20th Century Fox has released a trailer for Water For Elephants, the Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the bestselling novel. Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Inglourious Basterds‘ Oscar winner Christoph Waltz star in a love triangle under the Big Top.

I’m loving the dark tone beneath the whimsy spectacle.
Reese here is a classic noir femme-fatale (something I never even knew she was capable of). The look in her eyes says she’s hiding something. And the Twilight kid looks…appropriate.
Can’t wait to put on the wig and robe to judge the outcome.
Been looking forward to this one for a while. Not sure how I feel about the film, though, considering my love for the book… I guess it looks pretty decent…
It’s pretty vague. Pretty, but vague. In a visceral level, Hal Holbrook might turn off the young people. Nobody really likes Reese Witherspoon, so it was good that they kept her inclusion to a minimal, basically to some side profiles that diminished her horse face, and only one whispering bit of dialogue. Robert Pattison looks good, but really that’s all he’s got. This is a total wait-and-see. Loved the book, but the trailer is a little too sentimental and forced style from the more gritty, depression-era, fast-paced novel that I read.
“Nobody really likes Reese Witherspoon”
According to what poll? I’m not a huge fan, but she seems to be pretty popular and is a good actress.
Beautiful trailer….really well done.
I don’t really like anybody in this film except for Waltz.
…and is Reese Witherspoon trying to dress up as Charlize Theron for Halloween or something? Looks like it.
Would be better without Robert Pattinson. It’s pretty bad when circus animals out stage the lead actor.
You mean upstage?
Once again, Robert Pattinson proves he cannot act other than with his nostrils and a melodramatic voice. No onscreen presence here. He’s a movie prop. I’ll wait for the reviews before I tolerate him because I’m curious about Waltz and the circus environment of the time.
This trailer looks great, I have been looking forward to this adaptTion for some time.all leads perfectly capture what I envisioned
Can’t wait for this one
I think Francis Lawrence is very talented, he hasn’t made a great film yet, but his movies always look amazing.
Constantine has some of the best special effects and cinematography for the comic genre, I am legend had some amazing shots in it.
I think he’s like Fincher in a lot of ways, but he’s also got his own style that I think could do something amazing if he has a good script.
Looks horrible, how bout try to stop putting a ‘whimsical’ soundtrack to make this movie any better than it is. Besides Waltz, who is decent, this movie looks like a straight-to-dvd. I hope Reese’s character lays on horses in the book because thats not any circus trick.
Loved the book. Loved the trailer. Love all the actors. Really looking forward to this movie!
Obviously beautifully shot. Other than that…the trailer doesn’t make me want to see the film. Felt miscasts and everyone was speaking reverentially as if the undertone was “we’re doing something really arty and important here!” Hate those kind of movies. Hope I’m wrong.
“The Most Beautiful Show on Earth”?? No, it’s the Most Cruel and Ridiculous Show on Earth. Elephants are BEATEN to perform these tricks for human entertainment – whether it’s in the circus or for a film. Yes, beaten. Check out the undercover videos of what elephants endure to be trained. It’s obscene.
Elephants are intelligent animals with complex social structures who travel 40 miles a day in the bush. They mourn their dead. They are not obligated to stand on their heads to amuse us.
PASS.
Where are these undercover videos? I don’t doubt that this kind of thing happens, but I do doubt it is prevalent, or as you suggest, the norm.
Unfortunately, it is the norm.

And, yes, I have heard firsthand from animal trainers that they need to use excessive force to get results.
Wild animals belong in the wild. Period.
Read the book, you idiot. The mistreatment of Rosie the elephant is a central theme.
While I can appreciate that is the theme of the book – elephants are still USED to perform in the film.
A book that purports to care about the mistreatment of elephants in the circus is directly leading to their continued abuse: Hypocritical.
I loved the script, but the look of this trailer is a disappointment.
Looks amazing !!
note that robert pattinson only says 3 words in this trailer. he’s so bland.
it would be nice to see reese get back in the game.
Seems promising, very ‘Big Fish meets Moulin Rouge’ and that’s definitely not a bad thing. Witherspoon needs a critical darling and Pattinson could really prove himself next year with this and Bel Ami : two baity roles in potentially good to great films. If he nails this and especially the adaptation of the great Maupassant-short story (Georges Duroy is a great role), he could reinvent himself and he NEEDS to do that as soon as possible because his Twilight-days are coming to an end soon….thank God.
I didn’t quite understand why everyone went so crazy over the book, but the trailer seems pretty faithful to it. And good lord, Reese Witherspoon needs to eat a steak.
Reese Witherspoon… okay, Christoph Waltz… alright I think I’ll watch it… Robert Pattinson?… PASS.
Looks great. After having seen the PBS series “Circus”, the backdrop seems really interesting!
Looks kind of magical. I read the book and didn’t have high hopes for the movie adaptation (when do they ever turn out well?) but this has impressed me. Looking forward to it.
4 words: Made For TV Movie
Loved this book and was worried Hollywood would mess it up when i heard the cast but i must say I’m pleasantly surprised. Patterson looks amazing ( and hot!) as Jacob and though i don’t care for Resse she looks great as Marlena. Now I’m excited for this to come out. Looks gorgeous!
Now THAT’S a trailer (note: it runs exactly 2 mins)! Intriguing w/out being too vague (a love triangle among glamorous circus folk in the ’30′s– check), but not giving anything away so I feel as though I don’t need to see the movie. The images are quite beautiful & I’d pay $ to watch Christopher Waltz read the phone book. Sitting on the toilet.
I LOVED this book! LOVED IT! Highly recommend it. IN fact I read it and wanted to read it again the minute I finished. Hope the movie does the book justice!
