BREAKING NEWS… 5TH UPDATE & WRITETHRU: “It’s not over yet,” said a detective tonight
when asked if the investigation into popular Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen’s slaying was concluded after tonight’s suicide. At an impromptu cops’ news conference, these details were confirmed: Beverly Hills Police at 5:30 PM went to serve a search warrant on a man at the Harvey Apartments in a seedy part of Los Angeles at 5640 Santa Monica Boulevard between N Wilton and Western Ave near Hollywood. He’d been under police surveillance in connection with the case. But the unidentified “person of interest” — as he was called by detectives tonight at the press conference — had a handgun and fatally shot himself after 6 PM just as the police were approaching in the lobby. He died of a “self-inflicted” gunshot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Right now there is a massive police and press presence at the Harvey Apartments because this is the first public development related to the case that has intense interest in Hollywood and beyond. (See Hollywood journalist Allison Hope Weiner’s reporting for Deadline below.)
Earlier this evening, all the BHPD will say officially was this: “At the time of the shooting, BHPD Detectives were on scene conducting a follow-up investigation. There were no other injuries related to the incident. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation, there are no further details available at this time”. The Los Angeles Times reported that ”detectives received information suggesting the man would be in his apartment this evening. When police approached the man at the lobby of the apartment complex, he backed up and refused their orders to raise his hands. He then pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head, the sources said. He was declared dead at at the scene.”
Hollywood journalist Allison Hope Weiner has been following the Ronni Chase murder case and emails Deadline the following details:
UPDATE: Another source close to the investigation noted that the police are currently searching the Harvey Apartments where tonight’s shooting occurred. My source says that “If the subject turns out to have what police are looking for in his room, they can rule out that this was a mob hit.”
My police source stated that it’s not clear that Chasen knew her shooter, only that she “may have known her shooter.” The important information here is that if someone is being surprised by a shooter, they’d be shot through the shoulder or the back and then the bullet would enter the chest. It’s significant that Chasen was shot on the right breast plate in a cluster, indicating that she’d turned towards her shooter. Something occurred that prompted her to turn towards her shooter.
The police source added that because the shooter had such a steady hand, it indicated that they were an expert in firearms. So police were checking Chasen’s computer information against local shooting ranges.
A police source familiar with the Ronnie Chasen murder investigation revealed to me earlier this evening that authorities were on their way to “pick-up a suspect in the Ronnie Chasen murder.” A spokesman for the Beverly Hills Police Department, Sergeant Sean Davis, told me that the man who shot and killed himself this evening was merely a “subject” in the follow-up probe of the Chasen slaying.
One air bag deployed and her window was up and the other window shot out by bullet. The source noted that Chasen was still alive after hit and her hands were tightly wrapped around the steering wheel. The current theory is that, after Chasen was shot, she tried to get away and then lost consciousness and her foot slipped off the brake and her car went into a pole.
The police source noted that Ms. Chasen was not randomly targeted and that they’re convinced that her murder was not gang-related.
Chasen, 64, was reportedly shot five times in the chest in the early morning hours of November 16th as she was driving her late model Mercedes Benz west on Sunset Blvd towards her Westwood condo after attending a premiere and party for the Screen Gems film Burlesque. Her shocking death hit Hollywood hard because so many liked Chasen, a petite and hardworking PR-woman who specialized in Oscar campaigns.
PREVIOUS: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Beverly Hills Police went to serve a search warrant on a man in a Hollywood hotel tonight in the first concrete news related to the case of the shooting death of Ronni Chasen. The paper says the man ”fatally shot himself” after 6 PM. KCAL is identifying the location as the Harvey Apartments on 5640 Santa Monica Boulevard between N Wilton and Western Ave. My phone is ringing off the hook right now, with some news sources telling me that the man was a suspect in the murder although the LAT is reporting only that he was “believed to be connected” to the killing.

Thanks for posting this. I thought there was some news brewing in this case.
this is a great article about the man who killed himself…
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/12/suicide-of-suspect-in-ronni-chasen-slaying-caught-on-tape.html
So he was an idiot who was hired for 10K?
Wow. This is no doubt being written into screenplay format as we speak, for release by 2013. Only in Hollywood, right? But anyway, that really is crazy stuff. And again, my thoughts go out to Chasen’s family, friends, and colleagues during all this insanity and horrible times. God rest her soul…
I’m sure it will be on a Law & Order episode soon.
Why do you think they’re on hiatus until January?! Don’t think it’s because of the holidays, they gotta get that Emmy-stealing episode ready for the new year.
