Pasadena, CA.- Today the National Latino Media Council (NLMC) held a press conference to release the annual Television Network Report Cards. NLMC is disappointed that this annual diversity report card reflects a decline in Latino diversity at the four major television networks – ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. The report card summarizes progress and shortfalls of the networks’ diversity efforts during the 2009-2010 television season. Networks earn overall diversity performance grades, as well as specific grades based on their employment of Latino actors in primetime scripted and reality programming, Latino writers, producers and directors in primetime programming, and Latino entertainment executives. Specific grades are also assigned for program development, procurement and network commitment to diversity and transparency.
Fox has a number of areas in which it needs improvement. It has done well with recruiting Latino reality actors, Latino writers and producers, and has three Latino entertainment executives. Yet, Latinos are underrepresented at Fox in several areas, including scripted actors, directors, and procurement. It should be noted that Fox’s numbers are very difficult to verify because it does not produce the names of the employees for which it takes credit. Lack of transparency has been an ongoing problem with Fox, and NLMC urges Fox to improve upon this next year. Because of its failings, Fox’s overall grade is a “C+”.
ABC has been a model network in its commitment to diversity. However, this year ABC earned an overall grade of “B-” because it slipped in several key areas, to include recurring and reality actors, directors and entertainment executives.
NBC Universal also declined in several categories and earned an overall “B-” grade. Although there is substantial room for improvement at NBCU, it did slightly better than last year, and NLMC expects this momentum will continue if and when Comcast acquires NBCU. NBCU is struggling in several areas to include a very low number of Latino actors on its scripted programming, and disappointing numbers of Latino writers, producers and directors.
CBS earned the best overall grade of all the networks for Latino diversity with a “B+”. Nonetheless, CBS certainly has room for improvement. In particular, it must increase its number of Latino scripted regulars and Latino reality actors, as well as its Latino writers, producers and directors.
“This was a terrible year for Latinos at the networks,” said Alex Nogales, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, “African Americans and Asian Pacific Americans posted impressive gains in most categories, but when it came to Latinos, the networks failed us.” He added, “Don’t misunderstand, we don’t want what African Americans and Asian Pacific Americans received, the pie is much larger than that, we only want what we deserve as the largest minority consumer population in the nation.”
Last year NLMC celebrated the tenth anniversary of a national movement to change the face of television: the historic signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition and the four networks. “A year ago we lauded the networks for incremental progress in diversifying their workforces in front and behind the camera,” said Congressman Esteban Torres, Board Chair of the National Latino Media Council, “this year the networks, while more representative of our multicultural nation than they were a decade ago, are in need of reaffirming their commitments to including Latinos in creative positions and procurement opportunities.”
Press conference speakers included Congressman Esteban Torres (Ret.), Board Chair of the National Latino Media Council, Alex Nogales, National Latino Media Council Secretariat and President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), and Bel Hernandez, Co-founder of Latin Heat Entertainment, amongst others. It was a worse year for African Americans and Whites on Telemundo, Azteca and Univision. They have whole networks why are they complaining. If the Irish had networks here and were complaining, I would be saying the same thing.
Maury! That is ONE of the most uneducated, least thought out comments I have seen on here in a while. Congratulations on making caucasians everywhere appear ignorant and less accepting! I don’t think that they are complaining. I think they are trying to convey the message that the numbers of Latinos that are tuning are not in correlation with the number of Latinos represented in the industry. Next time I would suggest putting in at least 10 seconds of thought into your posts before you make us all look bad.
Really???
Damn right. Latinos should just stick to Spanish-language media. I get so sick of seeing that damn Eva Longoria speaking English every week. She should learn Spanish and go work in Mexico. Just another example of those damn immigrants taking jobs from Americans.
And while we’re at it, shouldn’t the Jews be working on Hebrew-language networks? And the Orientals…they already have their own networks with those real serious new anchors and the funny letters scrolling across the bottom of the screen, plus they have a billion people watching TV in China…why do they keep trying to be on English-language TV? They should all just learn Chinese or Korean or Japanese and go work on those networks.
