EXCLUSIVE: Starz has made a 10-episode commitment to Magic City, a period drama series that captures the collision of mobsters, politicians and entertainers at a posh Miami hotel just as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba and shuts down Havana as a gambling haven. Mitch Glazer created the series and has written the first three episodes — he’ll write five more — of a series that will start production early next year in Miami and will air on Starz in 2012. It’s being produced by Media Talent Group, whose CEO, Geyer Kosinski will be executive producer with Glazer and Tony To. The subject matter is a tightrope in dealing with the mob, his own complicated family, racial tensions and a city that is about to blow up as a destination for decadence. “Mitch has created a world populated with unforgettable characters and with a big dynamic story,” said Starz president/CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement. “The talented creative team that has come together for Magic City will ensure a show that we think audiences won’t want to miss.” Glazer based the series on his own recollection of growing up in Miami. “I was born and raised in Miami Beach, grew up in those swank hotel lobbies,” Glazer said. “I love that world and those stories. Miami in the early ‘60s was a tropical crossroads, America’s Casablanca. The Rat Pack, CIA, the mob, JFK and anti-Castro warriors, all hanging out in the same Collins Avenue nightclub.” Starz is putting together other series, but Magic City certainly harkens back to that Sopranos-style fare that was Albrecht’s trademark at HBO.

sounds interesting and will invite inevitable comparisons to The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. It all comes down to casting, maybe even more so than writing. Michael Pitt and Steve Buscemi not so much.
Sounds like the Eden Roc – I met Frank Sinatra there at the time with Leo Durocher and have their autographs on an Eden Roc napkin to prove it… Miami was at its best..
could be…OR could be The Fountainbleau Hotel? It’s said that Frank kept a suite there. In any case this is a GREAT idea for a show. Telling the story of Miami in it’s heyday is like combining the Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and Madmen! Can’t wait!
Miami in the 60s does sound fun– Mad Men meets Boardwalk Empire, but it’s tiring to see so much copycatting going on. There must be a dozen Mob shows in development and two dozen vampire/zombie shows. The iirony is it’s supposed to be a creative business.
Is Lionsgate producing this?
Surfside 6?
Starz! is starting to build up a nice line-up of series.
I’m already hooked on Spartacus, I’m anticipating Camelot, I’m waiting on the new Torchwood, I don’t that much about Noir, but I’ll give it a shot and now I’m interested in this.
“It’s Madmen…only in Miami…with the mob…and Sinatra…and JFK…and did we mention it’s like Madmen?…We’d also be willing to make it like Glee.”
Sounds like it could be cool, especially in the same way that Madmen can include present-day knowledge of historical outcomes into the plotlines.
And anyway, I still miss “Surfside 6″.
Decent script. Think he developed it at CBS a few years ago. That’s Albrecht for you. Always going back to his friends (Tony T).
Sounds like a cool project? Why is it on Starz?
I think a lot of creators are attracted to Starz! because it’s an up and coming network and it has no restrictions on what you can put in your show.
There is absolutely no interference from the network, unlike HBO or Showtime. It’s starting to become the place to go if you want to create an adult drama.
If you remember, HBO passed on the Preacher series because it’s material was too explicit for them. They wouldn’t have that problem at Starz!
Awesome to see a program that hearkens back to the Miami Beach glamor of the 50′s and 60′s. My grandfather owned a few hotels in Miami Beach back then, well before I was born. Looking forward to this series.
American Tabloid anyone?
Seriously, if Preacher movie won’t make it, Albrecht should think about adapting it as a series. There’s alot of good comics to adapt.
Excellent subject matter for a period series. Swinging Sixties in Miami Beach – when the Boom turned to Bust.
Miami Beach in the 60s…much more interesting than the Beach in the 80s a la Miami Vice. Great ingredients for a terrific series. Glazer has the talent and the experience to draw on. I can’t wait for the show.
anyone see passion play?
I lived in Miami Beach in the 60′s. Frank Sinatra did a benefit for my husband, Joseph Nesline, the crime czar of Washington D.C. I entertained all the Mafia Don’s. This sound like my memoirs.
Not when you see the show. Number 1 hoax in hollywood’s involved. It should be a good comedy, similar to Car 54 Where Are You.
begin these shows with ———-WARNING YOUR ABOUT TO WATCH A PIECE OF SHIT>
