Deadline doesn’t post anonymous lists. But it turns out there’s sort-of The Black List for “aspiring” filmmakers (Iñárritu?), put together by Patrick Chu of Montecito Picture Company and Aaron Schmidt of Langley Park Pictures, and conceived by Jeff Schroeder, a WME assistant. dubbed “Viewfinder”, it polled studio execs, producers, and assistants for their picks for the top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos in 2010. The results were tallied, and all the videos are embedded on the website for everyone to view. Here’s their explanation: “Aspiring filmmakers need their venue. They need their list. Our hope was that you would share your love and admiration for filmmakers with us and the rest of the business by submitting your picks for the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010. And you did. The videos on this page represent your contributions to our list. We see this list as a valuable resource to expose lesser known directors and content to the industry. As it happens, the Black List originator, film executive Franklin Leonard reached out to this trio when they were developing their list, and met with them, and gave them “really good advice” based on his experiences with his list. Schroeder tells me: “We had a really strong response and there’s been a lot of traffic to the site already”:

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I think I’ve heard of Alejandro gonzalez inarritu somewhere
Exactly. These lists are ridiculous… just straight up masterbatorial
All of these guys are doing just fine… represented by the world’s top talent agencies and management companies. They will have very little problem getting work.
Maybe next year his buddy Guillermo can make it on this list too
Exactly. You can’t include a NIKE COMMERCIAL in a list of upcoming filmmakers. Ignorant, corporate, boring….this would be funny as hell if the makers of this list weren’t so insular, obedient, myopic and deeply boring…
Oh! I saw BLACKLIST, and I thought that finally somebody was doing The Industry a favor and listing Producers who had ripped off crewmembers!
Oly Obst has a hot one there
good to hear from you Oly
Hell yeah. I don’t know how to tell you this, but i’m kind of a big deal….I have many leatherbound books
does your apartment smell of rich mahogany as well?
Finally!!! Been a long time coming!
There’s a UK List, as well. And Melissa Silverstein is talking about a Pink List for female writers. The more lists added, the less relevent they all becom. And I kinda think that’s a good thing. All of these lists are limited to people with representation. That’s like called Major League Baseball’s Championship, the World Series when Japan isn’t involved.
Seriously, a Pink List??? WTF? Like women can’t compete equally so someone needs to make their own list because they’re inferior and need the help? pretty damn condescending. watch out for the Brown List(Hispanic writers), the Yellow List(Asian writers), The Pink Ribbon List(Breast Cancer writers), The Rainbow List (LGBT writers), The Really Black List (African American writers), The Livestrong & Tom Green List (Testicular Cancer writers), and on, and on, and on…
the great thing about writing, is that the name(s) on the front of the script and the race, creed, sexual orientation, etc., have nothing to do with how good or bad the content will be. everyone has the same chance to be great or blow.
I so agree with u. Great post!!!
I hope this guy Iñárritu makes it. It’s a long shot, but dreams can come true.
ummmmmmm Alejandro Inarritu?
How on earth is Alejandro González Iñárritu considered an aspiring filmmaker?
CAA and Miss Swafford are already in trouble huh?
Bring back Lesher
Alejandro González Iñárritu is an aspiring filmmaker? so stupid…
Alejandro González Iñárritu is an aspiring filmmaker? I guess an Oscar nomination for best director doesn’t count for much anymore.
And these films/commercials/music videos are not “by” the directors. They are directed by those individuals. But they have writers, actors, musicians, editors, DPs, etc. All who play a part in the collaboration that is a film/commercial/music video. It is by all of them. They all created it. It has no single author. Sorry.
Wrong.
Wrong?
It’s a collaborative medium… unless you’re one guy at a computer making an animated short. In that case, you’re right… it can be just one person.
Who needs another list? Uck. But the fact that “Ana’s Playground” by Eric D. Howell is nowhere to be seen says it all. This list is not based on “best”.
I think it’s safe to take Iñárritu off of the “aspiring” filmmaker list now.
Interesting. Alejandro González Iñárritu is an aspiring filmmaker?
With two Academy Award nominations and an encyclopedia of other award nominations, Alejandro González Iñárritu should be considered more than “aspiring.”
Another all-male list. Shocking.
settle down Nicole and Adrianna
Please name the great young female filmmakers who have made great shorts/commercials/videos who should be on the list.
Between youtube & vimeo I’m sure we can take a look at their work to see if you know what you are talking about.
that Alejandro González Iñárritu guy looks pretty talented, i hope really hope he makes it as an aspiring filmmaker…
Fantastic list. Always great to see new talent get a shot out there. I’ve seen a number of them and I really enjoyed “THE GIFT,” “THE RAVEN” and “PANIC ATTACK.” I wish the best to all of these guys and their careers. We always need to be looking for new talent. New voices should always be a priority and it’s always great when you find these young hungry talents. Going Viral is really the way to go these days.
I also suggest you check out Jon Watts’s “CLOWN” that’s pretty darn creepy and effective. You can find it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utmvmr7cgcg
then also be on the look out for Jonathan Villalpando and “REVENGE”, that’s pretty exciting, you can see that at:
http://www.whatisyourrevenge.com
Always happy to help discover a new talent. Best of luck to all of you!
Henry
No love for Rodrigo Blaas’ ALMA, huh? hmmm…
Nice work fellas
a smart idea and a well-curated list. these guys are on to something big.
you’re joking, right? these guys are on to something big? why not include ridley scott, spielberg, spike jonze too? all these dudes (and they are dudes) are repped by CAA/WME etc. how far into the unknown were these guys digging? answer: not at all. aspiring my ass – more like a way for these executives to promote their roster. completely lame.
i’m gonna create a list of all my talented friends too! Stay tuned…
Alejandro González Iñárritu is hardly an aspiring filmmaker.
Love the concept.
i’m sorry, but Alejandro González Iñárritu is not a newcomer anymore. but the rest on the list are potential cheap replacements if you want to cut the budget.
Yeah … and every single one of these short films features lots of digital effects. So, basically you cannot get noticed in Hollywood unless you’re a special effects guru or someone with a large bank account.
Stupid.
Completely agree. How does having some more boring special computer effects and explosions make you an up and coming STORYTELLER?
Their mission statement is: “Aspiring filmmakers need their venue. They need their list.”
Is being “aspiring filmmakers” really what these guys really have in common? REALLY? Alejandro González Iñárritu?
I have no problem with making a list of best short films, but rewrite your mission statement, please.
