After New Line Cinema announced Cate Blanchett’s return to Middle Earth for ‘The Hobbit,’ I’m told that Orlando Bloom will likely be the next original cast member set for an encore. He’s near a deal to return as Elven archer Legolas. And it’s for more than a cameo, I’m told. I’d have expected them to first set Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) or Hugo Weaving (Elrond), whose characters figured in the book. But those talks have been arduous and aren’t completed yet.

YES!! Pleaseeeee bring Orlando Bloom as Legolas.. I love him as an actor..Everyone will love it…
have any of you think that with galadirel(sp??)..she was there becase of her role in the whole slayer of the kin deal…so she there..as for legolas…i think he there becase of his long ages deal…but he could be his younger vers of his dad..or grandfather…same with aragon too..but then again i could be wrong…
Actually, as a fan, I think it’s stupid. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Cate B.)
They took too many liberties with LOTR, but still managed to make a decent movie. Now their going to screw up the Hobbit? Why not just write your own story, rather than screwing it up with some idiots vision, who could not be bothered with reading the original story. Sounds like they’d make better congressmen, than movie makers. Must be one of those HBO collaborations.
True, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett are great actors, however, there is no place for there characters in The Hobbit. It was bad enough when Jackson extended the female roles in The Lord of The Rings, but even to a big fan of the trilogy it wasn’t all that noticeable.
But this move will be and it’s a stupid move, there is no earthly reason for them to be in the Hobbit. If their appearance would add anything to the story then Tolkien would have put it in. I hardly think Jackson is in a position to be re-writing Tolkien.

At a moment, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the Dwarfs and we learn later that he was to the White Council… Council with Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman et probably others… People should read the
Silmarillon and other books before saying anything
This is GREAT news! Oh yes, bring back Orlando Bloom as Legolas!! Can’t wait…can’t wait!
I seem to remember these guys sticking elves in where they don’t belong before (Helms Deep anyone?). But to make Legolas a central character just because Orlando tests well with female audiences would do a serious disservice to what has been so far a fantastic movie franchise. With that being said it is quite likely that Legolas was around for the events that happened in the Hobbit. And since the story will have to be tweaked to make it into a movie I don’t see any reason we couldn’t have Legolas appear in a few scenes. Think the feast the elves are having when they imprison the dwarfs and The battle of five armies. Possibly confiding with Thranduil about the Dwarfs. I would strongly urge Peter Jackson to be very sly about this, keep his speaking lines to a minimum and please don’t use Legolas to do things that are done by other characters in book he should only be in the background and thats it.
Personally, I can see Galadriel and Legolas as both justifiable and making sense. Galadriel being part of the White Council that is responsible for ridding Mirkwood of the Necromancer (Sauron). Gandalf alludes to their meeting in the Hobbit, Peter probably intends to actually show it.
Legolas is at LEAST 500 years old (per The Two Towers) and probably much older, so he would have definitely been alive and likely involved in some way. My one and ONLY beef with this is that they have not yet cast Bard, and so far there’s no indication that they’re even going to and Legolas is an archer, so… Does anyone else fear where this is going?
i love love orlando bloom! i love lord of the rings!! i love legolas!!! but he;s not in “The Hobbit”! so i dont think he should be in the movie!!! Bilbo and the dwarves do go to Mirkwood, but there’s no mention of Legolas!! there’s no point to having a charater in a movie tha’ts not in the book!!! it’s a waste of money and time!!!
If thats so,then its a big WOW! i so love this news. I am such a huge fan of LOTR trilogy and id love to see Orlando Bloom back on screen as Legolas Greenleaf..I would really watch it in 3D on its premiere night.. Orlando appearing on The Hobbit seems to be appealing to the audience..we are all excited..
I suppose on the one hand, you could get away with it, by showing Legolas as an extremely battle hardened warrior, and yes, it would be great to see him featured, in the halls of his father, in the negotiations for the Arkenstone, and in the battle of the five armies…For any die-hard Legolas fan, it would be reason enough to go and see the Hobbit – after all, as has been said, Legolas is a fantastic character, and he was one of many reasons the trilogy did so well…
As a Hobbit fan, I don’t think it’s necessary, but I can see where it would be useful to replace secondary characters with established ones – just as Arwen replaced Glorfindel in rescuing Frodo – makes it easier for people who are not LotR afficionados to appreciate the magic of Tolkien’s world…after all, let’s not forget, this movie is a business first … I just hope to the Valar that they dont try and make Legolas kill Smaug…that cool he is not .
Orlando Bloom will get “Leggy” again!
I’d heard The Hobbit will consist of two movies. One film will tell the events of the book, while the second will cover events that occurred between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of Fellowship. It would make sense to have Galadriel and Saruman appear in the second film, and since Bilbo and the dwarves meet the Mirkwood elves in the book, it would also make sense for Legolas to be one of them, seeing as how the character of The Elven King in the book must be Thranduil, Legolas’ father.
