Relativity Media has released a trailer for Take Me Home Tonight, a coming of age comedy shot in 2007 by Universal Pictures under the title Kids in America. It languished until it was acquired by Relativity and set for March 4 release. Written by That ’70s Show team of Jackie and Jeff Filgo, the Michael Dowse-directed film stars Topher Grace (also a producer), Anna Faris and Dan Fogler.

There’s a reason this was sitting at Universal for a couple of years. Now we all know why.
I saw this movie at a special screening recently and it is actually really great! It’s funny, the cast is awesome and I really enjoyed it! Not sure why it was delayed, but definitely worth checking out.
@ elliott
Its not because of the quality of the movie if thats what your thinking. Universal didn’t release this earlier because the film supposedly has some scenes involving drug use so I guess they couldn’t release it or something. Ive read several test screening reports on this film and they all said it was great. Trailer was good too and I will definitely see it.
sup topher? your career is on a roll!
so by your logic they bought a script involving drug scenes and then when they realized they were actually on film they couldnt just edit them out, they had to sit on the movie a couple of years? let it age like a bottle of opus one?
uh no….there is still drug use in the movie. It was delayed cuz it’s horrible. As bad as the trailer is, the movie is waaay worse.
Now get back to work, Uni intern.
“Its not because of the quality of the movie if thats what your thinking. Universal didn’t release this earlier because the film supposedly has some scenes involving drug use so I guess they couldn’t release it or something”
You gotta be kidding me.Do you acutally believe a studios let a film sit idle for three years because it has drug use in it?
Doesn’t seem the least bit derivative, cliched or predictable.
Even universal execs that worked on this movie say it is awful and consider the director supremely untalented.
Hank – Know what is weird? I worked on this movie. I was in the room when the pitch was bought and was the only Uni exec who went to set. I love this movie. It is a testament to the hard work from Topher, Sarah, Gordon, Dowse, The Filgo’s and the crew that the movie is going to be released. No movie is perfect and the reasons as to why Universal chose to not release it are not for public discussion, especially when everyone else here makes up lies disguised by fake names and fake email addresses. But you sir are either grossly misinformed or a liar because Michael Dowse is very talented and a great dude. Go watch Its All Gone Pete Tong and stop spreading vicious lies. Nothing personal but I take your comment as a direct insult and ask you to give more thought next time. Happy Holidays!
Judging from this trailer, it doesn’t look bad. It just looks painfully ordinary. Topher or the production values don’t exactly scream 1988. The Suncoast Video plug is amusing, but I don’t see much of a return on this one David. Happy Holidays!
“Doesn’t seem the least bit derivative, cliched or predictable.” Unlike this very original critique which you don’t see in the comments section of every single Deadline article. Well put, Anthony Fremont.
Unlike Take Me Home Tonight, my critique is not intended to entertain a mass audience so I didn’t spend years and millions of dollars on making it creative. Glad it touched a nerve in you, though, tvfan. Flattered to be quoted.
And here’s Topher Grace doing his “I’m Topher Grace and I play every role the same” schtick…
I liked him in Predators, that was a different side of him…
It work for Shia labouf,Michael Cera, that guy from Napoleon Dynamite.
I heard this is an entirely retooled version. Someone i work with saw it as well and came back raving about how funny it was. Also supposedly the soundtrack is an 80′s dream come true.
I saw this at a screening last week in NYC.
It was cute, but strictly a rental.
Topher doesn’t look like he’s in 1988. It’s a 2007 Topher Grace in 1988.
Yeah, hair metal and leg warmers are funny. Ha ha. We get it. Ha ha ha the 80s were funny. People wore funny clothes and listened to funny music.
We get it. Enough already.
Was better when it was called Can’t Hardly Wait
This looks like a sleeper hit IMHO. It will resonate with a lot of people from that generation who seldom go to the movies because of the kids…
The only issue is how much P&A they are going to spend to release it.
I’d rather see this in IMAX than Tron…
LOVE Jeff and Jackie!!!
I’d heard about this movie way back before they shelved it. Sounded good then, looks fun now.
I’ll definitely be there when it opens.
lmao @ “Straight Outta Compton”. Best part of the trailer
Oh God. It’s awful. I’ve seen it. Run far away.
This looks good!
It looks pretty good to me. I’ve always been surprised by Topher’s lack of for the lack of a better word, heat, while the far less talented Kutcher is all over the place
Looks funny, and surpringsly good despite the shelf life.
Will skew the Hot Tub Time Machine crowd. Good pick up Ryan Kavanaugh
Wonder what money Eddie Money will pull from this?
ive seen this filmed before … it was called superbad then
One part of me wants to be like, oh another 80′s nostalgia masterbatory movie made by Gen X executives. Another part of me says, I love Anna Faris but why is she always playing this suburbanite chick who says funny things. Then another part of me says maybe it has some funny parts in it that would be even funnier after visiting the local dispenser. Followed by another part of me that’s like stop being a hater Moonbow Snowrain.
@Hank – hi, I was the exec on this movie from when we bought it as a pitch from Topher + Gordon + Sarah + saw it all the way through. I was the only Uni exec who visited the set. You are completely misinformed or a liar. I have no personal beef with you but please get your information correct. I’m unable to comment as to why Universal chose to have Relativity release this film through the Rogue label but if you recall, Rogue was a part of Universal at the time that the movie was made. However, more importantly, the team that made this movie is extremely talented, including the director, whom I brought in to do a rewrite + direct.
It is a testament to the hard work of Topher, Gordon, Sarah + Michael that this movie is getting released thru Ryan recognizing its potential. It isn’t perfect as no movie is but please get your facts correct. Thanks. Happy holidays.
4 million opening weekend. and it will be lucky to hit 10 million total
