UPDATE: While we’ve been scattered to the winds today, other reports have Oren Aviv possibly taking the co-president of marketing post at 20th Century Fox. This is wildly premature since Fox’s Tom Rothman is still at the start of the process and was inundated with phone calls from job applicants after Deadline announced that NY-based film marketer Pam Levine stepped down Tuesday after 16 years at the studio. “Those reports are overstating it,” an insider says. “He is one of the names in the mix, and probably a frontrunner, but I know Fox wants to meet with a couple others before making a final decision. Maybe even a darkhorse candidate from outside the industry.”
True, Fox wants a marketing exec to work in LA with Tony Sella. But let us caution that, if Oren Aviv is brought into Fox marketing, then the job would be much bigger than the one Levine held, more like chief creative officer. Insiders say that Aviv is by no means a sure thing. There is a “usual suspects” list of seasoned marketing execs that range from Valerie Van Gelder to Terry Press and Gerry Rich. And there’s the question of whether, after moving out of a marketing role to steer production for Disney, Aviv will be content to step back into a marketing role and share the post with Tony Sella?
Aviv has kept a low profile since leaving Disney early this year, but he resurfaced earlier this fall when he joined the Board of Directors of Digital Artists. Aviv has been advising them on digital content, production, creative, branding, and strategy.

They are all top notch … and all have different strengths. Best of luck to whomever. I think Fox has some of the best marketing out there right now.
They should hire Jim Gallagher.
Oren and Tony?!?!?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Please please please let this happen!
Oren Aviv spelled backwards is Viva Nero.
Viva Nero! Viva Nero! Viva Nero!
Hey, listen we live in a chaotic mess over here. Anything that shakes up the status quo and finally brings in a big picture professional is welcome news. More of the same is not going to help. We need someone with some vision who knows how to market a damn movie. Someone, anyone, lead us! Anyone who actually works in Fox Marketing knows I’m right.
Really? I just watched Knight & Day on a lark with my folks last night and was surprised how okay it was. I kept thinking THAT shot should have been in the trailer, THIS line should have been in the trailer, etc. The marketing for that film was way, way, way off track.
Oren is overrated and crearively challenged as was evidenced by his weak slate and poor instincts at Disney. Worse yet he’s political and has an inflated ego. Not qualities that will go far at all-business Fox.
Thanks for the keen insight: I hadn’t noticed before that no one who succeeds at “all-business Fox” is political or has an inflated ego. It’s like a church social over there.
Jim Gallagher is the shot in the arm that Fox needs. He doesn’t waste time with politics, and just wants to win. All the time.
Nothing but politics and inflated egos at Fox (Tom Sherak was the king before he left), he should fit right in.
As a team — Chris Pula, Tom Sherak and Tony Sella were just great … but the truly fine-tuned machine was Rob Friedman, Sandy Reisenbach and Joel Wayne.
Oren is the best marketeer on the planet!
Don’t believe it?
Ask Oren…he’ll tell ya!
Oren is a major ass, very egotistical (co-president scenario didn’t go over very well with him at Disney), and kinda fat now. But he gives good direction, knows how to recognize talent and lets the talent do good work.
Oren Aviv spent as much time in the edit room as the editors did on the last bunch of Disney bombs. He most certainly does NOT let the talent do their jobs.
it’s almost like they put effort into finding the dumbest people for these jobs. I’m sure if chimpazee’s weren’t known for ripping people’s faces off they’d attempt to hire them as well.
Tim Palen at Lions Gate should be considered. He has done an amazing job with very little resources. Fox needs to get bold.
Oh sure, Tim Palen really marketed the hell out of THE NEXT THREE DAYS! Take a Russell Crowe adult thriller, mix in Oscar-caliber talent, and open the movie to …. $6.5 million. As a studio, you have to go out of your way to open a film that poorly.
Lionsgate markets Tyler Perry, Saw, and Expendables well i.e. niche, genre schlock. Very little evidence that anyone there knows how to market anything outside of that box.
Tim Palen, good grief.
Levine stepped down???? Ha. Oren Aviv is one of the most egomaniacal people in this industry, not a team player. Hope they know what they’re getting into with him.
You don’t get to stay somewhere for 20 years without getting results. Having worked with Oren, I found him to be super smart and good at his job. It’s not better here since he left.
Tom,
If you hire Oren, give him the keys to your office right there and then. He’ll knife you in the back quicker than you can say “independent production deal.”
To Disney Guy,
Are you high? Half the town has stayed someplace for 20 years and not achieved any results. Simply kept their head down, stroked the boss, took credit for the wins, pretended to have no involvement with the loosers and rode the gravy train all the way to retirement. I am amazed how many top execs are truly incompetent but really know how to play the game. Oren is right in the middle of everything said above. If he goes to Fox he will have problems though, I think most people know that.
If Oren is psychotic racist, sexist and homophobic, he’ll fit right in. Pam Levine was the only adult there so I pity anyone who deals with the Fox marketing catastrophe.
They should really do something unique- Hire Terry Press and Vollman and market movies. Just saying.
That’s the smartest comment I’ve seen on here in weeks.
I’ve worked with most of the people mentioned as potential replacements. The one that makes the most sense is Jim Gallagher. He’s a strategic leader and a brilliant adult, and Fox desperately needs both those things. He’s the first (and last) person Tom should talk to.
Kroger Babb would like the job. Look what he did with “Mom & Dad.”
Second the vote for Jim Gallagher!
Here Here for Press/Vollman!
