Fox is not officially confirming yet but it is as final as it gets: The Good Guys won’t be returning for a second season. Fox originally picked up Matt Nix’s cop dramedy straight-to-series for a summer run. In May, before the show had premiered, the network ordered additional episodes and put it on the fall schedule to air on Fridays. But, despite getting a preview run behind American Idol, the series starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks never gained traction and performed underwhelmingly for its entire 20-episode run.

I watched every week because Bradley Whitford is great and he was very entertaining on this but the tone of the show was so off putting that I never really got into it. Let’s hope he’s back soon with something that catches on.
The Good Guys is a great series – Whitford and Hanks both have excellent timing. I hope USA or TNT or someone picks this up. The list of recent series that were positively brilliant, but couldn’t make it through a single season is truly depressing: Dragnet, Trial By Jury, Raines, New Amsterdam, just to name a few. But God awful reality shows come back year after year, and totally humorless comedies – like The Office, How I Met Your Mother and King of Queens – are major successes. Thank God for laugh tracks so there’s some indication where the “funny lines” are.
Laugh tracks on The Office? Have you ever watched it?
I so agree. My family looked forward to this show every Friday night, it was the best new show in so long. My kids are going to be so sad. If it had been on another night, not Friday when in early fall when there was high school football and other things going on, maybe it would have had a better chance. I LOVE THIS SHOW and want it back.
My husband and I love watching the Good Guys. It’s smart and funny.
Please don’t take it off the air. So nice to have a show that you can enjoy!!!!

I find it so interesting that the news clip on the cancellation of this terrific show was posted in December 2010 and it is still getting comments five months later. Clearly this was a great, well liked show that just didn’t get enough exposure. If it had, we would have known that it would not be coming back sooner, or rather, we would be looking forward to enjoying season 2 in the coming months.
Colin, Wilford you guys rocked this show! Great work, you deserve more!
Wow! I was just checking back to Fox on the return date for the Good Guys and I guess there isn’t one. I’m blown away and its June. I never gave it a second thought that it wasn’t returning. I watched that like clockwork. I was one of those “mere 3.4 million” viewers. Really? Is that considered bad? What do you need to keep your show?- 100 million and people who make your life look worse than your own (aka reality)? What happened to the idea of tuning in to the daydreamy world of television? Wasn’t there this great notion that we could get away from our own day to day and just laugh or cry? I’m used to ABC letting me down (we all are…) but FOX used to get it. Sorry to hear this guys…best laugh-till-I-cried in a long time. Thanks to the cast and writers for making it was it was! It will be terribly missed.
They used to start a show, and if it didn’t get good ratings at first they’d still give it a second season to see if they could get people to come back or give it time for other people to hear about it. A lot of classics started out slow and ended up with a good following only after the first season. Heck, I didn’t start watching Seinfeld until the middle season 2, and I didn’t start watching it regularly until season 3. I tried to get others to watch this show, but by the time they started looking for it to watch it, it had already been announced it was being canceled. It is on Netflix now so hopefully a lot of people will see it and start watching it and talking about it again. Who knows, maybe someone will grow a few brain cells at Fox and bring the show back. I was just looking around to see if anything new was reported on the show, and was surprised to see people are still talking about it!
Yeah, The Good Guys was a good show, and I guess that is why Fox isn’t one of the top networks, they don’t know what they are looking for. Fox network sucks for getting rid of that showe-
Amen to that. The reason why is that non-scripted “reality” shows are cheap to produce, require no talented writers or actors, and appeal to (at least that’s what they tell us, hummm) enough of the herd to keep the advertisers happy.
Maybe if we stopped buying the stuff the “reality” show ads are pushing. But that would require actually watching them to find out who’s sponsoring the shows. That’s a switch – record the show and fast forward to get to the commercials. That’s how bad it has come to.
I really hate when a great show like Good guys gets canceled after one season. It took three seasons for many great shows to find and audience .I really loved Bradley whitfords character .
The Good Guys cancelled? Something smells “crimey” about that move.
You’re a true fan.
BRING the show back…. it was a very good show… I dont like many tv shows but this one was hillarious
I can’t believe everyone is still talking about this show! I’m watching in on NetFlix. Someone’s gotta bring it back!
Every time they come up with a good show it seems that they go and cancel it. I watched every one of these and it was laugh out loud funny. I looked forward to it every week and was a great destressor!
