EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that Pam Levine, co-president of domestic marketing with Tony Sella and a 16-year veteran of Twentieth Century Fox, is leaving. She moved to New York four years ago which has been her base of operation since then. But my sources say her replacement will be hired, probably from outside the company, for a position in Los Angeles to work with Sella. ”The bifurcation of having co-heads in different cities just wasn’t effective, whether she stayed or not,” an insider tells me. Actually, Levine quit the job when she moved to NY but Tom Rothman convinced her to stay. “People have called her the left brain to Tony’s right brain: “He’s the creative guy and spots guy, and she was the research gal and media buys gal, the yin to her yang. It worked when she was out here, but when she moved to NY it just didn’t work anymore,” a source tells me.
UPDATE: I just received this statement from Fox Film Entertainment bosses Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos: “Pam is an exceptional and rare marketing talent, one of the very best our business has ever seen. For some time, she and we have discussed the need to centralize all marketing functions in LA, and the conflict that presents with the life she loves in NY. We are disappointed but respectful of her decision to continue her career in NY. We will miss her acumen, insight, creativity, and passion, but know that only great things lay ahead for her. We are deeply grateful for all that she has given to Fox over so many years of consistent and unparallel marketing success.”
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Good for her. She was one of the few good ones in Building 88 at Fox. How she (or anyone) lasted so many years under an egotistical asshole like Rothman is beyond me.
In addition to an outstanding performance, she always treated everyone with respect whether they were an assistant or top level executive. She was loved by all and I’m sure she’ll be missed.
And since I know for a fact Tom Rothman reads Deadline: Hey Tom- You’re an ass and nobody likes you. Be more like Jim G, at least he respects his employees.
if you feel so strongly why not give us your name?? cowardice is not attractive either
The best post was the douche that wrote, “if you feel so strongly why not give us your name?? cowardice is not attractive either.”
And then signed it — Anonymous!!!!
What a tool!
The Anonymous poster is probably one of Rothman’s boot-licking toadies. Many of those at Fox.
Be more like Jim G? Respects his employees? That’s ludicrous since he’s a thug. At least Rothman will argue a point, Jim is just imperious.
As for Pam, the conventional wisdom is that Chernin – a big, uh, fan of hers – made the Tom/Jim give her a new deal prior to his departure and now it has lapsed.
It will be unfortunate for whomever gets the job because Fox has an abysmal record of external hires at senior levels in the theatrical group. Besides, they’ll also need to contend with Godsick constantly undermining them because he definitely thinks the job should be his…
I think the nest thing for Fox is to completely clean house on the 3rd floor of building 88. Specifically, their head of publicity and Field. They have so much dead weight up there that lack leadership, strategic thinking, etc. They all operate out of fear which is reflected in their marketing campaigns.
You are only as good as your leadership and since Fox lacks any leadership, their films will continue to fail.
Tom Rothman…
Oh, where to start with you? A wise man admits his mistakes, corrects them and prospers. Admit that promoting Emma Watts and Alex Young to co-Presidents of Fox was a serious error. You recognized Alex was a train wreck (an “unstoppable” train wreck) and fired him. Now the time has come to fire Emma and move forward with some new blood who bring bold ideas to the Fox conference table that will lead to making better, smarter and more successful films for a legendary studio that deserves better.
Emma and Alex were never qualified for the job that you awarded them. Alex’s four film as President were all expensive losers:
A-Team (disaster)
Wall Street (expensive disappointment)
Unstoppable (very expensive bomb)
Predators (disappointment).
Emma is about to deliver Gulliver’s Travels to Fox and that film cost $160m before marketing and you know it. While we are on the subject of marketing cost, you spent a bloody fortune on marketing Unstoppable both before and after it opened just so it could gross domestically what every single Denzel film does — between $70 and $80m. Your desperate need to save face cost Fox another $15 million.
If Emma had spent half the amount of time preparing to run Fox as she did campaigning for the job and pushing you to fire (sorry, transition) Hutch Parker to Regency, she would have been the greatest President in Fox’s history. She never bothered to learn how to do the job and her tenure has been a disaster. She is afraid to bring anyone with a brain over as a VP so she gets the same crap year in and year out from Steve Asbell and Peter Kang.
