After weeks of speculation, Syfy just announced that it won’t renew Stargate Universe for a third season, putting an end (for now) to the long-running Stargate franchise on the network. The upcoming 10 episodes of Stargate Universe‘s second season, which will air in the spring, will be the series’ last. The news follows the recent cancellation of another franchise Syfy series, the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002. Syfy’s slate of returning series includes Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven, which will be joined next year by new series Being Human, which launches on January 17, the recently greenlit series Alphas as well the Battlestar Galactica prequel movie/backdoor pilot Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Stargate Universe has recently averaged a 0.5 in 18-49, below the averages for the Syfy series that have been renewed.

The only decently written, properly acted sci-fi series on SyFy is no more??? It was only beginning to answer a few of my questions. Devastation for Stargate fans everywhere.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
fukn syfy ppl need to get slapped for this, wat the hell! They kept stupid startreck going for FOREVER why cant they keep the SG franchise running!!!!
Consider:
They canceled Atlantis (a well-liked and consistently rated show) and replaced it with SGU.
Canceled.
They canceled BSG (a critically acclaimed show that struggled for ratings) and replaced it with Caprica.
Canceled.
Even when they manage to do something right, they find a way to screw it up.
Actually, BSG wasn’t cancelled, the story was finished. There was no need to continue and drag it out.
bzzt. Halfway through the 4th season, they announced they were going to cancel the planned 5th season and wrap up 30 episodes of story in 10 episodes. Which turned out to be a total abortion.
Syfy gave RDM the option to go 4 or 5 seasons. He chose 4. There was never any 5th season considered to be cancelled.
BSG turned to shit when they decided to make it religious… and uhm… when did that happen? Season 1. I can’t even believe they were able to drag it on for 4 seasons once some retard in the writing scripts decided to turn it religious and I don’t know why everyone else agreed. I still watched and the ending was completely foreseen even though they said the ending will be a complete surprise. It was too obvious. I was so disappointed with BSG and mostly its religious turn. At least some chars from there went on to voice act in Mass Effect 2 which was pretty cool.
Anyway, cancelling SGU was a major retarded move since it was a vastly fresh and new point of view series, world-wide. Fail.
I can’t agree more. They seem to be determined to take decently paced shows with mildly interesting characters and replace them with torpid, overwritten schlepp-fests acted by two-bit Hamlet wannabees. Caprica was slow and the character development was glacial to nonexistent (You miss your daughter. We GET IT. Move the f*ck ON.) SGU was just as bad.
The one charitable thing I can say about both of these “highbrow” soporifics is that they are infinitely better than the wrestling programming that’s likely to replace them.
WEWT!!!! were so lucky more wrestling…. FML
For some reason a channel called The “Syfy” channel would cause me to think that it catered to Scifi enthusiasts. But every time I switch to it all I see is a bunch of guys playing grab @$$ in tights. (Well at least the trailer trash gay metal head community of the world is satisfied)
So, GIMMIE MAI SGU RITE MEOAW
So up until the last 3-4 episodes I have a feeling that Syfy had the writers from the Hills writing for SGU. Now I think they took a step up to kids with down syndrome. Which has had a clear improvement upon SGU in the last 3-4 episodes. Considering they’re about to actually fight some Holy $hit…. ALIENS!
You’re Right. The actions of this network remind me of the FOX Network and their “brilliant” decision making. Come on syfy, get it together!
They did not cancel BSG. It ran its course. It was never intended to go on forever. The writers had a conclusion in mind when they began, and they reached it. Very bad analogy.
actually, the producers of BSG decided to end their series, not syfy…and that was definitely the best show on syfy..so I agree, it shouldnt have been cancelled. but yeah, syfy is making some collasally stupid decisions.although battlestar and stargate fans didnt all come running two these two new series, cancelling them altogether and giving nothing in return is absolute bogus. they’re definitely going to lose countless viewers over this.
exactly just look what they did with farscape, if they try this with warehouse 13 i will NEVER watch SyFy again F**K U SYFY
BSG was never cancelled. The writers ended BSG because they felt they were running out of room for episodes (which they were if you didn’t notice). I do feel that this show should have gotten one more season. I’m curious if Stargate will ever have a new show again.
Go further back… They cancelled Farscape. Just five days before filming ended on the season four finale. At least Universe got more warning.
It’s up to the fans now. They’re the only ones that can unite to try to save it. They might do it, they might not.
Shame if they don’t, I was enjoying the ride.
I really liked S.G.A it showed alot of promise
You’re correct, I totally agree with you.
SGU was a really good show. It had the whole freakin Universe to explore. At least they gave some “closure” and the possibility of resurection.
BSG could have continued with both sides restarting on Earth.
Caprica sucked from the get go.
BTW, Science fiction is not horror. Thats what Chiller is for.
No reason to watch SyFi anymore.
I am 68 years old and i have never written to atv station to complain about canceling a program. I am now. SGU is the best sci-fy series on tv. I want SGU back on tv.
I can honestly say i’n sad to see the show go. I’m a huge stargate sg1 fan, my favorite show. Started watching atlantis, but couldn’t stand it after having basically seen each episode in another show, except for the ones revovling around the original series. Then SGU came out. I was blown away and so excited to watch a stargate show almost as good as SG1. And have remained excited and a follower up to 2 weeks ago. Have a friend who watches BSG and is a HUGE fan. Talked about how much I liked SGU and she said it was okay but that i was too much like BSG. The characters all have corelating ones in each show. I was saying, “well at least they’re not stranded on a ship or anything.” Then I watched BSG. I understand the backstories are completely different, but as far as I’m concerned SGU is a Stargate themed BSG. Don’t get me wrong this is amazing as I still love stargate, but I was wondering how much longer it was going to last.
horrible show wasting robert carlyle. we want science fiction not scifi drama.
