The finale of Univision’s hot telenovela Soy Tu Duena led the Spanish-language broadcaster to a nightly win among all broadcast networks on Monday in the adults 18-49 demographic. (ESPN was likely the top network overall with Monday Night Football.) Paced by the Soy Tu Duena finale (2.7/7 in 18-49) at 9 PM, which was the highest rated program on any broadcast network last night, Univision topped the night with a 2.0/6 in the demo, edging CBS (1.9/5). CBS, which aired all-repeats, was No.1 in total viewers (7.6 million). ABC, NBC and Fox also aired reruns. With several time-slot wins for Soy Tu Duena and nightly demo wins this and last week against rerun competition, Univision is putting its English-language rivals on notice. Of course, it takes a big ratings performer like Soy Tu Duena to do that. The drama ranks as the most watched telenovela in the U.S. ever and the second highest-rated in 18-49.

“Univision” who? I tought this was an American entertainment news website, how many Americans watch “Univision”? — so how can you make the claim that the spanish-only language channel won “among all broadcast networks on Monday in the adults 18-49 demographic”? Typical liberal ridiculous article. Let’s see if this time my first amendment comment is not deleted by the “moderators” of the site.
Hello??? Many Americans speak more than one language!! i happen to be American and i speak spanish…..and i love watching novelas on univision!! =)
@ Chris: sadly, like approximately half of the population of this country, you seem to lack a basic understanding of logic and reasoning.
1) “Let’s see if this time my first amendment comment…” Your first amendment freedom of speech claim DOES NOT APPLY AGAINST PRIVATE COMPANIES, it applies against GOVERNMENT entities. Deadline Hollywood is a private company that can censor whatever and whomever it wants. Again, you do not have a first amendment right to post on this comment board.
2) “I thought this was an American news site…” Surprise! America is made up of many different kinds of people. I realize and appreciate that not all states are as diverse as the coastal states, but surely you do know enough to know that there are Spanish-speaking US citizens. Even former Florida governor, Jeb Bush, is has a wife who is of Mexican descent, yet who is still a US citizen. Therefore, reporting on Spanish language programming is very American.
3) “How can you make the claim that the Spanish-only language channel won…” Um…because it did. More human beings in the 18-49 demographic watched Univision than any broadcast network in that time slot. What is so confusing about this?
I’m not going to get into name-calling, nor will I try to make you look foolish for your political beliefs. You’re doing a fine job of that on your own.
Univision IS an American network.
No. This is an entertainment website that is based in Los Angeles. Not an American entertainment site.
Get a clue. Film/TV/music etc. are global mediums.
The big four are embarrassed. Trust me!
I don’t understand what the big deal is. All the spanish speaking people are watching this and everyone else is watching everything else, fragmenting the english speaking audience. Of course this will have higher numbers, especially when everything is in reruns. No big deal. Please don’t start broadcasting these ghastly soap operas in prime time on the major networks.
During rerun season, I only watch dvds or netflix dvds/streaming.
I hope the so-called Big Four networks see the writing on the wall and begin airing Spanish language fare as well. Hispanics are fast becoming a majority in this country and the networks need to give the people what they want. Within the next decade you’re going to see Spanish language sitcoms, dramas and mini-series on CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox. In a capitalist society, majority rules. The rest of you can deal with it. And suck it.
Well Monty, I hate to tell you this, but you are totally wrong on so many levels. One… For what you propose to happen would take decades and for the Hispanic assimilation into American culture to not happen at all. Unfortunately for your hypothesis, Hispanics in America are multilingual and prefer the use of English outside of the home because outside of Los Angeles, most people speaky the English.
“In a capitalist society, majority rules. The rest of you can deal with it. And suck it.”
Well, in this country, the majority speaks ENGLISH. Apparently some who slither here can’t or won’t deal with it and learn OUR language.
Someone is riding the crazy train, or the stupid boat.Spanish Language fare, as you call it, will never get airtime on second tier english language cable networks, yet alone a major american network.America is a majority english speaking country, and like you said, majority rules. So lets no get to ahead of ourselves with the ratings for tu yu tortilla, or whatever it’s called.
you’re loco vato
we will not see any spanish language on big 4 networks. more like to see english language on univision.
Uh hm. keep in mind that many of us spanish speaking people that watch spanish language soap operas also speak english.
We are all “wise latinas” now. Reconquista!!! Viva La Raza!!!
What’s Univision??? and who cares??
Wow chris. Agenda much? Numbers are numbers. They aren’t looking at race…unlike you.
Why is it that anytime a story about a culture making strides comes along someone has to bash it. It just makes them sound scared to death of any color but white. Oh and thanks for the “liberal” cherry on top! Makes you sound like a mindless lockstep who can’t think for themselves. Congrats!
You know what I love? This is the same type of guy who will gladly claim that just because 3 million people watch Bill O Reilly, that means were a conservative country. Meanwhile, 50 Million people are watching something else on the other networks.
Chris,
Univision is an American company. News alert: Americans speak Spanish.
Your comment is so bigoted I don’t even know where to begin.
we are going to rule america one day. majority rules!
soon, USA networks will be catering to brown people, NOT WHITES!
better start learning spanish.
Omg turn off the gas idol starts in 2 weeks.
This is quite significant and will definitely boost more and and more Spanish sitcoms and dramas. Time to learn some Spanish to enjoy these serials or sports will do for me.
America? Are you talking North Or South America? Ok, I think it’s safe to say you are talking about North America since the USA is in North America.
Now, lets look at the map. North America consists of Canada, USA, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and various other little island nations in the Caribbean.
So looking at that I would say America speaks Spanish, English, French and various American Indian languages. So I guess America does speak Spanish…
I think he was talking about the United States of America, not North or South, since he most likely a citizens of the United States of America, were the language commonly spoken is english.
Who watches Univision? More people than the big 4, apparently!
You do know that Univison show only won the 18-49 demographic on a slow night, not the total viewership, right?
Is that the program with people dressed like Bumble Bees?
Im from Ohio and not hispanic. Hey up to a few years ago i didnt have a clue what a telenovela was and didnt have any interests in learning anything about any culture but my own. One night I was fliping through the channels and came accross what it looked like an action movie it turned out to be a telenovela. From this moment I was hooked I had no idea what they were saying but it made me learn a new language and has recently gotten me a big promotion at work. Soon after I got into them I got my wife into them as well its something we both enjoy and has gotten us closer these past years. I actually did see soy tu duena
And it was very good from the storie line, to the amazing eye popping locations, and the acting of the actors like Lucero.
