UPDATE 3 PM: Ouch! The final Monday ratings came in, and Part 1 of the Skating with the Stars finale was adjusted down, way down, to a .5 in the 18-49 demo from 1.0 in the fast nationals that were inflated by NFL pre-emptions on ABC. That is down almost 40% from Skating‘s underwhelming ratings performance for the past couple of weeks. Also adjusted down was ABC’s Castle rerun (.7 for the 9-11 PM block.) And more bad news for new NBC comedy Perfect Couples. Its preview behind the Sing-Off finale also slipped down in the finals, to a 1.3. Overall, ESPN topped Monday night in all key measures for a fifth time this season, with its coverage of the Bears-Vikings game drawing 17.1 million viewers.
PREVIOUS 10 AM: After a very impressive sophomore run of NBC’s limited reality series The Sing-off leading into the finale last night, the two-hour closer (2.7/7 in adults 18-49) surprisingly posted a 18% week-to-week drop to rank as Sing-off‘s lowest-rated Monday telecast this cycle and tied as the lowest-rated overall. It still was the top-rated broadcast program on Monday night by a mile and was up 17% from the show’s finale last year. Immediately following the Sing-off finale, NBC aired a preview of new Thursday comedy series Perfect Couples (1.4/4), which held onto roughly half of its demo lead-in, not a promising sign heading into the series’ Jan. 20 debut at 8:30 PM on Thursday when NBC will also officially introduce comedies in the 10 PM hour. The dropoff for Sing-off was even more puzzling given the weak competition. Fox’s new game show Million Dollar Money Drop had a very slow start, drawing a 1.9/5 for its first hourlong episode at 8 PM and 2.0/5 for the 9 PM episode. ABC’s flop Skating with the Stars posted a 1.0/3 in 18-49 for Part 1 of its finale but that number was probably inflated by NFL pre-emptions of ABC programming in 4.5% of the country. (Skating has averaged a 0.8 demo rating for the past couple of weeks.) The reality series was followed by back-to-back Castle reruns (1.2/3 and 1.7/5), whose numbers will also probably go down in the finals. CBS aired wall-to-wall reruns led by Two and a Half Men (2.4/6) and How I Met Your Mother (2.0/6). NBC (2.2/6, 6.7 million) won the night in 18-49, while CBS (1.9/5, 7.4 million) was No.1 in total viewers and tied with Fox for second in the demo.

The Sing Off posted weak numbers because the results episode “SUCKED” to put it bluntly. They went completely away from what worked which was focusing on the acapella groups in the competition, to promoting the so-called vocal talents of the judges and special guests. There’s a reason why Boyz II Men haven’t had a hit album in years and it was evident by their performance on the show.
SO TRUE! My thoughts exactly.
1.4 huh? Sounds like Perfect Couples is going to be a Perfect Failure. Suck *that*, Olivia Munn.
What’s the big deal about Olivia Munn? She wasn’t even one of the most interesting or funny characters in the show. And that’s not saying much, because the rest of the cast was pretty lame and boring. If this is NBC half-assed answer to having another FRIENDS, they need to go back to the drawing board. This show was beyond awful.
Million Dollar Money drop promos looked like a hysterical mess of screaming greed. This is supposed to put us in the Christmas spirit?
Watched fox’s Million $ Drop last night. Couldn’t believe this was the best they could come up with. The whole premise is so gimmicky and staged, the contestants prepped and grilled into submission, and only 7 questions asked and answered in the entire hour running time. The pacing is glacial and the commercial cutaways infuriating.
I can’t imagine this lasting much longer.
“Perfect Couples” was simply bad… simply not funny. talk about forced comedy from the actors as well as the writer…Was this NBC’s poor attempt at a “Modern Family”? Don’t get how it even got on the air. It’s already DOA…
Everyone was, wisely, watching The Closer
Ha, totally. JK Simmons and Kyra Sedgwick was my 10 PM.
I know a lot of people, including myself, who stopped watching when On The Rocks was eliminated.
Note to NBC: If you want higher ratings, don’t vote off popular all male college groups like On the Rocks, who bring so much energy, enthusiasm, and awesome choreography to the stage!
In general, it might be a mistake to have big series wrap-up episodes only a few days away from Christmas. Travel, shopping, and random family events are sure to cut into the possible audience size for any show. I think that “Sing Off” played things pretty well, actually. Although they abandoned any real competition aspect for this episode and went for the “nice guy” approach all the way, they probably built a lot of good will among the fans of the four groups (+ guests) that were on the show. Next year they can tap those same singers for special appearances, etc., and their core audience might become very loyal.
Also… doesn’t this mean that NBC has been the ratings winner for 3 out of the last 4 nights? Who’d have predicted that?
Exactly, Anne. When the judges booted ‘On the Rocks’ – by far the best and most entertaining (although least diverse which is the reason for the elimination) – our family stopped watching. Judging by the ratings slide, so did many others.
Money Drop was slow, forced and ultimately just boring. A big pile of money does not a show make. Poor Kevin Pollak, what was he thinking ( other than national exposure and a regular paycheck, that is. . )? Torturous pacing, the game is milked to the nth degree. It’s mind-numbingly bad. Great set, though.
Reading these ratings posts all I can say is network TV is really a corpse that should be buried. If they didn’t have the NFL on most of these networks they wouldn’t have ratings at all. Football is the number one show in the US followed by a handful of other shows and and the worldwide web. How people keep mining big salaries for making this money losing dreck I will never know.
No OTR- Not interested in viewing the show. Everyone I know tuned out. You can buy their CD on itunes.
Everyone I knew turned off their TV the second the kicked off our favorite group. Why NBC?
I think that the judges voting off “On the Rocks” was a stupid mistake. They were good enough to be in the finale. but then they eliminated them , then didn’t eliminate anyone else. OtR brought fun and laughter to the stage. i didnt stop watching, only because i was rooting for Committed after the prevoius episode.