Really?
You clearly have no concept of science-fiction. When at its best, it is a study of the human condition – ergo, it *is* about drama, intrigue and human relationships (even when said relationships utilise “aliens” as a mirror.
Epic space battles, big ships with big guns may well look good…but at the end of the day, they are simply eye candy.
So you want mindless sci-fi action instead of a more human drama? The point of science fiction is to explore the human experience in the context of fantastic settings, which open up new ideas and concepts. How is that a bad thing?
SG1, SGA, and then a bunch of whiny characters creating a social drama with the sifi element hidden carefully in the background. they took a franchise so captivating, with characters dedicated to the action adventure plot, and turned it into something like real world or the hills. the focus of SGU was on those snotty ego driven characters bickering and having feelings- it was a soap opera. the focus was on all the duplicity, selfishness sheer audacity of these spoiled brats we call the cast of SGU. there was no sifi, there was no technical, it was a bunch of assholes who refused to get along. anyone who loved SG! and SGU couldn’t help but hate SGU. most likely all the mourning SGU supporters were the shallow socialites the show was marketed to, and likely would not care for SG! or SGU if they actually had watched it, which they haven’t. you don’t follow a franchise deep in action adventure fantasy with a drama. SG1 and SGA were people working together for a common goal, SGU was a bunch of people too busy acting childish, selfish; awing us with fax pars, irrational distrust. next time sifi or any network is hard at work trying to mimic another network’s show (ie batterstar g) they should do well not to drag a long time hit franchise to the ground. they did succeed in catering to a wider (read as “another”) audience while gambling away the then existing stargate franchise fanbase
your just people who cant accept change if u were trues fans of the star gate series u would actually love this show or at least say it decent and try to watch it instead of crying And acting self-fish for what u want in the show…..I really like this show…….
aaa, I am very disgusted about this cancelation. I am not however a “socialite” I just love Scifi, and like it or not SGU was a SCIFI show. I felt the stride was just getting started because the trust was finally coming together in the characters. A common goal was being formed and camaraderie was finding a place on the ship. So the core SG fans woould come around to the show if given another chance. Any new show is a gamble for a network, but for SyFy to leave the SG franchise completely is a huge mistake. We can all talk bad about the show if we want but those of us who reallygave them a chance to get it right have been rewarded in the last three or four episodes. The next season, I expect, would have a much better SG1 feel than it has until now. And that is how we all rate a new part of a franchise, by comparing it to the original. Don’t lump all of us fans into this group. MAinly becuase no matter who they marketed to, really it was us SciFi fans who watched not the fans of the Hills or something like that.
See here is an old SG1 Fan, its not surprising that he hates SGU as SGU is a completely different animal than SG1 and SGA.
I really like SGU and would go as far to say that it is one of the best Sifi shows to reach the air.
SG1 and SGA are light hearted/humored, shoot em up type of shows and SGU is a serious sifi drame, its no wonder that fan’s are upset now on both sides. You cannot merge these two beast without a proper bridge!!!
SGU should not have been called SGU. Its name should have been based or referenced too to the movie “Contact” and then include the reference to SGU later. This way the old fans would not be disappointed that there series took a turn about face and a new audience would look to see what this new sifi what was all about, because let’s face it, apart from the gate and a few odd appearances from the old cast this is a completely different show.
I think that not renewing stargate universe sucks ass because stargate and its spin off are fantastic shows, aswell as battlestar galactica 2003, which had ran its course but was s till a fantastic show. All thse shows were fantastic in terms of the script and that they all had characters that we could all relate to and really brilliant storylines I reckon that they could get a s3 out of Stargate univere.
It goes to prove that all a show has to be cancelled by is by the ******* rating not wehtehar anyone actually loves the shows.
and I agree that the syfi channel should be that where all brilliant sci-fi shows should remain becuase people love them and thta they should not be cancelled due to someome who thinks oh ratings have fallen lets design a new show.
I saw it coming, the day i saw the pilot of SGU i knew it wouldnt last long. I didnt like it at all and to be honest as Boonie said earlier it was essentially a giant BSG rip off based in the Stargate Universe.
SG1 was awsome, up until season 9 (the ori stuff just lost me, that and having the actors from Farscape take over just didnt feel right, not that i dont like claudia black or anything). SGA was, in my opinion getting better then SG1, i admit i didnt like the first season of atlantis but after The Siege it just got better and better, by season 4 i was SGA obssesed. I still preffered SG1s characters but the story of SGA was more to my liking.
I hope that they find a way to somehow bring back the good old Stargate we all loved, not this poor imitation. Glad its gone.
having just browsed a few of the comments here I feel that none of you have really any idea what’s going on. some of the people who wrote these comments definitely haven’t watched much of the shows. one cannot spell. one cannot figure out if he/she watched SG! or SG1 when it should be SG-1. I believe you’d find it hard going to find it spelled officially any other way. comparison of the shows is also unlikely to bring much luck from the channel. perhaps if when the shows are canceled the fans should promise to boycott the channel and get online to rack up the numbers and make the promises come true or suggest to the advertisers that their products might be boycotted and publish a list of the products. in the long run it doesn’t matter what the reason for their demise, they have been canceled – handle it! please. incidentally all the shows end, at some point. but on some occasions the fans may change the timing.
i am watching stargate atlantis right now and its like the 20th time i have seen this episode “broken ties”.still like this better than SGU.but do agree its alot like BSG but was kinda getting to the good stuff hopefully.just think the SGU writers spent to much time on making the point they are on a ship and have no clue whats going on.with sg1 and atlantis at least they had the stargate movie then with atlantis everyonehad already had an idea from the conclusion of sg1
\
You are all wrong. This isn’t a rip off of anything. Cause if it was, BSG rips off Star Trek:Voyager. They have the same theme, a group of people stranded in a distant part of the galaxy/universe trying to find/get home. Just the later two were more geared to drama. I love SGU and am sad to see it go. I have been an avid fan of all SG series shows as well as BSG (didn’t like Caprica at all though). Im sure if enough people wrote SyFy they could save it. So please any SG fans that may hate this show, watch the last of the episodes to see if it will grow on you so we can save it.
