Nu Image/Millennium has committed to a March start date for Playing the Field, the Gabriele Muccino-directed film that will star Gerard Butler. In the Robbie Fox-scripted comedy, Butler plays a retired world famous soccer star who tries to rebuild a relationship with his son and ex-wife by coaching his kid’s soccer team. While soccer is a hands-free sport, the mothers of the other kids can’t keep their hands off the coach, which imperils his plan. Jonathan Mostow, Kevin Misher, Heidi Jo Markel, Butler and Alan Siegel are producing. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Avi Lerner are executive producers. The film was developed under the title Slide, when the protagonist was a baseball coach. Butler and Muccino came aboard after the script was switched to soccer, but it languished until the Nu Image/Millennium guys stepped up.

Have you seen the number of websites devoted to him by his fans? Sure, maybe the majority of them are women, but they buy tickets, too. The Ugly Truth had the sexiest dance scene in it ever, and the ladies are crazy about him; thus the romcoms.

What happened to the Action Hero that was Gerard Butler ? Enough with the attempted comedy — it’s not working Gerry ! Get back to the Drama/Action roles and remind us why we loved your work. Show us the great actor that’s inside.
He’s got Coriolanus premiering in Russia in February, Machine Gun Preacher later this year, and is due to start on Burns at some point. There’s no reason why he can’t do a comedy once in a while. Anyone who has seen any of his interviews on YouTube knows he is hilarious. Besides, Gamer came out around the same time as TBH and it couldn’t have been more action-packed. Personally, once he’s older and male critics aren’t so jealous of his magnetism, he could end up being one of the best actors of this era IMHO.

Butler’s next 2 movies are: Shakespeare’s Coriolanus directed by & staring Ralph Fiennes and Machine Gun Preacher directed by Marc Forster both dramas so I guess he is due for another romantic comedy
for the ladies in 2012 LOL. Hopefully, he can do this movie using his own Scottish accent like he did in RocknRolla which he was great in. By the way the reason why producers like Butler his films make money The Ugly Truth -production budget $38 million made $206 Million world-wide.

Butler is in talks for the action film Afterburn and it is probably not ready to film yet so he has the time to fit in a film for the ladies. Butler is a versatile actor and not just an action star material and he definitely offers something beside the same bland boy/man romantic lead in comedies and I like that. But, he does need a better script this time.

gerry usually does a couple of really testing films, like 300 and butterfly on a wheel, then relaxes a bit and does a comedy or rom com., like ps i love you. then he did rocknrolla, nims island and then another testing film gamer. he is talented in every genre, unlike some actors who stick with the same genre, and dont venture into anything else. gerry is constantly showing us his versatility in his acting. i dont know any other actor who jumps from musical to drama, action, animated, comedy, thriller etc. like he does, so i wish people would stop slagging him off as a waste of space, before they get their facts straight. he has been acting now for 14 years and has finally made it to the top where he belongs after years of slowly making his way up through good and bad films, but hes kept going as acting is his life.
Gerard Butler has more to offer any producer, director and film than any other actor around today. He’s not a cookie cutter version of the Hollywood pretty boy; Gerard is a man’s man, and an actor’s actor. This will be a great vehicle to showcase his comedic talent once again.

If Avi and Nu Image are financing it will probably go direct to video because they don’t care if the movie is good or not. Never have.
Another fluff piece,very little acting required. I’m wishing as he gets older he will be offered better scripts. He is a fine actor as he has shown in “The Jury” and “Dear Frankie”.
This is great news! Gerry has a great comedic timing and sex appeal that always is a draw to the boxoffice. He just finished up two more serious flims, Coriolanus with Raplh Feinnes and Machine Gun Preacher about Sam Childers, the new age reverend who goes in to hostile Sudan and resues kids who are enslaved.

i agree with a lot of the people above that gerry is very versatile and can do many different roles, which is great. i love him in all genres. i think he does the comedic roles, which i personally think he is great in and very funny, in between doing some really serious topics. for example he did such a strong role as clyde in lac, and it took a lot out of him, so he then went on to do tbh just to have a bit of fun and not have to think to much in this role. the same was said for ps i love you, he had just done 300, which was physically challenging and also boaw which was mentically challenging so to unwind after these two serious films he did the comedy. i think it says a lot when he can take on lost of diverse roles and show different sides of himself. as said above by someone he has just finished two serious films this year and wants to relax a bit and have the pressure taken off him by doing a comedy, no harm in that. way to go gbutt.

Look, Gerard to me made THE UGLY TRUTH. I think he is better in movies that are thrillers or action films. The Director of this is fab, I think for a budget of 5 to 10, not very many locations, is the right budget for this to make a profit. But the issue is, Nuimage. They lie about budgets, bully buyers into paying 5 x’s what its worth but sorry to say, buyers are smarter, they know, even the Italian buyers. (Who Nuimage believes have offered over 8 mil to be co-producers with) Nuimage, stop bullying, grow up and get serious. Times have changed. Expendables & Rambo may have put you on the map, but you have to treat people with respect. WAKE UP.
Gerard do what ever you want to act in. You are great in every role I´ve seen. Those jealous people have to much time to sit in front of PC and critized movies they have not seen yet. If those do their jobs as good as he does they won´t have time to write crap.

Gerard Butler is a versitile actor who can go from being in an action movie, to drama, to comedy, to thriller, to romantic comedy; the man chooses the movies he wants to be in and he has made it clear in interviews that he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into one genre over the others. You want to talk about a one-note actor? How about Tom Cruise who ISN’T as bankable as he was since his Top Gun era.