Eva is the best looking one on the show all thoser women are ugly. Let’s face it Hispanic females are HOT HOT HOT and the rest of the races have taken notice.
to “maury Drackovich”
I am of latin decent (my parent was born in Cuba). I was born and raised in the U.S. and I do not speak Spanish. Which network represents me?
“It was a worse year for African Americans and Whites on Telemundo, Azteca and Univision.”
This is such a ridiculous statement it doesn’t merit a response, but for the record, in case someone one there takes you seriously – Telemundo and those others you mentioned cater towards Spanish speaking Latinos. In this instance they are referring to English-speaking Latinos.
Hey Jerk. Hispanics are not limited to the color of one’s skin.
one would never guess that though from the way La Raza carries on all the time.
Have you ever watched any telenovelas on Univision, Telemundo, etc.? They all star white Latinos. LOL. Reality check. “Latino” describes an ethnicity. Whites in Latin America are at the top of the heap and are the idealized standard for wealth and beauty.
Turn on any telenovela and you would be very hard pressed to find many non-white Latinos except those playing servants.
if CBS had bought my pitch, “Leafblowers” it would’ve been a better year for Latinos.
Now that’s funny.
That is such a stupid thing to say. But I know thos leafblowers as you call them charge about a hundred dollars a house x 5 houses daily. You’s be surprised the kind of many they make. You are a poor fool and angry that you can’t be a leafblower
What a weird “report card”. Just because you’re good at “consuming” media doesn’t mean you’re good at “producing” media. That logic is just pathetic. I want to get hired because I’m qualified, not because of my race or gender…..anything less is just bad for the soul.
You know what’s pathetic, your ignorant views. Nepotism is alive and well in Hollywood. You don’t necessarily have to be “qualified” in order to work in this business. It’s who you know.
“Nepotism is alive and well in Hollywood. You don’t necessarily have to be “qualified” in order to work in this business. It’s who you know.”
I could not disagree more.
Many a blond 20 y.o. with a C-cup has met the stringent qualification standards.
Everyone in television feels that their position is both tenuous and hard earned. That will make compassion for any other group’s tough time hard to come by.
I hope the networks take this report seriously and ask themselves why can’t they find Latino talent and producers when the cities the shows are filmed (New York and LA) are full of Latino folk.
Sofía Vergara on Modern Family? It’s been a great year for Latinos!
I have to watch Modern Family with Subs on because of her.
If Irish we part of mainstream America you’d have a point. Latinos are the largest minority and fastest growing demo in the US. They deserve to be fairly represented on major network television in front and behind the camera. As far as executives in the business it’s been much needed by all studios and agencies to hire Black, Asian, Latinos etc. For all its liberal claims Hollywood has failed in respresenting minorities.
I think his overall point was that “Latinos” are actually overrepresented in television media when you include Univision. And why wouldn’t one include Univision? Didn’t it recently have the best ratings of ANY major network in the 18-49 demo?
Hispanic/Latino is not a “race”, as every so called race speaks Spanish. It would be nice for Telemundo and Univision to actually be a model of diversity. How often do we see Black Latinos or Indigenous Latinos outside of stereotypical roles? There are Chinese and Middle Easterners in many nations as well. It is ridiculous for the Latino leadership to demand more diversity on English speaking networks, while the Spanish networks are the most Eurocentric and exclusive of all.
I totally agree with you!
Having personally lost out on multiple jobs for being white and not being Latino, I’m calling bulls*t.
I call double bullsh*t.
If you lost out on jobs multiple times to a Latino, you must have been applying to work in food service or gardening. There aren’t that many Latinos who have gotten jobs in Hollywood, and you couldn’t have lost out to every one of them.
Stop scapegoating and rationalizing your inability to get a job in Hollywood.