Law and Order Los Angeles has no clue what stories to tell. That said, I am shocked that this appears to be a targeted killing. It is so very sad that some people resort to murder in order to get ahead.
If he’s connected in any way, may he rot in hell
I’ll kick off speculation by saying I bet the “client” just offed himself, not the shooter.
THAT’S usually the case, isn’t it? Odd that a hit man would take his life BUT then again, it’s unknown as of today whether or not this guy actually killed Ms. Chasen.
If these art-fraud stories are true, and really, who of us knows yet, “Harold” could have been the guy behind it all…big time art frauders are never seen by their “clients”, deal only in other communications. He and Ms. Chasen could have been in contact, in some deal that she chose to bail on … In that case, perhaps he was the killer and the big guy. It’s all speculative. There is a report out this evening that police know who’s behind it…that’s it’s a biz deal gone bad. I believe this will be solved and my heart goes out to her family and friends.
Somebody blew this.
It’s not over…
This whole thing is tragic. My condolences to her family. Something feels off about this entire investigation.
Where is Ronnie’s damned MINORITY REPORT?
I’m TRIPPING – I was up on my roof smoking some herb and saw what looked like police UFOs hovering – not swooping around like helicopters, just forming a ring over a bldg somewhere near Western. It was just helicopters, though. This is HARDCORE Hollywood mystery, Black Dahlia status.
Something fuckec up is going on. Cold case for the cops. This guy may have been connected to the killings, but i bet this shit runs way deeper. Did Ms. Chasen live a double life?
It all depends on how you define “double life.” She was wealthy,
that’s enough reason for some lunk to want to kill her. It doesn’t take a lot for unstable people to cross the line. And, just because this guy took his life, it doesn’t mean the case is closed. Hardly…it will be solved.
wow, that was a great report by Ms Weiner…
I hate it when scumbags like this refuse to be taken in alive. A couple of kicks to the head while lying on the ground as he was being forced to explain to us why he would commit such an heinous act would’ve sufficed.
Fucking coward.

Coat
Naw, you don’t want that because then we pay for his 3 hots and a cot for the second half of his life to the tune of $50,000. Not that I believe this guy really did it… But police needed a corpse and QUICK! From what I heard from a policeman’s relative was that Roni got involved in something and refused to go along with it in the end… Has to do with Art Fraud Div of Police. Someone wanted her to have some clients of hers accept some painting or art and sell them as if they’d owned them a while, to lend the bogus or stolen works more credibility… When Robert Wagner or some celeb decides to sell a piece, it’s less likely to fall under scrutiny and it adds to the provenance…
Heard Roni refused to play ball and certain things spiraled downards from there, but hey what do I know… I’m the guy who believed the bogus tales she inserted as newsworthy and legit re those very same clients!
C’est La Vie and what goes around tends to come around… What we really all want to know is the WHY and now — oh so conveniently, no? — we will never get to know… Unless it appears sometime real soon on WikiLeaks!!
Yup, all the makings of bogus-mythology-Hollywood-lore stew are congealing, folks!
Big money, big players and big cover-ups in art scams. If this is true, this is could spiral into a very tragic, complex and interesting story.
and in related news, James Ellroy just fixed himself a Dagwood and is dusting off his typewriter.
Unbelievable…
This keeps getting more and more bizarre…
Crazy! Honestly, who would do such a thing? I don’t know the lady, but judging by all the comments from the previous article, she was a good person.
anyway, I hope this gets resolved soon.
Liftetime movie about Chasen’s death and the bizarre twists and turns thereafter in 3, 2, 1…
RIP Ronni Chasen
As someone who knew and cared about Ronni, a wealth of emotions are stirring within me. A sense of comfort that the BHPD have obviously been diligently working the case and making headway despite media distraction. And a sense of renewed frustration that a key person who may have been able to offer some answers (and some closure) to this tragedy has taken the Coward’s Exit.
Cover-up!! Too convenient that he off-ed himself!! WAKE UP!!!
I agree. Esp if it has ties to the Art Fraud Div of the LAPD. They need a fall guy as they’re not taking down the force.
My condolences to you….I did not know Ms. Chasen but I have to state, this has affected me deeply, as if I did know her. To be minding your own business, driving home, doing what one does, and have it end suddenly is a lot to take. I’m sorry for your loss.
It’s a set back, but I want to give a kudos to the cops in this case. They are under tremendous pressure, getting all kinds of criticism, yet they are managing to investigate w/o leaks coming out all over the place screwing things up. That is a rare and difficult thing in this town. Credit where it’s due-we need to give them time to do the job without so much second guessing. All that matters is that the get to the bottom of this and get those responsible the right way so these bastards pay for what they did.
