UPDATE: Over the years I knew and interviewed Phil Gersh, the late founder of The Gersh Agency and long the dean of Hollywood agents, and he was a model of integrity even in the cutthroat business of Hollywood talent and literary representation. Because of this, reps at other agents long admired him. However, in my opinion, the bloodlines at The Gersh Agency have now thinned to the point where the only reason that certain members of the Gersh family are still running their second-tier agency is because they also belong to the lucky sperm club. On Monday, Deadline had solid information that the Gersh Agency was buying the small motion picture lit agency Hohman Maybank Lieb. We went to Gersh to confirm, on or off the record, and their flack assured us on the phone and by email, “Nothing happening”. That was a lie when a “No Comment” would have sufficed. I’m now told by insiders, principals at Gersh and Hohman Maybank Lieb that day secretly wrote up the press release about the acquisition and held it until today when it was released right after we scooped the story. This afternoon, the flack as well as Bob and David Gersh have made all sorts of excuses to Deadline, including that there had been a “misunderstanding” between agency and flack, and/or between flack and Deadline. But in Hollywood where reps conclude mega-deals based on just a handshake, what’s to misunderstand that The Gersh Agency isn’t run by Phil anymore?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

To be fair to Gersh, I doubt they were lying. More realistically, they haven’t got a clue what they are doing on a day to day basis. Oh wait, is that more fair or less fair. Either way, it’s true.
Gersh is the new crocs. Nobody would be caught dead wearing them.
As an independent producer, my dealings with the Gersh Agency, have been stellar. David is an absolute gentleman, and the rest of the staff is professional, and quite frankly exude a friendly, refreshing atmosphere. Many of today’s top talent enjoys excellent representation at this fine company, which does indeed, exude the fine traditions of Phil. The other agencies, can still look to the Gersh Agency for an example of a well run, respected company.
I stumbled across this post from 2010 and felt compelled to respond, even if it isn’t read. I have known the Gersh family a long time, and admire them immensely. My experience with David, especially, has been pleasant, professional, forthright and fair. If he, or his agency were under an NDA, or simply unwilling to disclose a pending business transaction, their non-denial, denial was appropriate. A comment such as “no comment” is left-handed confirmation, which they were obviously uncomfortable with, at the time. The Gersh family works hard for their clients and provides them with good service. I would strongly recommend them to anyone considering representation.
When you hit the bullseye it is so right on Nikki. It is truly sad what is going over there, and if Phil were alive, he would be mortified of what is occurring in those halls, or how agents are treated, or the legal fights with far too many ex-agents to be named. Phil was one who helped a competitor, and gave a hand to agents who succeeded and were in trouble. Scratch the surface, look at the departures and look at the fights behind the scenes and its a sad state of affairs.
Bravo Nikki for finally saying what so many have been whispering…Bravo
i feel that all the agencies are junior league versions of their former incarnations.
Gersh is the Radio Shack of agencies. When you hear the name you think “how are they still in business?”
You don’t think that if you pay any attention to the TV talent business.
Gersh isn’t classless; they’re just inept, and out of the loop. And classless…
Gersh is only mostly useless… They have a great TV department!
Gersh is a mess. There agents are lower tier casting agents not talent agents. Instead of trying to sign new people and break new talent they follow. I give them three more years until they sell.
You heard it hear first.
He meant “Their” and “here”. Just another hollywood writer I suppose.
No disrespect by their Comedy department is considered the worst in the business and I am a client.
I’m an Indie agent doing biz with all the agencies, comedy and music. In all honesty I have found working with Sara Sheragy and TJ in the comedy department at Gersh a pleasure. I mostly book their lower tier comics and they truly try to get the deal done and work hard to get me accurate info in a timely fashion. I stay out of the politics so I really don’t know that much about the company they work for.
If you are really a client and you feel this way… why are you still with them?
So typical of Gersh. They lie.
finally – nikki giving the gersh truth – not the gersh version of the truth! Brava!
Sometimes Agencies try to control the press. What I have learned is that you Nikki are always on top of everything! It is not possible to keep anything from you. However, you knew, they knew and now we know you knew. So Bob, Devra and Bayard are great Agents and this is a smart move for all. I have know them, shared clients with them and Gersh. This is a good thing. So other than the fact they tried to keep a secret and you scooped them. Congratulations to all.
Megan Fox is repped by Gersh. Need I say more? They have no major clients left whatsoever.
The list is this:
CAA
WME
ICM
UTA
Gersh?
Megan Fox is repped by ICM.
Megan Fox is at ICM, she left with Lorrie Bartlett and Chuck James
Didn’t know Phil Gersh but once tried to negotiate with his idiot offspring. I dread it when I want to hire one of their clients and won’t if I can help it. They are dishonest.