You must fire Emma Watts and most of the VPs under her. The worst kept secret in town is that Fox has the worst bench in Hollywood. Fox has become the place where original ideas go to die. One can imagine the lack of imagination on display at one of your weekly staff meetings.
Tom: “We had the worst year ever. Go to the X Men well. Check. Greenlight another Wolverine. Check. What do we have in the library because none of our VPs can develop anything original? We cannot do another Alien sequel so we will do an Alien prequel. Let’s go to the Die Hard well again. Get Bruce Willis on the phone. See if he will come off his quote again.”
Where is your Matrix?
Where is your Inception?
Where is your Jason Bourne series?
Your 300?
Your Dark Knight?
Please don’t tell me it is Avatar. No one believes that. You sold off huge chunks of Avatar in one of the truly great unreported stories in the history of the entertainment business. You were so uncertain about the film you sold off another chunk 5 weeks before the film opened — that decision cost Rupert over half a billion dollars. When you take credit for Avatar people laugh. Honestly, they do.
You are certainly aware that Peter Rice is being groomed to take your job. He is following the same route Peter Chernin did by gaining an understanding of the Fox television empire that you simply do not possess. When you add in his Fox Searchlight profit vs. cost figures, he has a total and complete edge over you in all categories.
Why not go out by making some truly groundbreaking films that you and your new staff actually develop from the ground up? WB has shown time and time again that you can produce a huge crowd-pleasing tentpole film that is also smart. Now it is your turn.
Emma Watts has been at Fox for twelve years. So has Peter Kang. So has Steve Asbell. If they were remotely capable of delivering a Matrix, Inception or a Jason Bourne series they would have done so by now, certainly at least once. They cannot and never will.
You have become the joke of the business and you have the power to turn that feeling around by making a few simple decisions. Clean house. Get some new blood with fresh ideas and take some risks. What do you have to lose?
Please recognize that you will never be given credit for James Cameron’s films, nor will you be celebrated for simply recycling library titles that Joe Roth and other former Fox Presidents created long before your troubled tenure.
WOW! You hit it right on the nail! It’s good that Pam is leaving but they need to completely clean house which should include Jeffrey Godsick who completely lacks any leaderships skills or tact.
Love when angry assistants post. They cut right through the mountains of bullshit.
Hey idiot if you despise tr that much find a new job
So who’s office do you work for, Rothman or Gianopulos. Working to get brownie points I see.
Now they gotta get rid of Sella. This year has been such a debacle and he should get the most blame. Just when you think their slump can’t get any more embarrassing, another flop comes along. If he was as great as the hype, that wouldn’t be happening. Any decent person who has dealt with his erratic personality has probably been insulted, certainly offended and on a bad day, shocked by his immaturity, his lack of any leadership and management skills and his refusal to treat anyone with respect. For the sake of the movie biz, I hope the housecleaning continues!
As a Fox survivor, I’m pretty sure they’re scapegoating Pam. She was the only one with any class and you can’t blame her for wanting to get the hell out of LA. Now how are they going to find a sucker to put up with Tony Sella’s bizarre personality disorders (and other…let’s just say “issues”)? If Rothman knew the disgusting things Sella says about him, he wouldn’t be there making everyone miserable and announcing in the newspaper that he totally screwed up the Knight & Day campaign. You can blame Watts all you want but Fox takes pride in their ability to sell shitty product to gullible consumers. Why aren’t they considering Godsick? Is it because of all the Walden flops? Normally, it’s so incredibly easy to fail up at Fox!
classic hollywood thinking: shoot the messenger. you might be able to buy an opening weekend (see “unstoppable”) by throwing tons of marketing $ but if your production arm keeps giving you crap to sell, well, people see it for what it is. undoubtedly you are a producer or exec whose brilliant piece of crap couldn’t be sold by p.t. barnum so you go to the oft-used but reliable ‘the film was marketed terribly.’ wahhhh.
I don’t work at Fox Film, but I find it unacceptable how senior management treats the employees there. Hopefully Chase Carey cleans it up.
Dang, I get sick of reading comments from the disgruntled about how mean and dumb and imperious movie exex are. GET OVER IT! The movie business is tough, competitive and populated by deeply damaged people avenging playground slights, Mommy’s cruelty, Daddy’s absence. TWAS EVER THUS! And it ain’t gonna change. If you don’t want to work with douche bags, stay in Des Moines.
