It looks like we’re in for another round of drawn-out Mad Men negotiations between AMC and Lionsgate TV and between Lionsgate and series creator/showrunner Matthew Weiner. And while talks on both fronts are underway, another deadline is looming – the options on the cast expire at the end of the month. That certainly complicates things as the producing studio may have to make a decision on the cast before the show’s future is certain. But if you can’t imagine Mad Men without Jon Hamm or Elisabeth Moss or January Jones or John Slattery, you don’t have to. While it appears that there may not be a deal for the show’s renewal by the end of the month, I hear Lionsgate fully intends to exercise the actors’ options before the Dec. 31 deadline. That is a good sign that the studio anticipates that Mad Men will be back for a fifth season. Negotiations on Weiner’s previous deal with Lionsgate two years ago dragged well into January and closed days after Mad Men triumphed at the Golden Globes for a third consecutive year as best drama series. This week, the period drama landed 3 Golden Globe nominations: for best drama series, best actor Hamm and best actress Moss, as well as 3 SAG Award nominations: for best drama series cast, best drama actor, Hamm and best drama actress, Moss.

I am happy for the success of this show and of Boardwalk Empire.
AMC should pay Matt as they wouldn’t have all their success in one hour without him.
Boardwalk, Breaking Bad, True Blood, Dexter, Damages are all cutting edge story telling.
Is there a bigger villain in the showrunner world right now than Matt?
I wonder if Weiner’s ego has been bruised by the success of TWD. It dwarfs MM now.
sorry but this is a no-brainer and they would be absolute fools not to give them what they want — this show wins everything in site.
Smokin drinkin and horin
I can’t get enough of this show
John Hamm is mine w the scotch.
Matt is a nightmare to work for. He berates his writers viciously.
He clearly has some emotional problems to work through.
He is an egomaniac who desperately needs good therapy and proper medication.
That said it is an awesome show. It has stayed powerful and changed the face of that network.
Matt definitely deserves a raise. And so do his writers to pay for the therapy they need after working for him.
Dwarfs it in shittiness.
“It dwarfs MM now.”
That’s just delusional, as big a d-bag as Weiner is.
So I hear the actor who plays Harry still works as a bartender. That’s just sad.
A lower rated cable show that alot of people do not watch. Mad Men is so overrated. The only drama out there that is worth time watching is Grey’s Anatomy.
Maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m the only one who thinks MM is boring. What are its ratings again?
No, you are not alone. It is boring. You would have to be as drunk as the characters to think it is even slightly entertaining.
Great show, low ratings, pretentious, insufferable showrunner (who will
NEVER succeed in features or broadcast), and maybe the coolest, most iconic TV cast of the last 20 years. I love Mad Men but the notion of Matt cashing a $15 million check is a little scary.
Even the WGA seemed to almost make a point of not nominating him this year in the individual teleplay category.
Go at it haters! Weiner is indomitable and beloved by cast crew and even writers he fired. Mad men is in over a hundred countries and the jewel in rainbow media’s (soon to be spun off into its own stock) crown. Lionsgate admits to 200 million in dvds and itunes. Weiner will get his due or walk away laughing. Its a billion dollar franchise and he’s a creative original.
Now, let’s talk about his funny name and baldness. I sure think that show sucks!!!
Why oh why does Weiner have to drain all of the fun, the anticipation of this great show with dramatics. He obviously loves the show, but if he stiffs his loyal cast and viewers who are MAD about his show, he’ll lose a lot of credibility and be seen as a spoiled by success greedy sycophant, which Hollywood has enough of.
I know nothing about Matt Weiner beyond the audio commentaries, but it’s obvious he works harder than the vast majority of show runners. He carefully rewrites episodes, it seems, to ensure a consistency of quality. It’s an amazing show and we’re lucky he’s willing to work so hard to keep it that way, instead of allowing it to decline, as many show runners do by stepping away and letting lesser writers/producers run things.
The one complaint I have is that Betty has become a caricature over the last 2 seasons and has been tremendously unsatisfying as a character because we don’t see the pain behind her anger and cruelty the way we do Don’s. It’s a cheap way to create a villain.