Hispanic/Latino is NOT a race, and every so called race speaks Spanish. However, when viewing Telemundo and Univision, one only sees White/European Latinos. It is hypocritical for the National Latino Media Council to hold English speaking networks accountable when Spanish language networks are the most exclusive/Eurocentric. When is the last time a Black Latino or an Indigenous Latino has been portrayed in a non-stereotypical role? What about Asian and Middle Easterners who speak Spanish? It would be nice for the Spanish language media to get their act together and be a MODEL of diversity before chastising some one else.
Yes, we got your three posts. Now go burn a cross and quit with the diarrhea of the mouth you ignorant tool.
Actually, I am not white, and I only posted this twice-which was an accident. Can you dispute anything I wrote? Probably not……
Drackovich,
Most of the programming on the Spanish-language networks are not produced in the USA. And do not use American actors, writers, producers, directors, etc.
The NCLR is a group that fights for American-Latinos. And American-Latinos are doing terribly in the industry.
Especially given their percentage of the population and viewing audience.
Thus, the group complains.
This is a good point except that many Latinos that are very successful as actors end up moving to the U.S.A. to make more money. Like Thalia.
Problem is that the big Latino numbers, don’t speak English, so they don’t see US Networks…they can go to films (specially subtitled), but TV is still difficult.
Drackovich: actually whites and African americans are very well represented, at least in (NBC’s) Telemundo, and Univision’s affiliate tele-futura. A great amount of their content consists of Spanish dubbed B 80′s movies. So African and european americans need not be concerned about lack of representation.
Actually, your wrong. Most of the scripted programs that air feature white Latinos and not indigenous, mestizo or Afro-Latinos. Telenovelas feature just as many blonde and brunette Europeans as one would find on U.S. primetime programming.
B-movies don’t represent the majority of their programming. Given that much of the telenovelas are produced in countries with large non-white or mixed race populations, there is no reason for the lack of presence of people of color in telenovelas.
The majority of the Atlantic Slave Trade took Africans to Latin America but one would never know that if one looked at most content on Telemundo or Univision. Similarly, one would find it equally hard to see actors who look like Native Americans from Latin America.
Can you name a single telenovela airing that stars a dark skinned Mestizo or indigenous Latino? What about a black/mulatto Latino?
Thank you! My point exactly…..
As the previous commenter stated, at least Latinos have options. I guess the bottom line is “funding sources” have a right to invest in projects they deem worthy and as a result, the rest of us are far more familiar with their likes than they are with ours.
You’ve obviously never stepped foot in a Spanish-language network. Univision and Telemundo, in particular, are filled with non-latino white employees. They may not be in the majority, but they are certainly better represented than Latinos in the traditional networks. Also, the Spanish networks represent a specific, insular market, whereas ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX are intended to reach a broad audience made up of all Americans. So unless you’re saying that Latinos should stay out of the mainstream, your argument doesn’t hold a lot of water.
If anyone has a right to complain, it’s African Americans. They’re even more underrepresented on the Spanish-language side than they are at the traditional networks.
O.K., that was offensive. Didn’t you read the posts that correctly stated that “Latino” can be of any race? That was offensive because you are using Latino as a code word for Mexican. Which is racist. And not even all Mexicans, but Mestizos. My father is a “Latino” from Venezuela, who came to this country alone when he was 18 years old. You can’t tell by looking at him or talking to him that he is Latino, except that he has dark hair, and can speak spanish on request. So how the hell would you even know if the people you saw at the Spanish Language networks were Latino unless you came out and asked them? One of my nieces is 25% Latino and she is a blonde. I am 50% Latino. Where does that place me? The NLMC is racist by definition.
unfortunatley, racial politics are part of EVERY business until we all put down our flags we will never find a balance in the system— Im not here to spearhead that revolution because its the same revolving door since the business started. I can use the minority card too “im a white female and there arent enough female heads of corporations greenlighting my projects ” but I realise its a waste of my time anyways and Im not one to Whine about it – instead I push boundaries and I push back on the good ole boys & gals who try to “put baby in a corner.” its just a chess game and if you cant play the game then step aside please. I agree with Maury on the FACT that Latinos have their own networks and DO NOT favor other minorities ESP white girls like me. SO, instead of raising my flag, I shall go back to my job and focus on making films that HUMANS enjoy.