Nexik3 – Not cancel Star Trek? What “Universe” are you from? Did I not sign a petition back in the 60′s to keep the original ST on the air and then we only managed it for one more year. I do think SyFy needs to get it together……….. wrestling? I have a hard enough time accepting the Horror genre lumped together with science fiction. I feel like it is 25 years ago when I had to slink to what felt like the forgotten corner of the library to find any science fiction books at all and then if it was a series they would have books 2 and 4 and would have to order the others. I was enjoying SGU very much, and plan to let them know how I feel. I encourage everyone to do the same.
I have always wondered how Scifi was going to keep the light on. Most of us who life this type of venue know it is not playing to the masses or it would be on the networks. I grew up watching scifi, but I had to look hard to find things to watch as I grew up. I loved SG1 and I loved the characters. The cast were honorable people looking to do things that helped others and the earth. SGU was a huge disappointment to me because of the useless people. There is no way I would want any of my kids to be like these awful people. Can you imagine, Yes son, I would love for you to be just like Doc on SGU. What on earth were they thinking?
There were a few decent people and I suppose Eli was as close to a decent person as anyone. I thought it reminded me of BSG and I had had my fill of that show too. I liked the feel good show that SG1 turned out to be and both of the first two Stargate shows were that way. Show like Stargate SG1 are a tough act to follow, as it had so many good things about it. It could have gone on for a few more years and still made money for the morons at SCIFI. In any case I was just warming up to SGU because they were starting to address some of the piss poor whining assholes and the stupid soap opera format.
I was hoping they would take all of the characters to therapy and turn them in to loving, caring people who looked to working together without cutting each others necks just to get a larger chunk of TP. I hope this is not the end of the Stargate franchise, but the way that SCIFI does things nothing would surprise me at this point. I just about had a stroke when they put the men in tights on the network. LOL It does show just how much they need money and how far they will lower them selves to get it. If you look back a few years and count how many good shows the SCIFI channel had put an end to way before their time again shows the people who watch the channel are the last people they care about. And the people the SciFi channel are targeting are to stupid or too young to understand a show like Stargate SG1 anyway.
Any time I see the word Frack in place for the word Fu** thirty-five times in a hour they are targeting people who giggle every time they hear a cuss word and the shows content is not really very important to the writers or the producers. To me that is not someone who is trying to put out a good product for people with an IQ of over 60 or have passed puberty. I can only say what I like, and all in all it is just my opinion, however when I like something on TV or at the movies it is morally acceptable to everyone and shows educated people who behave honorably toward each other. These are the type of shows that tend to last for years. Well, I had stood on my soapbox long enough and I need to get some Zs. I hope the Stargate franchise comes back even better and goes back to what made it a good show that people wanted to get home to see every Friday. It was a show where recording it was not good enough, we had to see it in real time because we did not want any spoilers. It is a sad day when we will no longer have Stargate or Startrek to entertain us. For the most part we have had the last twenty years of some pretty good SCIFI. Cheers all!
About fricking time. That show sucked.
Loved all of the Stargates just started watching them on NetFlix boy was i disappointed in the Cancelled seasons of SGU and the short ending of SGA..
Really? So Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven are horribly written? Yes, 2/4 are fluff, but they are fun and tightly written. I didn’t get into Haven much, but Sanctuary is rocking my socks off this season. It has solid, detail-oriented writing and strong acting of multi-dimensional, interesting characters and decent pacing, as well as stellar special effects. All that for about 2/3 the price.
There is no way you could ever compare warehouse 13, Eureka or Sanctuary to Stargate Universe.. I am not saying those are bad shows or they are badly written, but in no way could they compete with the drama and the supreme acting which is delivered in Stargate Universe.
And yes, I like Eureka and Warehouse 13.. but a lot of episodes in between are really crappy. I mean eureka is so inconsistent, it almost needs a diarrhea prescription.
I really cant understand why they would cancel Stargate Universe…
No they didn’t cancel SGU because it was crap. That’s completely wrong, it was the amount of money invested for money returned, it’s the advertising. That’s all it was. They got greedy.
Please do your research before you start spreading your hate.

Actually, those shows ARE bad. Stargate Universe was smart, serious, and interesting.
Warehouse 13 and Haven and Sanctuary? Good lord, it’s pure waste. Silly plots, bad acting, zero logic. Just godawful.
Then again, Black Eyed Peas sell more albums than most other artists, so there’s no accounting for taste among the masses.
I disagree…I never developed any attachment to any of the characters in Stargate Universe. All the insightful, drama ridden plots don’t mean anything if you don’t care about the characters.
Agreed. The first ever sci-fi show that actually cared about “truth”.
Not unexpected, but very, very sad to see it go.
Rounded characters, great writing, great acting, absolutely fantastic camerawork, VFX that looked real and subtly applied to enhance the story.