Why in the world would they cancel such an exciting “Dukes of Hazzard” type of show. I loved seeing Colin Hanks every week and his side kick was out-of-this-world!! Please let me know where this comedy is being moved so I can continue watching it. PS: I could care less about American Idol! I live for comedy shows and this was one of the greats!!
I’m so disappointed Fox cancelled this show!! I loved the characters, and the flashback scenes. A very original show and one of the best comedies on TV. I hope some other network has better sense than Fox & picks this show up!!
Pretty interesting that so many people (like myself) had no clue this show was cancelled. So disappointing when original shows get axed and the same old same old keep coming back. It was so funny and I can’t even find it to buy it. Hope they don’t cancel Human Target next. Or Chaos.
im glad to see all these comments about this brilliant show. People are so used to instant gratification and shock value shows that something like the good guys isnt appreciated for its great acting and tongue in cheek humor.
Human Target is gone too. This is a sad day for Americans everywhere. I too have been checking listings for when it’d be on, but was left with disappointment. I’m going to have to buy both shows so I can watch them over again just to remind me of when TV was good. At least I still have The League.
BRING BACK FIREFLY!
The whole season is on netflix in HD.
My wife and I both love this show. I was just now looking for it in the Fall line-up and found out it was cancelled. That is a crime. I rarely watch network TV anymore because the good shows like Leverage, the Closer, White Collar, Burn Notice, the Glades and Covert Affairs are all on cable. TNT, TBS, USA, A&E somebody please pick up this show. You won’t regret it.
I couldn’t agree more. This show was genuinely clever in a way I haven’t really seen since House first came on, or maybe Big Bang Theory. It was superbly cast and very well acted. It was funny without being derivative, and it was a refreshing break from the eight billion procedural dramas already on TV, which with the exception of Castle take themselves super-seriously. I hope this series finds new life somewhere.
This just pisses me off that these stupid reality TV shows get so much watchers, yet good shows like The Good Guys get no love from the people that air the shows. So much stupid, retarded ass people watching “Desperate Housewives” and what-not, and REAL shows aren’t getting watched enough. Put it back on air!
This is a great show. Why cancel it? I have been looking forward to this especial when all the other shows are coming to an end for the summer. I think this is really funny and I hope someone will pick it up and keep going with it.
This show had IT, and I don’t get this clueless executives. This show was different and funny so it was either on the wrong network or the wrong time. I do hope it re-appears on cable.
Great post. If it were on Facebook, I’d “Like” it.
I think Fox wants to go bankrupt. They cancelled at least six shows that my wife and I watched with much enjoyment. Can I get a job with Fox as Programming Director. I can pick the winners and they obviously cannot. What a “Loser Network”.
I cant believe it! Never gave it a second thought that “good guys” wasn’t coming back for another season. VERY DISAPOINTING!!!
I’ve got to agree…everytime FOX comes up with great shows that they apparently “commit” to a season and dump.
I hate that…
I agree. I still can’t believe the show is not returning for a second season. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. One of a few great shows that have been on tv in the past several years.
I loved the show-It cracked me up!!!
just watched all twenty on netflix and I regret not a single minute. Lord if you love me and i’m fairly certain you do, you’ll give me a second season of this show
This doesn’t bode well for Fringe.
Someone should be fired. Both of these actors are great, but no is turning in on FOX especially, to watch two non-studs.
Nip/Tuck was a greats show. But it was helped by McMahon being a handsome dude. And McMahon has charisma, and a big body. It’s not like his face/hair is the greatest in the world, but FOX (and everyone) needs shows with good-looking leads.
It’s a shallow business. If talent and non-model faces drew ratings, I’d be a prime-time actor.
Everyone on the “Big Bang Theory” is ugly except for the blonde chick, what the hell is your point?
I tune in to watch Kaley Cuoco. The most talented and funny woman on TV.
kaley cuoco aint even pretty. people just see a blonde with tits and shes automatically deemed hot. HELL NAH
Wanted to like it… but didn’t.
It was definitely hit and miss, but a couple episodes were hilarious. Whitford was fantastic.
I feel sorry for poor Matt Nix! I could tell he wanted “The Good Guys” to kick-off; but FOX Studios took it literal.
The Scuttle-butt that’s out says that he might take a job with Dick Wolf to move “Law & Order: CI” down to Miami. “Law & Order: Miami” or “Burn Notice: Law & Order” in this case!
I didn’t really like “The Good Guys” though… it had no pick-up about itself.
Bradley Whitford was a joy, but the 3 minutes ago, 30 minutes ago, 3 hours ago flashback formula made the show a pain to watch.
