There’s still no official word. But I’m hearing from 007 insiders that production should start on the next James Bond movie — “Bond 23″ — towards the end of next year for release November 2012. Makes sense since MGM’s future is now sorting itself out what with the pre-packaged bankruptcy getting approval, and Spyglass taking over studio filmmaking, and star Daniel Craig finishing his film commitments. The actor began work on the Hollywood remake of the Swedish original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as soon as he completed shooting Cowboys and Aliens in a nifty bit of schedule coordination between two studios and James Bond rights holders Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. Adding to the mix is that yet another James Bond videogame which had been held up because of the uncertainty recently got the go-ahead. Meanwhile, the latest 007 vidgame is for sale this Christmas.
It’s still not clear who will distribute the next bond. Deadline’s Mike Fleming reported last month that, if MGM isn’t a distributor, the next installment of James Bond will be “a jump ball”. Expect Sony (which distributed Casino Royale) to battle it out with Warner Bros and Fox, but Paramount could emerge in the thick of it because of its close relationship with Spyglass over the film reboot of Star Trek and sequel.
The British newspapers also indicate Bond 23 may now be casting. Today’s Daily Mail reports that 007 producer Barbara Broccoli has been to see actor Russell Beale twice in his current West End play Deathtrap. Also, the Shakespearean actor is starring as King Lear for Bond 23 director Sam Mendes in a National Theatre production in 2012. And he’s exec producing Shakespeare’s History Plays for a new BBC TV season that Mendes is also overseeing. Beale told UK newspaper The Independent earlier this year that he’d already dropped a hint to Mendes that “Every actor wants to be in Bond. I’d love to be a baddie.”
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

About time! I am so ready for a new Daniel Craig Bond film.
I would love to see British actor Hugh Laurie as Q …something that is missing with new Daniel Craig
series
2012 also marks the 50th anniversary of the film series, as DR. NO opened in 1962. Makes sense to get another film out there by then.
early last year, a top sony marketing exec told me fox would release the next bond movie. i really hope he’s wrong because fox is such an incompetent mess these days. paramount would be a great choice because they are so innovative and really have their act together
It is Simon Russell Beale – recently an excellent George Smiley on BBC Radio.
PS Congrats, Nikkie and Mike. You have the finest showbiz news site in cyberspace.
Thank God, Chris Nolan is not going to touch and ruin Bond.
Mendes rules. Finally, an Oscar winner directing a Bond film.
Yes, because everything Chris Nolan touches turns to crap.
Are you serious?
Beach Bond or Sandy Street?
Perhaps, where we meet, may
Alter the next financial fallout.
Megacities rising might, a
hint of oligarchy, a dash for the dark pools, buying and selling futures:
—AND no more lines left…—but bond shall specially return rightly— Best 2 Bond 23.
Just as long as it’s not in 3D….
A good Bond movie is money in the bank, and Daniel Craig isn’t going to wait around forever, get it done guys!!
The last Bond film was one of the worst. Terrible direction and fight scenes that tried way too hard to copy Bourne. That said, I still enjoyed it and Craig was still very good. I can’t wait to see what they do with the next one and I hope Craig sticks around for 24 as well.
Yeah, because the Bourne movies didn’t “copy” anything from Bond. Go re-watch Green Zone again, and let the grown-ups chat, k?
It will take a Mendes to restore faith in the franchise after the mess that was QUANTUM and this period of paralysis. CASINO was stunningly good against all my expectations; QoS was like spending two hours in a washing machine with blood, shrapnel and bits of cars. Time for a reset, with better script and star director. Wish they would line Tarantino up for one too.
Is Mendes still on? I’m a bit iffy after they’ve tried to get drama directors in the past to do Bond films with…shall we say mixed results? Mark Forster did the dull QOS and Michael Apted did one of the less memorable Brosnan ones. Mind you Mendes is far above them…but I thought his last three movies were disappointing (especially the contrived Revolutionary Road). And it was an old-fashioned action director who turned Casino Royale into one of the best Bond movies ever.
If it doesn’t work, they can just take NOlan up on his offer to revamp Bond the same way he revamped Batman for the better.
Please get your head out of your ass on this point. Tarantino can’t do Bond or any other franchise for that matter if it didn’t come out of his own head. He’s too stuck in his wordsmith hong kong-spaghetti western reverential habits. If you want Bond to engage in 20 minute soliloquies about the value of an Aston Martin over a Walther PPK then do a fan fiction short story or something because he’s not getting the gig. Nolan would be the next logical choice after Mendes because 1) He’s a better visual director than Tarantino by leaps and bounds(sorry folks but its true). 2)He’s a storyteller that gets himself out of the way. Meaning: the story takes precendence over personal fetishes.
Tarantino would be a terrible choice for Bond. You might as well sign Mel Brooks.
i disagree. he would take bond back to the goldfinger days. i hate the daniel craig movies. they’re for bourne fans not for bond/ian flemming fans. every bond fan i know hates the last film..
Looking forward to another Craig Bond – while Solace tried too hard to be Bourne, it certianly wasn’t terrible, and hopefully the long gap will have rejuvinated them to get back to what makes Bond Bond. Casino Royale was fantastic. Anyway, presuming that Sony wants to do The Girl Who Played With Fire and Kicked the Hornet’s Nest after Dragon Tattoo is a success, where would those fit around his Bond commitments?
Mendes may be an Oscar winner, but he not righr for Bond. He’s so self-regarding as a filmmaker that he treats all his ideas with such smug reverence, that his films are turgid. I really can’t see him doing a dynamic action sequence with heat and suspense. Casino was a pleasure because of its wit and cleverness, which it wore lightly. Mendes may be bright but he’s very heavy-handed.
I would be thrilled if Simon Russell Beale landed a role in the next Bond. I saw him as Iago in “Othello” and as “Hamlet” on stage and he was amazing.
On the fun side, Tarantino might be well suited for a bad guy in a bond film.
Love Simon Russell Beale–but sitting through Deathtrap last week was punishment.
I am very happy to learn that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson will soon be producing Bond 23. After thirty-two years, since first visiting their father’s offices in Mayfair, I still hold them in the greatest esteem and with the greatest affection. Good luck, Barbara and Michael…wishing you the greatest success ever…Ronald Payne
Get Sean Connery to play the villain in Bond 23. How cool would that be? On top of that, it would push this movie over the top and almost guarentee huge box office.
Connery has stated in previous interviews he’d be interested in such a role… for real!
Let him end his career on a high note, rather then that crap, “League of Extraordinary Gentleman.”
My Bond friends, you all have it wrong. Forget Bond 23 It’s time for a modern remake of Goldfinger!
i cannot wait to see another BOND movie.
I can’t wait for Bond 23. Forget Nolan. I want him thinking about Batman. Mendes? We’ll see. What I’d like to see is Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell direct “23″. It would be guaranteed a winner. And as far as Bourne – the fight scenes in the first were incredible. But after that they got the camera in too close…like in QOS. Back off…you’re going to give somebody a seizure…
