EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has acquired the rights to the British comedy show RentaGhost and will develop it into a Beetlejuice-style afterlife feature comedy vehicle for Russell Brand. He’ll play Fred Mumford, a recently deceased guy determined to be more productive as a corpse than he was during his life as a slacker. He attempts to set himself up in a business with a couple of other ghouls, starting a temp agency for the dead. Mumford and cohorts rent out ghouls and ghosts to the living, until things go awry. The original series, created by Bob Block, ran on BBC1 from 1976-1984. Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick will produce with BermanBraun’s Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. Brand will be executive producer. They’re going right out to writers. BB’s Andrew Mittman brought in the project.

This guy has to be the joke of the industry…and berman/braun running second in a desperate attempt to get SOMETHING on the air to keep their company going…that’s the word in the industry.,.,. What a bunch of crap.
Enough with this guy.
Thank you.
Can not stand this talentless jackoff. Will people please stop casting this moron.
If the book “Fool” by Christopher Moore is ever made onto a film, Russell simply MUST play the lead. It’s perfect for him. And I mean that in the most complimentary way. I had the pleasure of working with him, and he is really a lovely person.
Sounds fun. Love Brand. GREEK was underrated.
Grew up in Ireland watching this show on BBC in late 70′s early 80′s, its stretching truth to call it a comedy show. It was a desperately unfunny kids TV show, which even then was one of the worst things on television. Terrible acting, wobbly sets, incredibly cheap looking effects. Imagine “Bewitched” if it was shot on a budget of less than $500 an episode, using Marty McFly’s camcorder.
This will kill his career.
This could actually be kind of funny. Sounds like good ensemble potential too.
I’ll admit, his interview skills are ok but as far as him as a comedian, he is very unfunny.
He looks spooky so this should be right up his street.
I can’t stand him he’s obnoxious and repellent. Everything about him makes me want to run and hide under my bed. There’s something so off-putting about this guy. Dudley Moore was charming and instantly likable. Russell Brand is the complete opposite. He’s a smarmy jerk in real life and all his characters are the same. But don’t tell anyone because he’s clearly a bankable movie star now. He should be cast as Medusa in the Clash of the Titans sequel.
Guess he’s going to run through all the remakes then. The fact he’s remade “Arthur” is sacrilegious in my house. Absurd. He needs to stopped.
How dare Hollywood defile yet another childhood memory! That said, Brand would be more suited for playing the jester character, Timothy Claypole.
yeah – when i first heard about it i assumed it was timothy claypole that he’d play.
i like russel brand. and i did like rentaghost (even though i knew even at the time it was sort of terrible). i can’t imagine it working if it’s too americanised though.
the guy that made rentaghost also made another show “galloping galaxies” which i used to love, but was nowhere near as successfull
How long until Universal buy “Grange Hill” for Brad & Angelina?
How will Jim Cameron be able to resist “Blue Peter” in 3D?
Somewhere right now Sorkin is pitching “John Craven’s Newsround”
My sixth sense tells me that somewhere a writer’s script was stolen and probably though a brauny connection to Yahoo. Coldman strikes again and buys more energy to thawout the frozen cow’s carcass.
Ersatz Israel is being built one stolen script at a time in a secret war. Shh, it’s a secret. Don’t tell anyone.
I think this Brand has lost its cachet.
While my instinct is to hate the idea, it could just about work. Not sure about Brand playing Fred Mumford, mind. He’d be better as Claypole.
Why ?
There are many better candidates out there, working on children’s programming would have been a good start for the talent scout looking to bring the dead back from the brink, and yet they securely nail the lid down with Brand.
Why ?
Fuck you people. Russell Brand is genius and presumably you’re too fucking stupid to understand his humor. Not to mention, the man has a brilliant grasp of the English language. Try giving Booky Wook or Booky Wook 2 a read.
The whole idea of making a Rentaghost film is hilarious. I wonder if someone has hit on this specifically in the hopes of killing Brand’s career.
The reviews on the BBC’s own site say it all really… http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/classic/rentaghost/reviews.shtml
Saw the play in London a couple of years ago that was very successful. The chap who owns the film rights is Patrick Pigeon of Pigeon Entertainment in Hollywood
You were obviously an adult when you watched this because as a kid I thought it was brilliant!
People seem bemused that this was made *35* years ago (all tastes in TV and comedy move on) as a *children’s series* (where simple plots and cheap sets are the name of the game) and moan it had silly plots and wobbly sets. Yes it had both (and later series were *too* silly), but it had a great sense of fun that today’s kids shows just can’t capture (‘My Parents Are Aliens’, at it’s peak, is the only thing that has come close IMO). Guess you “had to be there”.
Not a fan of Brand, but surely he’d be better playing Mr. Claypole? I dunno, that was just my first reaction.