Oh my gosh, awsome! I do realize that he’s not in the book, but who cares! I mean, he was alve then! In fact, Tolkien even had created the name when he was writing The Hobbit! Though he didn’t actaully have the character yet…… But anyways, this would be great for Orlando!
Uhm…. I’m not going to pass judgement on this just yet, I mean, I loved Legolas in LOTR, but he isn’t in the Hobbitt. Like, at all. So I’m kind of on the fence. I trust Peter Jackson to know what he’s doing in putting Galadriel and Legolas in the new movie.. We shall see…..
It makes perfect sense for Legolas and Galadriel to both appear in The Hobbit movie adaptaion. It’s become tiresome reading and hearing people say they should not be or do not appear in the books. This is both true and false.
*MINOR SPOILER WARNINGS*
Many important scenes involve the elfs of Mirkwood, and more than one is set in their own realm. Legolas being more than old enough + the Mirkwood elfs involvement in many story elements + Legolas’ father being their king = he should appear to some extant in the movie. Is he specificaly mentioned in the book? No. But it would simply make no sense at all for him not to appear.
Galadriel is in a similar situation as Legolas. Is she mentioned specificaly in the book? No. But it is well documented in Tolkien’s writing that when Gandalf leaves the Dwarves along their journey he has meetings and events with the Council about the Necromancer in Mirkwood and the still unkowm location of the ring. Galadriel sits on that council and would be heavily involved in all it does. It simply makes no sense at all not to show Galadriel if they show any of Gandalf’s story away from the Dwarves, which they are.
Well, I liked Orlando Bloom a lot in Legolas. I think he did a good job for a young actor. Let’ not forget that he is supposed to be an Elf, with thousand of years wisdom and that, acoording to Tolkien, Elves are what humans would be if they were perfect. So I say, good job.
Now, as for his coming back as Legolas for The Hobbit, it makes perfect sense. He is the son of the King, a major player, and centuries old already. He just can’t disappear like this. And if he’s not in The Hobbit book, it is because Tolkien created Legolas for The Lord of the Rings. So, if you take the books individually, he shouldn’t be here. But if you take all of Tolkien’s works and make the story as true as possible with all of them, then he HAS TO BE HERE !!!
And I am very pleased of it !!!!
At last somebody who knows what it is all about… Tks thilwen
I don’t know how I feel about bringing Orlando back as Legolas. Even though elves were practically immortal, Orlando Bloom has aged quite a bit since he played the part of the very youthful-appearing elven prince. I think it would be too noticeable. I could possibly see him playing his own father, Thranduil. With some slight alterations in appearance, I think he could pass as his father, the elven king.
I would like to see more of LOTR, so if they add in all the original main characters then it would be better. If you want to stick to the original story, then go read the book.
O M G! All of you are soo jumping to conclusions and the films haven’t even seen fruition. For all we know Peter J and company may probably tell some sort of history like he did in the first film of LOTRs FELLOWSHIP, for filler. And even though he mentioned that he wasn’t going to “BRIDGE” the movie, he could, COULD, mind you, end the film with a little more history to fill the story and have Gandalf on his way into the Shire with subs reading “60 yrs later.”
Afterall. There is only on book to the Hobbit and two films are being made as to the LOTRs three for three.
Guys- it is official that there won´t be a bridge movie, so you can stop biting each other´s head off about that now!
Just go to http: //www. councilofelrond. com and you can find the latest news about the movies´ development as well as the whole story of the not-to-be-bridge!
although Legolas does not appear in the book ‘The Hobbit’ it makes sense to have him in the movie. This will allow Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro to show a side of Legolas that we have not seen yet: Prince of Mirkwood, with all the attendant duties and responsibilities. we have never seen how Legolas acts when he is at home among his own people, but you can bet that it’s probably different than the way he acts around Aragorn. of course there could still be comedy, but I think Legolas will be a more anxious and angry character in this movie. given his first reaction to Gimli in LoTR one can imagine how Legolas might react to nine dwarves, none of whom are even trying to be friendly. if one is going to have Legolas in the movie, then the role has to be played by Orlando Bloom, as there is no other actor (at least to my knowledge) who could even come close to playing this character well.
Why not just let Orlando Bloom play his dad Thranduil? Slightly modify the look and that would be really cool. To ask the original cast to reprise their roles seems awkward since the LOTR films originally began filming 11 years ago. Aren’t these characters suppose to be younger? Unless they intend to do a Tron type special effect with the characters, it wouldn’t really make much sense. I love Orando Bloom as well but I think he should be playing the Elven King not Legolas.
Well, we all know that Legolas is Thranduil’s son. They go to Thranduil’s court. You HAVE to HAVE Legolas right there. Given his expertise in warfare, he most likely will be fighting in the Battle of the Five Armies too!
Ai, please no. I’ve just about had enough of awful Legolas fanfictions these days. This will only ruin the fandom even more. I wouldn’t mind it if he was just in for a few shots, but I really hope he doesn’t play a major role in the movie.
Is Thranduil cast, by the way?
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssss…
I really wish to see Orlando as Legolas again…