Aha! That was it. The unique and well thought out flash back motif was too difficult for the average “I believe reality TV is real” viewer to follow.
How depressing that to appeal to the masses you need to dumb things down….
It was the combined work of fools.
Best comment today.
I really loved the start of this show. But have to believe that the “development” by Mikkel “the coach” Bondesen or lack of development killed this show. Bondesen too busy coaching people with all his wacky thoughts. Hey Matt why are you paying him still. Schwartz is already gone and soon Vanderbilt will be too.
I thought it was hilarious and fun to watch. Not sure why garbage like Survivor gets ratings while funny shows like this get canceled.
It’s not only ratings… garbage like survivor is a fraction of the cost to produce vs a slick series like the good guys. Professional actors, writers, directors + lots of explosions needs to create bigger ratings than a cheapo reality series.
Maybe I’m one of the few, but I really liked this show, I watched it every week without fail, and there are only one or two shows that I watch on a regular basis, I’m really gonna miss this one.
Great show. Hot ladies and comedy plus. The flashbacks made it great and the music was solid. The wheels they drove was fantastic. Long live ROCK!!
Agreed! I thought this show was great and have been a fan of both leading actors for a long time. I love Whitford on The West Wing and Hanks all the way back to Orange County.
I absolutely loved it. It was great watching it poke fun at all the old cop show stereotypes. And Whitford is a joy to watch.
I wouldn’t watch kaley cuoco for money. Ruined charmed!
I tuned into the show thinking it was a cop show. I saw ads with action and stunts and heavy duty car chases. Then I watch it and find out it’s a comedy. A damn funny comedy. I kept watching and it became funnier and funnier. But every time I saw a commercial or an ad for it and even previews for upcoming episodes, it still played up the cop show aspect. They made a fatal mistake because there was a huge audience out there that never discovered the show because no one knew what kind of show was there. It’s a damn shame, The Good Guys was one of the clever, enjoyable and freshest shows out there. Whitford and Hanks were brilliant. And there were so many great guest stars. I’ll miss it.
I agree! I only starting watching this b/c it was free on itunes. When I saw the previews on Fox I thought it was another CSI rip-off. It was never positioned as a comedy. Whoever FOX’s cutter is for the ads/previews for the show should be fired. They made it look like a serious cop drama and totally missed the oddball, hilarious moments and quirky personalities.
This is the saddest news ever. I hope someone else picks up the show.
Ditto….I don’t think it was promoted the way it should have been. I would watch the repeats it they showed them. I made sure the DVR was set every Friday night. At least change the day of the week….or something to give it another chance. There is so much “crap” shows on TV. There is no quality comedy shows on anymore…Just stupid reality shows. Who gives a “RA” about Snookie or the un-talented wantabe’s they fill our airtime with.
Hey Fox…get human, and try to listen to some “Foghat” for God’s sake.
Me and my husband are so PO’d. That was the one show we looked forward to each Friday. The DVR was SET. They definately missed the boat on promoting this show. At least give it another day and give it another chance. No good quality comedy anymore. Too much Reality Show Crap…Who gives an “RA” about Snookie or the other non-talented wanna-be’s on TV. Hey Fox…for God Sake…Listen to some “Foghat” once in awhile. Give us back “the stach”
Ditto. Just another sad case of you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. I don’t LOL very often at TV but Good Guys would do it for me. Who ever gives Whitford and Hanks a regular gig with the right promotion gets the goose with the golden egg. Likable to loveable stills sells and this show was that, but networks keep opting out for annoying, depressing and downright boaring. It’s turned into one long depression/ed medication commercial. I kept checking FOX to see if it came back after the first of the year like they said it would, guess I can stop checking, since they lied.
Ditto, I just got online to see when the new season was coming only to find out they’ve cancelled the funniest new show around. So much for my favorite new show.
You saw ads? The only reason I ever found the show was because of Hulu, and the pilot episode had been removed. They re-posted the pilot one day and I went back and watched it. While the pilot was kind of funny and episode was two had some good moments, the later episodes were much much better and more hilarious. I recall only seeing one advertisement for it on TV, and it DID come across as just another one of those cop shows, not the show it actually was….had it been advertised as something fun and hilarious to watch, I know of several people who would have tuned into watch it, and would have liked the show.
I am so bummed. I love that show. It’s sad that Fox has run all of these animated shows and they keep going but some real good comedy show gets the shaft. What are you thinking,FOX?
these tv producers don’t have the guts to stay with a show and let it develope a following.
