According to the current estimated 2010 figures for IMAX box office to date, I’m told that grosses essentially doubled compared to 2009 with North American theatrical film grosses for 2010 about $544 million (compared to 2009 at $270 million).

I wonder how much of this is due to IMAX relaxing their requirements on what qualifies as an official IMAX screen? A true IMAX screen 20 years ago used to be something like four stories tall… now not so much.

I have been to theaters where they had LIEmax screens. It says IMAX, but my barometer for what IMAX should look like is the Lincoln Square IMAX in NYC. None of these supposed IMAX theaters are the same size.
But I have to say, they may not be as big, but the picture quality is excellent. The LIEmax theater at the City Center in White Plains NY is pretty big, clear, and comfortable.
Probably quite a bit. It’s easier to scrap some seats rather than construct a monstrous screen. And not only that, but most of the IMAX moneymakers are upconverted films anyway. There’s a great inforgraphic about it all that really puts it into perspective here:

If I’m not mistaken, that’s more than doubled isn’t it?