The most complete show in the sci-fi genre ever produced, it could have stood up to any show HBO or AMC for quality. And yet… most of the sci-fi fan-boys hated it.
I guess the fanboys think it’s better to have shallow 2d characters, overlit phoned-in camerawork, melodramatic acting, VFX that look like crayon, and the word “honor” or “duty” on every page of the script, like every other syfy show that they watch in larger numbers.
SGU producers, cast and crew — thank you! You created art. You should be extremely proud of your work. Even though it was unjustly unappreciated by the syfy audience. I guess it was over their heads…
Actually, these scifi fan boys dont want that at all. Want they want is NO stargate franchise PERIOD. sad day in SG news. That show was awesome. The tone, the actors, and the story. This completely blows. I don’t blame the network, i blame those particular so-called fans.
Actually, all that I as a fan boy wanted to see was something else than repetitive internal power struggles. Like character development. Which I didn’t. Now mind you, while I had to force myself to keep watching, I only stopped somewhere in the second season. So don’t blame me for the ratings.
You understand that unless you are part of the ratings survey sample, your watching or not watching the show does not affect the rating at all whatsoever.
Actually, I blame the USA’s outdated TV rating system. For example, it doesn’t count people that watch SGU through DVR.
I was Wondering about that to if they count people who watch it on DVR since I’m one of those people who Record it instead of watching it when it comes on tv
I AM A FAN of Stargate movies (SGU, SGA, and SG1). SGU power struggles ARE ALSO IN SG1 and SGA, same thing is HERE ON THIS PLANET, thing called HUMAN CONDITION. Sad to cancellation of this great movie.
), blame this thing: MONEY.
“So don’t blame me for the ratings.”

They shouldn’t count DVR viewers for ratings purposes. It’s all about advertising revenue. DVR viewers do not watch the advertisements, leading to no sales for the advertisers. The cancellation was just due to not enough people watching the show. It simple economics. It doesn’t matter how good the show is, if people don’t watch it, the advertisers feel it is not a good investment of their money, especially in this economy.
Actually, I love all the other stargates(sg1, atlantis) but universe paled in comparison. It was not a stargate show. They didn’t use the star gate enough – they had many characters that were under used and pointless human on human whining. When you hate all the characters – that’s a bad sign. With sg1 and atlantis I loved ALL the characters(well season 9 and 10 of sg1 flailed a bit but were still better then universe). I’m glad to see it go! WE stopped watching after one Season, it was so bad – we compared it to Lost(at it’s worst) and heros(at it’s worst)
I believe the reason you and others like you don’t like SGU is that the show was created for the more educated people. If you did not understand the story it was because you lacked the intelligence to comperhend were it all was leading to. It is a very well written show, with great actors.
If you were smart enough to understand the show, you will know that comprehend is spelt like this bum!!!!
If my BA from a prestigious University and my membership in Phi Beta Kappa don’t indicate that I have ample education, then I don’t know what would. And yet I didn’t care a thing for SGU….
Educated people aren’t watching the SciFi channel, they are sipping latte’s at their book discussions or listening to podcasts of Dianne Rhem.
Well written? Uh, no. Not even close. A good writer would draw the viewer in, get you curious about the people in it, make you ask “oh wow, what happens next?”, and so on.
Universe has none of this. Nothing to draw you in (Destiny’s deep and mysterious mission is to track down some signal? After a season and a half that’s the best they could come up with?), no characters worth caring about (it’s one thing to portray your characters as flawed, but quite another to do it to the point where you couldn’t care less if the whole lot of them were blown out the nearest airlock), and nothing of significance ever happens (left Rush behind? No sweat, he’s back already. Finally found the bridge? Well we can’t have anything too exciting in this show, let’s make it as dull as the rest of the ship. Rush already knew where it was? Eh whatever, let’s not bother going anywhere with that).
Meh.
Actually all of these shows were created for intelligent people who use their brains for more than just mindless drivel. SG1, SGA, SGU, BSG, Farscape, Star Trek (all series), LOST all created by highly intelligent people and massacred by the MORONS in power. Let’s end the stupidity and get some smart people in power!
“Created for intelligent people”?? I’d say created for housewives to have something to watch after their soap operas went off or when another of their mindless, idiotic, backstabbing reality TV shows weren’t on. Just because Sci-Fi fans (I mean the genre, not your crummy channel ) want to see some SCIENCE FICTION, not wrestling, or a cast of people who are all about fighting more with each other than any alien threat. Did the Colonel sleep with the medic and get her pregnant? Did the other colonel sleep with his wife? Will Eli’s mom die of aids and loneliness because she has no life without her genius son? Did the medics baby REALLY DIE or is it being kept alive by the aliens for some experiment? I COULD CARE LESS!!! The writers for this show are the worst I’ve ever seen. I’ve been subjected to so much mindless drivel from them due to me hoping there would be a gleam of something from the Stargate Series here that I’m actually glad it got canceled!!
I guess there’s no room for science fiction on the sci-fi channel!
