EXCLUSIVE: Departing Office star Steve Carell is staying in the NBC comedy business as a writer. The Peacock has bought a half-hour, single-camera project from the actor-comedian based on his early days working as a mail carrier in Littleton, Massachusetts. Carell — who is leaving The Office in May after seven years — will write the comedy, tentatively titled The Post-Graduate Project. It is described as a sweet and nostalgic take on the period of Carell’s early life as a mail carrier and centers on a small-town post office frequented by a quirky but tight-knit group of local twentysomethings. Carell has referred to his experience as a mailman in interviews, saying that he quit after a few months because his boss told him he was not very efficient. Carell will executive produce The Post-Graduate Project with Thom Hinkle (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart). Carell’s Carousel Television will produce with Universal Media Studios where it is in the midst of a three-year overall deal. Carousel TV is also behind NBC’s reboot of The Rockford Files with House creator David Shore, which is back in the works. WME-repped Carell, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Michael Scott on The Office, co-wrote with Judd Apatow the 2005 hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which earned them a WGA nomination. His TV writing credits include The Dana Carvey Show and 2 episodes of The Office. Michael Ausiello is contributing to Deadline.com and Movieline.com as he preps for the launch of a new TV-centric website.

I would watch. I wish he would star in it!!! he hasn’t been in a hit movie since the 40 year old virgin. You would think he would get on another TV show.
If he is going to write for another show, He just stay on the office it wont last with out him. Steve is a mega talent and taking that talent away there’s really sad. the writers seem to be lost when it comes to the rest of the cast, let’s see more Jim and Pam, Andy and Erin not Gabe and Erin, bring back Wallace he can be funny.
They should just cancel the show already, it’s not funny anymore. I stopped watching the beginning of the season because there is no more actual story to the show.
Any other shows you don’t like that you want cancelled? I have an idea…why don’t you call all the networks and suggest that they cancel all of the shows that you personally don’t like? At the end of the day, it’s all about what you like and nobody else.
I will definitely be watching this. I adore Steve Carrel, and while the Office has and always will be my first obsessive love, I’m ready to move on too. This show sounds awesome.
They should call it the Michael Scott Workplace Comedy Television Show.
The Office has gotten tired (or rather, has been tired) as of late, and I don’t really care about it anymore. While I somewhat loathe the character of Michael Scott, I love Steve Carell. This sounds like it could be pretty awesome. If it replaced The Office, that would be even better!
No hit? You may not have liked it but Get Smart was a big hit. And Date Night did well too.
Actually, Get Smart was a pretty big hit. 140 million, domestic. 100 mil foreign. And it was friggin’ funny.
Hot damn! The Civil Service test in Shaky Cam.
I Love Steve, but not grooving on this idea. Sounds lame. Ask yourself this, if someone not super-famous pitched this to NBC (or another net) would they have bought it?
Trey, you sound lame. What makes a show good is the characters and the execution. I’m sure a show about a bunch of people working at a paper company sounds lame, too. You’re so quick to judge based on nothing. You must be a TV executive.
When I read Trey’s post I thought he sounded just like a TV exec too. They don’t want good characters. They want a hook. Something that grabs their attention but won’t hold it for 100 episodes. Everytime I pitch I’m amazed at how shotsighted TV execs are.
Yeah, Carell “co-wrote” The 40 Year-Old Virgin…
It sounds like “The Office” meets “Friends.” One question though: Do the group of twenty-somethings work at the post office? Or just frequent it? Why would they spend time at a post-office if they don’t work there? Is that an error in the press release?
Anyway I promise to watch this show if Steve Carell titles it:
“The Post Office”
We all know that the title will be some painful pun. For instance: Handle with Care (lead character’s last name is Handle.” “Zip’s Code” (lead character named Zip and he has a code he lives by). “Postage Stamp” (you guessed it, the lead character’s name is Stamp.) I just got sick writing these. Ugh.
The office isnt a big ratings draw as it is..does NBC really think its gonna last with out him??
Um, The Office is a huge ratings hit. It’s consistently in the top 15 of all shows each week, and top 10 for scripted (Non-Football, Non-Reality) shows. And, even if it just had average ratings, because NBC’s schedule is so horrible, “average” is still be heads and shoulders above any other scripted show on the network, so no way it gets cancelled. Its ratings might drop a lot once Carell is gone, but I’m not sure about that. Even with him there, the quality of the show has dropped a lot the past few seasons, but its ratings have stayed high.
The Post Office – brilliant!
I bet he has stories to tell lol This will be something i will definately have to watch.
Doug, it’s true that the key to a successful show is the characters and execution– but every pitch/script claims to have superior characters and execution. At some point you have to evaluate the premise/hook– I don’t think this one is particularly compelling. And again if a known but not incredibly famous writer pitched this I can’t imagine the nets giving it a second thought.
I’m looking forward to this new show. I’ve been following Thom Hinkle’s projects over the year and the guy is a talent. And, or course, we all know about Steve’s talents.
I’ve been around TV too long to predict what will be a hit or not be a hit. Steve is a huge talent and if he can get all the stars to align just right (no pun intended)who knows, it may fly. After all people hanging around a coffee shop (“Friends”)doesn’t sounds that funny. Nor does a bunch of wacky people at a Network (30 Rock), or a blue collar overweight family (Roseanne) sound that funny. But people love/loved them. And what’s the unusual premise for Two and a Half Men? Two brothers, both divorced, one with a child living together? But it workes. I look forward to Steve’s project on the air and hope for the best from him and everybody that will be involved.
Definitely agree with Kay Kay, Sitcoms have great “characters” that’s why we love them. Sometimes it isn’t about the plot it’s about the characters and their circumstances. I love this idea, I think Steve Carell is brilliant!
You guys did pay attention to what the article said right? Steve Carell is going to write the show not star in it.
I being from Littleton where this new show is based in, am very excited to see what Steve Carell comes up with. Small towns are anything but boring and there are so many inter-relations and surprises that can come. I think with Steve Carell’s talent and drive to do something out of the ordinary could really become something very interesting. I can’t wait to see where this goes and I wish him luck!