This is my guess.
(1) In the Hollywood area, that specific area is probably the worst of the worst in terms of crime, 18th street – MS-13 gang mostly, but I just don’t see a gang banger type eating a bullet when the cop’s show up. They’re way too macho for that. Going to jail for those guys isn’t the end of the world for them like it is for us.
(2) I know it seems obvious, but it sounds like we’re dealing with a very mentally unstable suspect. That kind of immediate reaction to cops showing up is just weird. If it was just the trigger guy, he’d either lawyer up and/or start singing like a canary to get time off his sentence.
(3) The shooter(s) aim was really really good. All but the most well-trained shooters, with their adrenaline flowing, will spray bullets all over the place at any range with a handgun. This shooting sounds thought out, planned, not spur of the moment.
Long story short. I think he knew her at some point, had a breakdown of some sort, and fixated on her. It’s not very Law and Orderly, but most murders aren’t. They’re senseless acts carried out by people not in their right minds.
@johnsamo
Excellent analysis and theory.
In many reports, the police insist this murder is not gang related.
That part of Hollywood isn’t great but it’s FAR from as bad as you are saying it is.
I figured this was a hit/personal. And it’s probably motivated by financial reasons. Ghastly.
I’m also impressed with the police investigative work on this, considering the paltry evidence. It’s entirely possible this shooting will still lead to uncovering the truth. If this suspect is connected, what’s especially striking is the contrast between where he was found and where the victim lived. These two worlds just don’t meet unless there’s a third party involved. A tragedy any way you look at it, though.
Kudos to the cops. They’ve obviously been on this case (both BHPD and LAPD) and I’m guessing we haven’t heard the last about it yet.
Everyone loves to blast the cops – especially, ironically, citizens in So Cal and Hollywood in particular. I’m a industry professional who is as bleeding heart liberal as they come – but, I have a law and order streak that recognizes that yeah, there’s always bad apples within any police force (as with any other walk of life) but overall, these men and women are there working for us, and are predominate within the force to right these wrongs.
And yes, I have mixed feelings making that statement when there are unsolved murders and brutality going on every day in the inner cities of L.A. – but we need to also recognize the socio-political reasons why there isn’t equivalent awareness for that, which are many, and address that from the top down.
In the meantime, the good cops are doing their jobs and should be applauded for that.
And for all my right and left wing brethren equally, where would be without law enforcement? Yeah, anarchy, you idiots. It’s why we call it society.
Not to be too conspiratorial but is the police closing in on a prime suspect in a quicker-than-the-second-act-of-an-episode-of-Law & Order – two weeks indicative of the victim’s status as an “upstanding citizen” i.e. white and wealthy or is there a greater likelihood that this is some random stooge who’s a good enough fit for the crime?
The forensic evidence suggests a trained shooter who was able to approach Chasen’s vehicle without arousing suspicion – not some jittery ex-con who if he lived in Harvey Apts wouldn’t normally be allowed past BH city limits much less get within spitting distance of some random real housewife at one in the morning on Sunset Blvd. That suggests to me someone she knew at least casually. And the “he bragged about his gun” and “he’ll die before going back to jail” quotes are certainly convenient.
Let’s speculate some more.
Someone who kills themselves to avoid further questions (not arrests), has a story to tell. I doubt that they were “the killer”.
A) whoever killed her was a professional
b) whoever killed her didn’t leave the country right away
He was carrying a gun when the cops arrived, so it would seem that he was planning to pop himself like that if the authorities closed in on him.
My guess is that dead man was the trigger man, that it wasn’t a professional hit, and that he was just some guy with a grudge (stemming from who knows what) who couldn’t deal with being caught.
He couldn’t have been the shooter. He missed himself the first time.
What makes you think that the ‘dead guy’ wasn’t the professional hit man? The only thing that makes a hit “professional” is getting paid to do it. I’m not saying he was the shooter, but any seedy-apartment dweller can be a hit man, a professional hit man, if he’s taking money to do the job.
And here I thought Randy Quaid was fucking nuts. The more stories like this unfold, the more I begin to think he’s right that there are “Star Whackers” out there. Wait a minute, he still might be nuts; he hasn’t been a “star” since “Independence Day”.
conspiracy buffs will have a field day with this.
Having watched “The Shield,” I feel suspicions will go in all directions
If he was connected, why was he still in town two weeks later?
because he was some TRULY dumbass hit man who hadn’t been paid yet and couldn’t afford to leave.