BTW, I FRIKKIN HATE the actors. That’s not yer fault, actors, you can blame that on your poor excuses for writers. You make them all a bunch of underhanded, power grubbing, backstabbing, wife swapping, crap-talking jackasses that nobody wants to watch them except idiots that somehow have watched so much daytime soap operas and reality tv shows, and perhaps your wrestling, that they seem to think this is what passes for “serious drama”. And next time you IDIOT writers write for military people like the colonel and his crew, PLEASE get an advisor or someone who has a CLUE how to write about military. I’ve never seen a first-sargeant that young, or that liked to disobey his superiors that much, or talk back to officers like that, or punch anything that bothered him. WTF is that about? People like that don’t make it to that high of a rank. Period. Learn about chain of command. Learn about discipline. Then learn about how to write science fiction. I certainly don’t mind some interaction between characters. And I think it’s important to flesh them out, so to speak. The audience enjoys learning about what makes their characters tick, why they keep doing what it is they do, interacting with other characters that they like. Keyword LIKE. You have one person that people can stand, that’s Eli. I wanted to see him hook up with the cute little redhead in the leather. Especially after the tramp chloe has yanked his chain for a whole season. But no, it was better to have her murdered. I’m really hoping you guys got fired, but the sci-fi network guys will prolly just put you back to work writing the dialogue for the latest “Battle of the Giant “
Hey DAVE I’m a Sci Fi fan boy and I loved that show MORON!
and if anybody’s surprised that syfy canceled a show obviosly dont watch syfy much because that’s all that crap channel does anymore is cancel shows! it’s the damn texters and morons that they cater to now that keep good shows off syfy, no instead we get ghost hunters josh gates or whatever that dumb guys name is fact or fiction and shartopus! Sci Fi died way back when with the first group that bought the channel then they sold it to NBC and now NBC is being bought! it’s all over now!
I totaly agree with Jimmy, when the new boardroom JACKwads bought Sci-Fi they didnt waste much time flushing the whole Sci-Fi idea down the toilet. They went green (and what a SCAM that is!!!!) and changed the name that “HAD” a huge worldwide following. Then bring on a bunch of CRAP shows that have nothing at all to do with sci-fi. I mean come on ghost hunter it should be called CRAP hunter, fact or fiction WTH is this? Then to put the cherry on the TURD heap, they bring on wrestling???? WTH is up with that, OH yeah wrestling is so sci-fi. Give me a F’n break, Im not sure what JACKWAD is running the new sci-fi (NO I will NEVER call it the changed name) channel, but who ever it is needs to be taken up to the space station and pused out an airlock!!!!
It is a channel that has total disdain for it’s fans…The most it had to offer of late was SGU….At it’s best starting with the brilliant Farscape…Canceled… miraculously it let BSG play out to it’s natural end. I guess it should not be a surprise at all…more money to make the worst made for tv movies ever, not even bad enough to be good. Ahhh I’m done with this network …It is all Shite…
So, let go a good movie (SGU)???? Donate 1 €, or 1$ or another currency, to make a good movie…..
@Dave:
What show were you watching?
Thank you for the perfect comment on the SGU cancellation. The bit about fanboys was brilliant. This was a show that raised the bar for production, writing and acting. I wonder sometimes whether it’s even worth investing time and emotional energy into these shows when the majority of the television audience salivate over the shallow nonsense that seems to prevail and thrive on SyFy.
Let me guess you didn’t like SG1 or Atlantis?
There is nothing wrong with liking the adventuring type shows that sg1 offered. I just wish they had created a new series with the universe idea instead of taking the stargate name and most likely dooming the franchise.
This is pretty bad news for sci fi (NOT syfy <– that was a retarded idea). Even though SGU wasn't technically hard scifi, is was as close as we've had currently. At least it had frakin space ships!
At least they should film a final episode with an ending or something like that for the series – i am just curios where they wanted to go with the Destiny’s mission. They should not let this en abruptly – for the real fans!
Considering they wrapped in November, unlikely that will happen
I’m very disappointed as the series was really getting interesting and IMHO was well acted. I never cared for the time slot though and wonder what impact that may have played on the ratings???
SyFy doesn’t even pretend to be about Sci-Fi any more. Werewolves, Vampires, ghosts, the WWE, horror movies – they’re just trying anything to make a paycheck. Having a vision for a channel requires work, perseverance and risk. Being able to make a course correction, and sticking to it. Thank God these “leaders” only run a TV channel. Can you imagine what damage they would do if they were running something important?
This sucks… Still don’t understand how the crap wrestling (and the like) gets on a “Sci Fi” channel…ah wait, must be the almighty dollar.
This rather ups the anty on making a final pilgrimage to Vancouver, B.C. in April 2011
The problem with SGU is that it never developed the setting. That is, it had decent characterization, but never got around to explaining how they survived on Destiny. How did they eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom? How did they wash their clothes? How did they not all come down with some alien small pox the first time they visited a new planet? How did they not all succumb to vitamin D deficiency from staying on a spaceship for prolonged periods of time.
The “crew” (more like castaway) never made any effort to improve their lot, aside from half-assed hydroponics. They threw away their resources at every turn (the boxes they used to make walls to defend Chloe, the box and weapon that Col. Young left behind in ep. seven).
I liked the show; but would have liked it a lot more if the “crew” weren’t so laughably inept and left-footed.
You and I must not have been watching the same show. The first half of the first season dealt exclusively with those kinds of things. Not to mention, those are things that scifi in general tends to skim over because they’re mundane.
The wrongness of the”crew” was a major part of the premise. In their own words,”These people are the wrong people for this mission.” You could not have this type of antagonist, the wrong people in the wrong place, and then have them run a ship like it was the Enterprise and they were Federation trained. I loved the mistakes they made it made the situation real. The distrust was integral because they were the wrong people for the job. They were finally becoming the right people. Sorry to see it go.
Yeah I liked that point to, because in too many tv shows and movies, you see the average people who are not scientis, not combat or military trained show up and all of a sudden they know how to run and work the ship plus use weapons and technology, I mean if you took a bunch of people from earth and stuck them on an alien ship the sci-fi fans would be bricking themself but fin it cool. and everyone would be unable to figure out what the ship does and thats what stargate universe is all about.
