EXCLUSIVE: Guess who is coming back to series television? Mandy Patinkin, who made headlines in 2007 with his abrupt departure from the CBS drama Criminal Minds, is set to co-star opposite Claire Danes in the Showtime drama pilot Homeland. That marks his first major series gig since Criminal Minds and a return to Showtime where he co-starred on the Bryan Fuller dramedy Dead Like Me for the show’s two-season run.
Homeland, from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, centers on American POW Scott Brody, who returns home 10 years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Anderson (Danes), a driven CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America. Patinkin will play the smart and politically savvy CIA Division Chief emeritus Saul Berenson who is Carrie’s main champion in the intelligence upper echelon and her sounding board. Production on the pilot begins on Jan. 10 in Charlotte, N.C. Patinkin, a Tony Award-winning stage actor who has appeared in such movies as Yentl, Dick Tracy and The Princess Bride, won an Emmy in 1995 for his role on the CBS medical drama Chicago Hope, which he left in its second season. His only appearance since leaving Criminal Minds was in an episode of CBS’ medical drama Three Rivers last season.

Interesting…awesome actor, but I wonder why Showtime would take him back after he quit Dead Like Me?
Ah well, I suppose talent speaks louder than attitude in this case. After all, he IS an incredible actor.
This will be a win for Showtime. Hopefully he stays on the show long enough, lol!
I may be wrong, but I don’t think he quit Dead Like Me. He completed the two seasons of the show. He did not return for the movie because he was busy working on Criminal Minds.
Because he didn’t quit. They cancelled the show
In all fairness he also had cancer at the time…
Isn’t this a Fox show? Aren’t premium cable channels supposed to give you what you can’t get on the nets rather than slavishly copy them?
Even though the whole thing is like “The Manchurian Candidate” this show could be cool, it feels just like 24
Great to see Patinkin back on the tv front. His episode on Three Rivers last year was captivating – and it deserved an emmy. Such a brilliant performer. Can’t wait to see him opposite Danes.
i agree i still have it on my dvr to watch
I don’t understand hwy anyone would hire him for a television show.. he normally only stays two years (his first stint on Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me & Criminal Minds were all two years)… unless they only want him for the beginning and are planning his exit strategy as they start up.
Not to say he isn’t a GREAT actor (because he is), he just doesn’t seem to have the appetite to sit through a show’s entire run.
From the sounds of it, he won’t be a major character in the same sense as Danes. We could go several eps without seeing him or just a scenic or two. Plus it is Showtime which means only about a dozen eps and all filmed way before they air. So it is possible that they could shoot his stuff all at once or in a handful of batches and it won’t interfere with his true love which is the stage

Considering his track record, I’d say this is probably the most prudent way to cast him for any tv show.
Doesn’t this guy have a reputation as an absolute nightmare to work with? Any stories?
So… does that mean Homeland won’t feature violence or maybe Patinkin doesn’t like government LOL.
I suppose it’s too much to hope he’ll sing, huh?
Seriously, his “Chicago Hope” performance was one of the great showboat performances of all time, akin to Laurie on “House” and Chiklis on “The Shield.”
Mandy and Claire together in a scene is going to be dynamite. Two amazing, truly stellar actors. Hopefully the writing and direction serves them well.
interesting pick of talent. and hope Mandy given his history of quiting shows stays with this one for its entire run. a long run.
Seriously, why do people invest in him? He quits every show.
I would hire him, just to kill him off !!!
He might be a good actor but he isn’t dependable.
Well, finally a show to watch with one of the finest actors out there. Short stints or not, he is a top-notch actor. His characters are so high engery in the first place that perhaps he can only go so far with them. I fully understand his departure from Criminal Minds because the depravity of that show really can wear you down. It is frightening to think these criminals really exist in our society and it can be overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, it was one of my favorite shows, until “Gideon” left. Welcome back Mandy. Hope this character is long lived so you are around a while. I really did miss you after Criminal Minds!