I worked as Pam’s intern many years ago when I was doing my MBA and she was head of research, and have nothing but nice things to say about her. Savvy, smart, kind and a great listener. She was a terrific role model at the time (and also wasn’t as egomaniacal as others in the company), and I wish her the best of luck with her new endeavors.
they should consider Godsick for the job. He’s proven himself over the years at Fox as a worthy candidate to uphold or should I say, build up the integrity Fox once had. With Sella and Godsick with his leadership skills on a rise, underneath the Godfather Rothman, Fox could actually be unstoppable.
Hopefully you didn’t pay a lot for school, fox intern. Godsick is as insecure, callow, and talentless an exec as any in the entertainment business. On second thought, he’d be perfect for the job given the current streak they’re on…
Levine knew her job and did it well. She will be missed, but Fox will be more than okay. Great stuff in the pipeline for 2011 & 2012. As the great Hunter S. Thompson was wont to say, I KNOW THESE THINGS.
Are you serious re: Godsick???? You must not work for Fox nor have worked for Fox because Godsick lacks any leadership skills!! He has no tact. And if he is capable of doing such an amazing job, what happened to Walden?
His incompetence is nearly matched by his laziness. But, not quite.
The post by poor fox has quite a bit of great insight. Where I believe they miss the mark a little is by placing so much blame on emma and alex and the lower executive ranks. Not that emma and alex have been any good. They were totally unqualified for that job when they were promoted into it, but then again, so are many presidents of production. Others around town have had the benefit of better upper management with strong leadership skills to help them grow into the job. Tom, on the other hand, is an absolute nightmare to work for. He is an egomaniac and a micromanager. He sets the tone for the entire building – everyone has been taught that dissenting opinions are not tolerated. Its the Tom Rothman show and everyone knows it. Thats how you get these seemingly empty vessels like steve Asbell and Peter Kang after so many years of working there. In actuality those guys aren’t the issue. I worked on a project for steve a few years back and he was one of the most insightful execs I’ve ever dealt with. I haven’t dealt with kang, though several friends have and they all have said good things. I also know much of the newer crew that has come in and most are pretty solid executives. Where the trouble comes is when Tom gets into the mix… Yes, he still heavily develops scripts, down to minor dialogue changes. Tom can go in and fire them all, it really doesn’t matter. We will see the same lowest-common-denominator outcome that they’ve been churning out for years because Tom is authoring all of it from top to bottom.
Walden went downhill not due to the marketing campaign but because of the bad movies it produced. No one could sell that crap. How can you clinical retards say Godsick is lazy. Everyone at Fox recognizes that he has the leadership to take this company above and beyond. He’s a people person as well and can get along with everyone else in the office and therefore, establishes a common ground with his workers. Once he does that, a trust is created between the two and they will work harder for Godsick and he has ideas that can take Fox to the top.
You have got to be kidding about Godsick, or this is Godsick, who trolls comment sections to post good things about himself. He is perhaps the most loathed person in building 88 and that says a lot. He is a bully, who has not vision and is simply not that bright. Rather than build a consensus when he had a shot at this job, he berated and belittled everyone to the extent people rebelled against him. No one can fathom how or why he has a job other than being Rothman’s henchman.
I hear that carol Sewell is quietly being considered….
The intern making the glowing comments about Godsick and Rothman is working on his brownie points. He will more than likely get a job because Fox loves suckups like him. If Rothman was that wonderful why is it that his day & date strategies where mostly failures.
Rothman would constantly go against the better advice from his International Division. Rothman is a thug like Gianapulos and the whole studio knows it.

I can confirm Princess Frank’s comments about Rothman’s micro-management and control from top to bottom. When things are done his way and fail someone else gets fired.
Mrs. Godsick you promised to stop posting after the other glowing comments you made about your son, er, husband.
So movie business is basically like high school.
The real problem there is Tony Sella, and he’s the one that should be leaving. But somehow someway he is still there, bullying people, screaming in the hallways. Jeffrey Godsick is two faced. Carol Sewell would rather be anywhere but at work. She won’t even return filmmakers phone calls! Pam was the only decent person over there. Fox would be lucky to get someone like Oren Aviv. But why would be want to take a Co-Head of Marketing position?