But see, that’s exactly what MAKES it interesting. Every TV show (Sci-fi or other) makes characters that are amazing, perfect for there job or just otherwise so beyond amazing that they are almost unrealistic. (Which can also be fun to watch, as well of course). But what I liked about SGU was that it did something unique… the characters were really really not perfect, and they made some really really stupid mistakes. Yet they did learn from those mistakes even if they learned slowly (unlike startreek voyager characters, for example, which never seemed to change). The characters were three dimensional, more so than many other series I’ve seen.
I also think its true that a GOOD sci fi is more about the characters than the nifty sci fi eye candy and action. The action makes it good, of course, but without characters you have no story. (Without people you have no story!) I am a true sci fi fan… with the exception of cop shows, I cannot watch anything but sci fi, fantasy or horror. So I’m not just saying this because I like soap operas or something stupid like that.
Maybe the problem was that too many SG1 fans wanted it to be like SG1 and it simply wasn’t. I like SG1, but I was never crazy about it. That’s probably because my favorite sci fi shows tend to be the darker kind, and SG1 is rather light and airy. SGU simply isn’t.
Anyway, I hope they bring it back or change their minds. I really really love this show.
SGU IS unique, is like first STARGATE movie, where we (humans) (re)discovered (like many other things) Stargate. SG1 was showing the potential of STARGATE, SGU shows ……. this is what we need to discover
Wonder file
I am so sorry to hear they are canceling Stargate Universe. The last few shows were so good. I was really thinking it was getting to a better story line. Finally the characters were well known and the original mission of Destiny had a lot of possibilities. I hope they change their minds.
the scifi channel needs to be completely put out of business and shut down if they cant keep stargate universe showing. im a graduate of MIT AND STANFORD. and this show was the only show on cable or broadcast tv that was worth a shit. the people that shut it down need to be taken out and shot with no exceptions. there is nothing but crap on cable or broadcast worth watching. and if anybody disagrees with me they can just kiss my ass.
Sometimes I feel that Syfy channel is getting to big and instead of putting out great series and keeping them on they bend to ratings and sponsors I knew when they change the call letters this would happen I don’t want to watch BEING HUMAN I saw it already on BBC America it was a good show but I want my Stargate.
So I call to arms all of the STARGATE fans to boycott SYFY. I know we wont succeed in protesting this but as history has proven if people rally for a show we can get it back on the air. The fans of Roswell did it and the WB brought that show back. So please lets rally.
Not just stargate fans but sci-fi fans combined need to avoid syfy like the plague its everything thats wrong with tv. The recession hit the world hard, my hope was that people would learn from this greed and stupidity result in geting owned channels like syfy don’t seam to of. Ghost hunting, wwe and horror are not sci-fi if this goes on sci-fi as a genre will become extinct.
I was very disappointed to here Syfy would not be renewing SGU. I agree it wasn’t the best in the SG franchise, but I thought it put an interesting twist on the standerd SG modus and I was beginning to enjoy the second season
Cancellation sucks! Stargate is AWESOME! Did you hear that Brad Wright? MAKE MORE!!!!!!!!!!!
Im annoyed by this. however it annoys me more that they cancelled atlantis for this junk..
most syfi shows are not given must chance. instead the put idiot comedy type shows on like wearhouse 13, being human and eureka and try to past them off as syfi…syfi is about mystery not comedy. We have enough idiot comedy shows on already
Yo WTF SGU was and is better than all the stargate shows put there including the flagship tv show which sucked bones by the way finally SGU comes along with an awesome story arc and they kill the show after moving it around to time slots of doom come on Syfi you Killed The show with inconsistency and break ing the season up so far apart. SGU should still be runnin but you jerk wads screwed the F!@$ up.
starship universe keeps me glued to the tv.Great program ! there are pages to be written about it.Please do not cancel. In this show it is hard to figure the ending week to week. This snow can go on forever. There are so many possiblies. Will they find heaven ?
I agree it is a sad sad day in space. This really sucks….
I know that I lot of my friends are going to be very upset when they find out that its been canceled. SGU Was by far one of most realistic SIFI show to date. It is 3 dimensional sifi drama that tailors to people with more than a 3 second attention span.
The previous SG1 audience ( as I read many comments )mentioned that SGU was either too serious or lacked in fighting and sexual situations or comments which brings me to the 3 second attention span that I previously mentioned!!!
It needs more time to build the new audience!!!. When I told some of my friend recently about SGU there first reply was “AW not that cheesy SG1 show” when I told them that they changed it completely and made it a serious Sify drama then they watched it. and guess what! they loved it and cannot stop watching it.
If SGU would have been not been associated with the SG series it would have been a success right from the beginning. when the old fans of the SG series first heard about SGU they were eager to watch it but were disappointing because its nothing like the previous SG’s and the audience that would enjoy it would not even give it a chance due to its predecessors. They tried to make a transition with SGA towards the end but this obviously was not enough to pull in the right audience in the time frame that they needed in order to justify the cost.
I would not be surprised to hear that they are bringing it back due to public demand in the future, because the new audience is growing.
I really hope they bring it back.
I think stargate Universe was brilliant because it catered to everyones needs and every science fiction fans dreams, and because the world and the universe is not perfect or a perfect place and that is what many science fiction shows like Farscape, Star Trek and stargate (All Spin Offs)point out is realistic, because we all have diffrent personalities, come from different backgrounds, and how to deal with things differently, and allow I like the possibilitis of a utopian future imn most shows, i like the realism that stargate universe provides, if we took your average people who are not scientis, engineers, or doctors and stranded them on a planet or ship that we were not familar with we all struggle to get to terms and adapt to them.