Half of Gersh’s talent signings and TV packaging recently came from Andy Cohen.
Gersh kills actors careers. Total lumps, no action. Take 10% that they never work for. Sit and collect money. Buy art for their collections. That gets em energized. Comparatively.
Y congratulations Nikki…There was no readon to lie to you or anyone…Like we wouldn’t find out??? Yes…you’re very good at honesty. Thank you
WOW! Way to go Miller PR. Isn’t it the job of a PR company to make their client look better not worse?
How about this, Pay me the 20-30k a month your most likely paying them and ill kick you in the sperm bank and get it over with faster. Because that’s essentially what Miller PR just did to you and completely erased the good news announcement of acquiring a great Boutique Lit Agency to halt their recent slide and climb the mountain again.
Stop the bleeding David and Bob. Next time Nikke calls “asks” you to do something I’d pay attention.
I appreciate you pointing out the scoop and the ineptitude of Miller PR, but let me just say to everyone who’s bashing and pissing on the mediocrity of the agency that when the Gersh level agencies are fully gone and absorbed, it will be a world of 3.5 agency’s: CAA, WME, ICM and UTA. There will be no one whatsoever to start anyone’s career, even if they ultimately mess it up. It will be as if the minor leagues no longer existed and young players had to learn at the major league level a scenario in which many will fall through the cracks and the possibility of finding a gem becomes less and less because the gem while still so raw will have no time to mature. Competition folks, even if the playing field is slanted, is what we benefit from. Not being told by a major agency that you can’t even inquire about a client because they’re either managing the agenda so intensely or they have a bone to pick with the company you might be working for. It’s an even uglier future without these ugly ducklings. And by the way, MHL is going to class up the joint. Let’s just hope they’re allowed to.
David Gersh should resign. Time for a change David… Now would be good.
Oh yeah, I’d rather be at CAA, which is in every business BUT repping talent, or WME, which is about as effective and free of infighting as the Obama White House, or UTA, which skates on its handful of big names, or ICM, which treats its writers as desperate feeder for its actors, its actors as bait for directors, and its directors as franchise mules …
Gersh is the only place in town that treats its clients like an old school agency, but has the clout to reach anyone. And Steve Gersh, the next generation, is hard-working and smart as hell, with a great instinct for the biz. While the others chase the latest B.S. fad, Gersh keeps chugging along, doing things the right way.
Haha. Steve Gersh is the next generation. HAHAHAHAHA. Deal with him, then come back to me. He’s a dick, and honestly, not that bright.
Spoken like a true Steve Gersh. Next time restrain your narcissism slightly to mid level sycophant and we’ll at least assume you merely work for him.
Sorry…Phil at one point absolutely lied to me and I never forgot it. Wish I felt the same way you do about him. But man…what an art collection he had.
We unfortunately NEED Gersh.
What…you want more power to go to the jerks at WME or CAA?
Hollywood Studio Executives – all of them – need to truly take a step back and ask, ‘DO WE REALLY NEED TO DEAL WITH AGENTS?”
Why not start a division that finds the scripts YOURSELVES? Why rely on these talentless agents to do your work?
This is why movies and TV today are so pitiful.
I remember when Gersh was a huge star maker for young up-and-comers. They rep’d 90% of The WB’s young up-and-comers when it had all those “hot” 18-25 shows 10 years ago. Seems like Innovative has more or less dethroned them of that title in this new era.
I must say that I have been in business with the Gersh talent and comedy departments for years and all I have to say is they are a great company to work with. I also feel that Phil is still alive and well. Seems like someone did not want to wear letting the news out early or maybe they may have protecting an announcement so what. It is their business and they can make their announcements as they feel it appropriate. Everyone should relax and take a pill. Gersh is GREAT! And that is based on my experience.
I have gotten to know many agents in town & know most of the agents working at Gersh and must say that the agents that work at Gersh Agency are very down to earth proffesionals that do good work.
Other major agency are more interested in making money and getting huge million dollar deals where Gersh Agency focuses on presenting oppertunity´s for their Talents to work on great written script/film projects. If you´d take a closer look at the talent they represent like for example Catherine Keener or the many international European talents they as well represent than you will see that their way of doing buissness is wise because look at how many well paid A-list actors are at major agency and make a few good deals but are within a few years off the table & out off work.
Gersh is my opinion the kind of loyal agency that will not drop their clients just because they don´t bring in the million dollar deals. Gersh support their talents and helps them grow as artist and that is a way better agency than one that puts you under pressure to continue bringing in the million dollar deals for every project.
There are two kind of people working on hollywood – 1. that is only interested in maiking quick million dollar deals & fame and the 2. that is interested in making great movies that people will remember in 10 or 20 years. Gersh Agency belongs to those people that are interested in supporting their artist in growing and working on great written scripts.