I loved this show. Came across it by accident and was hooked. The mustache is hypnotizing. Very disappointed in Fox, again. Get away from the Nielson Rating and ask the people that are actually watching TV.
Sticking 100 monkeys in a room and forcing them to watch TV programs and then extrapolating the results by measuring how many monkeys don’t sh*t themselves would yield far better results than Nielson Ratings.
THIS is the best comment today…and can be applied to all television, IMHO. Thank you. It made me guffaw…just like the show!!
This show was well thought-out and extremely FUNNY! Fox wastes its time with the stupid animated comedies, cheaper than hiring real actors and sets, I reckon. And don’t get me started on all the “reality shows” and how cheap & insipid they are! This show had heart and was a more true portrayal of the Dallas area & its citizens than JR Ewing & Co! Perhaps you had to be a “Boomer” to enjoy this show but, honestly, who else would be home on a Friday night at 9PM? It was interesting, hilarious and I think Colin Hanks has a great career ahead of him. Fox, you lost a fan.
I’m 63 and I love this program. How ridiculous to remove it. It was the only show on Friday nights worth watching. What kind of return could be expected from a show most people never heard of because they were not home on Friday nights. Come on. Bring back some fun. Bring back the show.
I too loved the show and I’m 54. My son is 13 and he loved it too.
I don’t watch much tv, because most of it is boring and not fun. I want to, just want to have some fun time. This show did that!
I strenuously object! This is a great show. I love it. It’s the only funny show that’s not completely stupid on TV. FOX, you need to rethink your d4ecision. Change your ad viewpoint if you must. But put it back ON!
The best show of the 2010 season!!!!!
Keep it Fox.
I love this show! Bradley Whitford was great (as always) and hilarious! The mustache worked wonders. My brother and I would always grill and watch this show. We call it “Good Guys Night.” Now it is no more. Goodbye friend and godspeed.
“Only cops and porn stars have mustaches like that.”
We called it “Good Guys night” also. My wife and I and 3 our teenage sons watched this show religiously. As a matter of fact when we found it on netflix we had a marathon and watched the whole series one Sunday. We still watch it on netflix all the time and there are only 20 episodes. Fox, you really f—-d up this time.
Yet another wonderful show killed off by the STUPIDITY of the networks. Every new show I really enjoyed this Fall is now gone…never given a fair chance. The Good Guys was terrific!
Was a great show, I thought the flashbacks were great and for us there were some laugh out loud moments which for us is rare on tv these days…I am gonna miss this show!
Liz was the most degrading and stupid female character ever put on tv, she alone is good reason for the series to be cancelled. I hope the ugly bimbo in the stupid wig that plays her never gets work again.
Carrol O’conner as Archei Bunker played what? The most degrading and stupid male character ever put on tv. He made this show a classic comedy. Lets face it,even reality tv is only good when the … is revealed.
The most disappointing cancellation since Firefly, I’ll miss this show.
this must be a VERY BAD DREAM! I cant believe FOX cancelled the best show to come to television in what…almost 15 years. Whitford and Hanks were born to act together in THIS show, and their timing was perfect. I too, made sure my DVR was set so I wouldnt miss an episode. Im a trucker and looked forward to getting home and watching these episodes even more than I looked forward to watching SCRUBS. FINALLY, a great cop show comes along, with 2, Genuinely GOOD GUYS, and it’s cancelled. Shows like CSI and Law and Order, are SOOOO over done! And now, even NCIS is too. Whats next, CSI: Perhump, N.M. ? Or, NCIS: Coosawachie? FOX…You screwed up with this show. It could’ve easily been the BEST SHOW ON TV, if you had put it in a better time slot and advertised it more. Use some ads on the “Computer thingy” or make tv commercials using DANisms. Man Im gonna miss this show. People that didnt like this show…have NO SENSE OF HUMOR. This was truly, a work of genius! DAN, JACK, JULIUS, LIZ…Im gonna miss you man!
Love the show! Sorry to hear that it’s over…
I loved this show! It was my favorite new show in 2010. The fact that Fox canceled it just goes to show that the people working there have no forethought. I still haven’t forgiven Fox for canceling “Arrested Development” and now with its decision to cancel Good Guys I don’t know if there’s anything I’ll watch on Fox. I hope that another network (USA? TNT?) decides to pick it up.
I loved thisshow, it was funny & enertaining. SORRY TO SEE IT GO!