Its not surprising that SG1/SGA Fans hates SGU as SGU is a completely different animal than SG1 and SGA.
Not that I want to boycott syfy for canceling SGU, but with sg-1, Atlantis and caprica gone, theirs nothing left on syfy to watch, all their new shows are crap, “being human”? wolf & vampire shows & movies have been milked already !Gawd!, so by default I will stop watching syfy after the last ep of SGU, if sg-1 lasted long enough to be the longest running show before smallville took it, then why cancel an audience getter like them, ratings are down because we are in bad econ times. we cant afford to spend on luxury products like cable/sat TV, we need to eat and cloth ourselves first, syfy needs to ride it out til things get better, or risk loosing their dedicated viewers entirely.
SGU is not SG1. It would have been nice if the people on the ship had worked as a team and every episode ended with a solid good out come. But as the show went on, I started to love it for what it was. Those people were real. How would I have reacted if stranded on an alien ship with only a glimmer of hope to go by. How would I have dealt with it all? Would I have lash out? Threw myself into my work, or be the perfect little solider? Maybe seek the comfort of someone, or something to ease the pain. These are outlets we all use in life. I know SGU was not the perfect show, we all wanted more off world visits, alien encounters, and more happy endings. But what I got from SGU was great too. I got that glimmer of hope, they would start to trust each other and work together. Every time they squeezed threw trouble and drifted along with a busted ship I had hope, they could make it threw. I understand not everyone could like this show. I just wish it would continue, this is a journey I wanted to be apart of. Even if it was alone.
they should at least let destiny and her crew to get home
in stead of just putting them in to stasis or to sleep for three years
and not leave the series in a cliffhanger
I am always the last to know whats going on i swear. This is my favorite show of anything showing at this present time on any channel. I of course was loving syfy for showing it, and am disgusted they are closing it down.
Needless to say I wont be watching anything on syfy ever again.
Ive watched all the stargate series, and this was by far the best imo, and im shocked and saddened to see it go.
I looked forward to watching it every single week, and now that i cant im done with syfy. THANKS SYFY APPRECIATE YOUR STUPIDITY. BTW, this was the only show i watch regularly at all and wont miss, i tivo this weekly, and now that its gone, tivo is useless to me. I AM SAYING A PRAYER SOME OTHER NETWORK PICKS THIS UP AND STARTS OFF WHERE SYFY THREW IN THE TOWEL. DISGUSTED WITH SYFY. SO DISGUSTED I HAD TO COME LOOK FOR SOME PLACE TO COMPLAIN.
i am so tired of them getting rid of sgi series it is making me so mad it was a good show and then boom ANOTHER ONE IS GONE THEY MUST stop doing this to the fans it makes me mad like i would watch a new show they throw at us for them to say cancelled bring the show back we loved it and the ending is leaving us all hanging… i loved alantis then it went bye bye enough bring back universe or someone else pick it up…………. i hope they read all of us saying they were wrong…
I absolutely agree to almost all comments here.
I’m from germany.
I’m absolutely pissed about the cancelation of SGU. The lastest episodes are on TV here right now, that’s why I’m writing so late.
I’ve recently startet to get some answers of my questions, and now I read on the german syfy-Page, that there will be no further season of SGU. Really, I’ve posted there as well, is there no way to continue? It’s truth, I did not love the SGU right from the start. But after some episodes, I started lovin it so much. And now I’m left with my thoughts and with my not-answered questions.
I cannot really describe, how much I’m diappointed about the decission not to continue. Please, think about it. Take a look around the world and consider that there are fans averywhere. We all want to have further seasons.
I even would accept a book or a movie to get the story closed.
I am really p.off. How can they leave hanging like that?
Syfy needs to take a good look at themselves and what they are doing.
If they keep airing shows long enogh for people to get into it and then just cancle it. there going to lose viewers and potential clients.
Soon with the way things are going Syfy fans are are going to get to the point to where they hate and despize the network all together.
I think i can speak for everyone when i say, We want Star gate universe and the rest back on track. and Syfy would be wise to listen.
Disappointing, while not hugely surprising. The show had in the first half of season two gotten significantly more interesting, but obviously not enough to warrant the shows production expense.
Too bad. I liked the show. I hope they at least give us some closure.
Unlikely as they just wrapped filming.
Booooooooooooooooooooooo
It was crap anyways.
Ah, the last 5 or so episodes were pretty good to be fair.
true
Sad, Sad Day for Serious Sci-Fi Fans
This sucks I really liked this show – it was the only decent quality sci fi show still on the air. I really hope we get a good ending to wrap it up – if they end it on a cliff hanger I will be most vexed. The SyFy channel really doesn’t seem to like Sci Fi does it?
Bingo. They like fantasy and horror. Actual science fiction is…not something the suits in charge like, or understand.
That having been said, I was tiring of SGU; I’ve still got half a dozen eps on the DVR waiting to be watched. The reason: the internal power struggles on the ship, the slowly ratcheting-upwards “angst quotient” (90210, anybody?), … I like my escapism just a little more manichean than that, where you actually *like* the “good guys”…
That’s also because Syfy is as the urban dictionary describes the term: Slang for syphilis, a venereal disease. Someone came in to the great sci-fi house and is killing it quickly from the inside! Bring Back SGU for at least 2 more seasons… is there a petition anywhere?
This is a shame, SGU had a fantastic cast and a great story arc to work with. I really hope the show can get picked up by another network/studio…it feels too short lived to end in the next 10 episodes…at the very least, there should be a movie to finish it all off!!
