprise. *GASP*
This could really happen!!! Very plausible. In fact, my all-time favorite spy movies are, in no particular order:
THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (Pollack & Redford’s best? It just might be!)
THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD (Le Carre done right, courtesy of Ritt and Burton at their peaks)
And finally –
HANNA (the grittiest and most realistic spy caper EVER MADE!!!)
Looks like Hit Girl cash in. Hit Girl? Check. Father training? Check. Camp? Check.
I guess this kind of movie will break out into mainstream with Hunger Games. Until then, another geek cult favorite of the week.
Those are really superficial comparisons to the film Kick Ass.
I was reminded of the Fearless books and I’m not calling anything a ripoff.
Hannah was written in 2006. Two years before Kick-Ass the comic was published. So no, this is not a cash in.
This is absolutely not ‘Hit Girl’ and besides, this script was made six years ago. I’m excited, can’t wait!
but as a comic character hit girl has been around for years. –or am i mistaken?
No, Kick Ass wasn’t published until early 2008, 2 years after the Hanna script was written.
From someone who loves movies like this, I have to say I can’t wait to see this! I am pretty sure all of the movies I go see come from seeing them on this website.
This gal Hanna looks like she could beat the s**t out of Hit-Girl.
Anyways…this looks s f’ing awesome.
Wow, look what one can do with an original script! Are you writing this down, Hollywood?
Looks amazing. I’m going.
This will be great! I love the action and the awesome looks of HANNA. LOL. I like how she punch and everything.
Ugh!! Please don’t compare this to KICK-ASS; it was sooooooo terrible!
I read the script many months ago, though it has great attachments, the issue has always been a young girl being trained to kill. It did not set well with many buyers/ people…
I’m expecting some wonderful single-take action sequences with Ronan and Bana. You better deliver Mr. Wright.
But yea this looks incredible.
“Daughter of Salt.”
(Looks better than Salt, tho.)
Great, another movie about a child trained to kill.
God listen to you people moaning. It’s a damn movie. Looks hot. Loved Hit Girl too, she was the best thing about Kick-Ass.
PS: Children are trained to kill in the Sudan, Kenya, any number of African nations. Of course they’re black so nobody cares. Soon as it’s a fictional white girl it’s a problem.
First things first: “Hanna’s” Trailer had no fiery explosions! How am I supposed to enjoy this movie?
Next, the icky hard-to-justify ethics of training a young teenage girl to kill.
Problem solved: Hanna’s a hero with an Irish lilt fighting against evil doers. There. Now I feel better about the whole thing.
“Killer girls” scores big with a surprisingly large demographic. 18-34 males eat it up it, and 18-34 girls identify totally.
Bring in Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett to attract older demos, throw in CIA conspiracy hooey, add a gruesome killing every 10 minutes, and you’ve got a bankable movie.
Hanna’s Hero Journey is just a kid’s killing spree of fighting and slaying (literally) evil dragons until she returns home… chastened, bloodied, yet wiser.
Now, most kids don’t kill adults chasing them to learn valuable “life lessons”. But they’re not Hanna.
Moralists hate the very notion of “killer kids”, believing we should be more evolved. Some even go so far as to claim that the “Higher Power” might have some problem with adults teaching kids how to kill.
No matter.
History is on the side of “Hanna’s” producers and director.
Throughout history, parents taught their kids to kill enemies. Even as late as Medieval times, kids just like Hanna were routinely trained to kill their family’s enemies. Recently, Germans and Khmer Rouge trained their kids to hunt down and kill the enemies of the State. Today, many countries in the Middle and Far East train children to kill the enemies of their State and/or religion.
You can’t question this group’s righteous ethics, can you?
In fantasy, we, Americans, train kids to kill with glorious abandon! We’re masters at the fine art of teaching children how to kill all manner of baddies-real or imagined.
Not only that, but the folks who make and market these killing tutorials are given awards and live like millionaires. So this must be a good thing, right?
!3 yr old kids can go watch PG 13 movies that encourage all kinds of killing mayhem.
Video games right this minute are training millions of potential Hanna’s how to kill-and have fun while they’re at it.
And Hollywood, never late for the “killer kids” party, pumps out killer-kid celebrations like “The Professional”, “Alien”, “Hit Girl”, “Elektra”, and now “Hanna”.
From the looks of the Trailer, “Hanna’s” seems a winner.
Nice music to go with Hanna’s Hero killing spree and chase.
Cate sexing up her delivery.
Exotic atmosphere and sinister doings in remote well-appointed evil enclaves.
Then finally, we have wild, blond haired Hanna to appeal to the “inner pedophile” of every single male moviegoer and critic who likes “Hanna.
Oops, the elephant in the room.
Males interpret young girls killing male adults as sex acts, plain and simple. The psychological subtext for “Hanna” and similar movies is a young girl’s sexual awakening through killing. Guys love it!
Hanna’s too young for sex, but she sure isn’t too young to train to kill.
To those critics who review “Hanna” positively, and to those who plan to pay to see Hanna, the killer girl, in action:
Embrace YOUR inner pedophile!
Because there is no other justification on this good, green earth for liking a movie about a wild-haired, Irish-lilted, blond teenager who kills MEN except your subconscious sexual attraction to “killer girls”.
Want some fun?
As “Hanna’s” reviews flood Rotten Tomatoes, observe the male critics who like “Hanna” tap-dance around their REAL subconscious attraction to Hanna and her exploits.
Gene Kelly has nothing on them!
And neither does “Hanna”…”Lolita” with a gun.
I’m just glad to see two women carrying an action movie instead of the usual “white guy lost his wife/son/daughter and is now seeking revenge” storyline. I won’t go to the theater for this but it’s a definite rental for me.
I’d say YOU need to embrace your “inner pedophile”… and strangle it.
Lighten up Francis, it’s just a damn movie.
