UPDATED: It came down to the wire for Syfy’s two drama pilots about people with special abilities, Alphas and Three Inches, which were both in serious contention for a series pickup. Syfy just made its final decision, giving Alphas an 11-episode order in addition to the 90-minute pilot. Production is slated to begin in Toronto early next year for a summer 2011 debut.
Alphas, from BermanBraun, UCP and writers Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, stars David Strathairn and follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Penn and BermanBraun’s Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein are executive producing the series whose 90-minute pilot was directed by Lost director-producer Jack Bender. “With each step in the development and production of Alphas, we knew we were onto something very exciting,” said Syfy’s EVP original content Mark Stern. “Under Gail and Lloyd’s leadership, Zak and Michael created a smart, fast-paced script that attracted an amazing director in Jack Bender and an incredible cast.” Co-starring on Alphas are Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada. Meanwhile, it is not over yet for Three Inches. “Three Inches is a terrific project that we continue to be interested in,” Stern said. We are working with the producers and production company to see if there’s a way to bring it to our air as well.
The series pickup is a happy ending for Alphas’ long journey to the screen. In its original incarnation as Section 8, the drama was taken to NBC more than 3 years ago through BermanBraun’s first-look deal there. After the network passed, the project sparked bidding among the other broadcast networks in summer 2007, landing at ABC with a six-episode production order for a possible midseason launch behind Lost. The show was in preproduction, with writing on the first episode underway, when the WGA strike brought work to a halt. After the strike, ABC had to alter its plans for the show. That and creative differences over the show’s sci-fi elements, which the network was uncomfortable with, led to ABC eventually dropping the project. It was then pitched to Syfy, which, after some redevelopment, ordered it to pilot in summer 2009.

Can’t wait for this!! Jack Bender is amazing and David Straitharn is awesome.
Watching 3 inches now – a Misfits knock-off without any of the fun and pleasure. Are the English the only ones good at writing really original, fun and quirky science fiction? This seems forced and barely interesting.
Not likely to watch Alphas. I was looking forward to James Marsters in 3 Inches, which I was hopeing would be as good as Eureka.
3 Inches was Awful. Script was average, pilot was not good. Alphas is awesome. Script is great, pilot is even better.
jeez… what a twisted path to the screen (and why are the Big Three Networks scared shitless of hard sci-fi elements… biggest grossing films of all-time are sci-fi films…)
Kudos to Zak Penn et al.
AWESOME – Congrats to the incredibly talented people involved…!!!!!
Very disappointed re Three Inches. Am one of many fans who want to see James Marsters appearing in a regular series. We know what he can do, and he can do anything. One more mistake by Syfy -Caprica pulled out from under its fans, and Three Inches eliminated. Oh – I forgot, you’ve got Wrestling!
While James Marsters might be a lovely person, 3inches was a weak script compared to Alphas. It’s a much better pick up for SyFy … Alphas brings a whole new energy that the network needs. Looking forward to seeing the pilot.
REALLY? James Marsters fans aside, “3 Inches” was ABSOLUTE GARBAGE in script and execution. He’s too talented to be stuck in crap like this for a year (which is the longest it would have run). It was “Flash Gordon” bad (anyone remember that cheap ass version then Sci Fi did 2 years ago? Thought so…). Don’t worry, he’ll get another, better show.
As to “Alphas” script was OK, pilot average (but hey, this IS SyFy…), Kind of smells like lesser (anything after Season 1) “Heroes” meshed with “Mutant X”…so, nothing special….
And Networks don’t ‘do” hard sci fi for 2 reasons: It’s expensive and “Lost” aside” generally don’t hold sizable audiences to justify putting it on a network (See ‘Flash Forward”, “The Event”,” No Ordinary Family”, even “Fringe” on Fox), Numbers those shows get would be HUGE for SyFy,,,on a network it spells “borderline” (in “Fringe’s” case) or “cancelled”(most likely all the other shows). Sci Fi is too niche for mass market networks, That’s why SciFi Channel was originally created. To appeal to the niche.
I bet your How I Met Your Mother spec is AWESOME.
As ground-breaking and stellar as Battlestar was, almost everything on syfy since has been a string of disappointments. Sorry but, Sanctuary is unwatchable and Eureka’s best years are long behind it. Haven is the only show on the network worth watching at the moment. Syfy are trying to appeal to a middle of the road, middle of the country audience and that’s not how great, innovative shows happen.
First move should be to change the title; 3 Inches? Yeesh. Couldn’t they have shown some cojones and called it twelve inches?
I’m really happy to hear about Alphas being picked up!
It’s the most exciting pilot of it’s type that I’ve yet to watch. Outstanding cast in it too – check the bios on each and every actor…
I’ve never heard of either show. 3 inches or alpha. Lots of people have seen the pilots. Where do you watch such footage? I don’t mean that as in hulu.com i mean if you want to be “up to date” cutting edge whats coming up for next couple of seasons news and shows where do you go?
Everyone is looking forward to seeing James Marsters new tv show. If the Three Inches script is not well written, then change it. Bring back the imaginative talentd writer Joss Wheedon. Let Joss Wheedon write the Three Inches script.
I was not thrilled with the Alphas TV show, quite mediocre and boring. I thought the cast of characters did not blend well and they were annoying. The tv shows like Heroes, Santuary, Warehouse 13, Leverage, Fringe, Torchwood and others are superior in imagination, character casting and writing. I would rather see the new tv show Three Inches, there cast sounds like an excellent match. I also would like for the three Inches show to be the originally planned 1 hour show. I read it would be reduced to a 1/2 hour show, which is a big mistake. Haven’t heard when the Three Inches tv show will be viewed. Maybe they should bring back Joss Whedon to write new tv shows. There’s a talented guy who has imagination and originality.
Now that it’s almost 2012, wonder how people’s review of their comments have changed with Alphas current run.
Really like the 3 Inches pilot show, hope it will go into a series production soon!
Com’on folks!!!’ bring ALPHAS AND THREE INCHES BACK ON
AIR! Someone has to see and feel the genius here!
Thank you for listening!
I watched the pilot for Three Inches and really enjoyed it. I am a huge sy-fy fan and patiently waited for the next episode….
Well to my dismay there was never another one to enjoy.
Any not to rant but wow Im still pissed at how Stargate Universe ended. I loved that show