> SGU had a fantastic cast and a great story arc to work with
I don’t recognize a single aspect of SGU from your description. It was slow, dull, unimaginative and the characters were flat – I can only name a few of them after watching all 30 episodes.
The only good thing I can think of about canceling SGU is that it makes more money available for better shows in the future. It was a terrible concept, to start with. It was badly written, with no imagination and even descended to the depths of unexplained reappearances of shuttle craft, to get the writers out of a hole. They clearly had no clue how to write themselves out of the situations they got themselves into and relied throughout on the STARGATE pedigree to keep viewers – without that, they had nothing.
then, ZING, explain it.

>The only good thing I can think of about canceling SGU is that it >makes more money available for better shows in the future.
Look, where are your better shows in the future (that already happened)? Being human? lol…
Thank God this travesty has come to an end. I just hope this abomination of a show hasn’t done any permanent damage to the franchise.
@David F…. Ummm, where have you been david f? All the permanent damage was done when the JACKWADS who bought the scifi (NOT sy-fy!!!!) channel and started cancelling/dropping the ONLY Sci-Fi shows they had! Then they pull this going green CRAP, if this was not the writing on the wall of the short future of this channel I dont know what was… NO wait, they then brought in wrestling and yeah that is so sy-fy, but NOT Sci-Fi!!!!
Good, now bring back Stargate Atlantis which was way better. SGU sucked.
oh yeah doode, they’re definitely gonna do that now.
I agree. They canceled Atlantis for this?
The show was good! Stop attacking it. It was better then SG-A which was almost the same episode every episode.
RIP SG-U and RISE AGAIN
Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo que regrese Stargate Atlantis
I’am completely agree with you, you return StarGate Atlantis.
Congratulations for your comment
Greetings
Sergio from Mexico
Anita estoy de acuerdo contigo
Saludos
Sergio
Now what am I gonna watch at 2:30 a.m.?
Can’t say I am surprised. When it hit it was great, unfortunately most of the episodes were clear misses.
Yeah,I agree..I loved the original Stargate series but to place the action inside a ship and not bringing anything exciting ….boring!
Just as it started getting really interesting. At least they got more than 13 episodes
Indeed…They were feeding us crap just like the end of Atlantis.
If you couldn’t see it coming there were tons of people that told you otherwise.
That sucks!
I’m so very sad and disappointed right now. Not fair!
Very disappointed, I thought it was a well written show with great actors.
This is really disappointing news. We likely won’t even get an ending because filming already wrapped up, and the producers were talking about how they made the show to go 5 seasons after they finished filming.
No more SGU = end of franchise
They took a great show SG-A rushed it to cancellation and replaced it with the crap of SG-U. It was obvious this day was coming the day that was announced. I won’t miss SG-U at all. Remember SYFY if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Thanks for sullying the legacy of Stargate.
SGA’s ratings, right up to it’s cancellation, were better than what SGU ended up doing. The SyFy exec who had the bright idea of replacing SGA with a “better” show should be out of a job right now.
Good riddance, it was a bastardisation of the Stargate franchise with zero merits riding on its popularity, and a failed attempt trying to appeal to the dumb masses.
Not surprising. It’s a cable channel. They’re all crap now anyway. SyFy is no different. All cable channels are about these days are the fake “reality” shows now.
What does “Ice Road Truckers” have to do with History?
What does wrestling or all the stupid haunted house shows have to do with Science Fiction?
When was the last time you saw anything about nature on the Discovery Channel?
It’s all crap. SyFy is no different. They all might as well just be called “Channel 63,” “Channel 64,” “Channel 65,” and so on.
I so agree Claystation. Star gate is an awesome franchise and SGU was the only reason I watched Sy/Fy. They did the same thing to Star Trek Enterprise…another show thrown over for fluff…How many reality shows can we take?
it was the best show from Syfy… damn… Disappointed….
WHAAAAAAAT????
I must admit, after seeing the majority of the 1st season I really wondered what the producers had in mind for this incarnation. Slow and boring storytelling (not much of a story to begin with, or so I thought). But then, in the last few eps. of that season all that came before just suddenly fell into place in a very good way. I wanted to see more of this!
And behold; the 2nd season started airing, and it was brilliant! IMHO, this series just had to find it’s legs for a bit, and man did it ever. But now they’re cancelling???? What the heck are the suits at SyFy thinking? ‘Let’s kill off any decent programming we have!’?
I’m done with this network, I do not believe they’d even know good television if they tripped over it.
FUCK SYFY, SG:U was a PALE SHADE of Stargate, but it was the only decent thing on that damned network….
add some more wrestling and call yourselves “USA Network”
@Syfy Craig Engler “and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002. Syfy has a slate of new scripted projects lined up for 2011 including …”
moron…. SG:U started October 2009, that’s how much they know about sci-fi, they don’t even know how long their own goddamned show has been on the air…. oh, he’ll play it off as a typo, even so, the kind of moron that’ll make a mistake like that doesn’t need to be in charge of anything….
You might want to check who’s the moron here. It’s the FRANCHISE that’s been on SyFy since 2002.
” The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002.”
See, that’s what those dashes are for – to set apart the list of the shows in the franchise from the franchise itself. I hope you’re not in charge of much, pal.
The show was Crap and it should be removed from the air.
yeah, thats great, they should bring back Richard Dean Anderson again for a 12 season of stargate SG1 and lets bring back atlantis while we’re at it. That’d be awesome. Totally dude. SO BADASS. Lets watch wrestling.
You should be removed from this post