Perhaps Hollywood does not fully comprehend or care about the buying power of the 50 million Latinos living in the U.S. It is not rocket science for television executives to hire talented Latino writers that can become the showrunners of tommorrow.
Maury, you don’t notice the NLMC criticizing BET because they are not part of the four networks that many Latinos and other minorities who speak English are generally watching. I’m guessing you’re a bigot in sheep’s clothing, but that nubbin on your shoulders is on to something. The coalition probably doesn’t dare criticize these throwback networks (Telemundo and univision) living in the ’60s for their lowpaying wages and their sexist attitudes and their self-hate (really the #s of “blonde, blue-eyed” anchors/personalities/actors is ridunkulous) and borderline racist attitudes toward ALL people of color should be issues that the coalition might want to address.
But they probably won’t.
A+ for the name…
Dear National Latino Media Council (NLMC), Alex Nogales (President and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition), Congressman Esteban Torres (Board Chair of the National Latino Media Council), Thomas A. Saenz (President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund – MALDEF), and Bel Hernandez (Co-founder of Latin Heat Entertainment):
How many Caucasian American, African American, Asian Pacific American, Middle Eastern American, etc., etc. etc., are on payroll in your organizations?
Based on the above list of names, I’d give your racist organizations an “F-”.
I am latino. I do not seek out shows because of their racial breakdown, I do not support shows simply because they are created by, or are about latinos. I do wonder why the majority of shows tend to fill out their minor roles with minority actors. I do wonder why the majority of shows tend to hire beautiful, thin people. I do wonder why all shows go for big names for guest-star roles, where in reality, it does nothing for the character except have me saying,”hey they were great in Movie X, why the hell are doing a guest-spot?” I do wonder why the same actors score pilots year after year after year. I also wonder, “hey, why aren’t I going out more?”
Most people tend to hire and work with people who have similarities to themselves, be it geographically, politically, or most importantly, sociological. So it’s not really a surprise that this report came out. What did they expect? And what sacrifices were they willing to make to have a network score an “A”?
“…beautiful and thin…” — you forgot to mention YOUNG! Thank God for “Hot in Cleveland.” My only regret is that I’m not playing the next door neighbor. (sigh)
oh darn, the immigrants from Latin America who don’t want to assimilate aren’t being served! the horror! lets all go out of our way to make them happy now.
Wow! Looks like some drank a big cup of racist jerk this morning.
What does your comment even mean? How is the fact that Latinos aren’t being represented in the media due to them not wanting to “assimilate”? Do you mean assimilating to having an all-White media just because that’s how it is?
Maybe he meant assimulating as in striving to judge people on factors other than race.
Latinos are hard to figure out because we make up so many Spanish Speaking countries and all of them are different. Mexicans are different from Puerto Ricans who are different from Dominicans. You can’t really make shows that target all Latinos unless they have broad appeal.
You CAN hire Latino actors for different roles on shows. But that also should be done in a way where all types of Latinos are shown. We come in all colors, not just the Eddie Cibrian shade.
Sofia Vergara is great on “Modern Family” though. If you only view clips of the show it would appear one note and stereotypical, but for viewers who watch, she brings a lot to the character in addition to saying funny things with an accent.
All that being said…
Why does the the report keep using the term “reality actors”? Sort of an oxymoron isn’t it?
Not really. Most reality shows like “The Hills” are phony; producers guide the cast and make suggestions. The shows become improv productions.
…which is why they are more accurately referred to as “unscripted dramas,” rather than “reality shows.”
Hey, where is Raul Mateu to save this?
“They deserve to be fairly represented on major network television in front and behind the camera.”
Says who? This is a business, money talks son.
Hey, look around. It was a terrible year for EVERYONE EVERYWHERE (not much better than last year). Quit whining and join the real world.
