It is usually a great problem for networks to have when all the pilots they’ve orderered come in strong. But, in the case of Syfy’s similarly-themed Alphas and Three Inches, it created a dilemma. Syfy had been looking to launch a series set in the world of real-life superheroes. To increase its chances of success, the network ordered two such pilots, Alphas and Three Inches, “that were slightly different in tone but very similar in subject matter,” said Syfy EVP original content Mark Stern. Alphas, from BermanBraun, in-house studio UCP, writers Zak Penn and Michael Karnow and director Jack Bender, stars David Strathairn and follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Three Inches, from writer Harley Peyton, director Jace Alexander and Fox TV Studios, centers on an underachiever (Noah Reid) who can move any object three inches with his mind and recruits a team of fellow heroes. The hope was for one of the pilots to become a series.
Instead, unexpectedly for everyone at the network, “we found ourselves with 2 pilots that we loved,” Stern said. “They were both excellent and tested very well. Ultimately it came down to which pilot would work best as an hourlong franchise. We thought they both did but felt Alphas had a little bit more potential for that.”
So Syfy on Tuesday gave Alphas an 11-episode series pickup. But it is not giving up on Three Inches just yet and is looking for ways to redevelop it. Usually that is done to fix things a network didn’t like in the pilot. Not in this case. “We loved the cast and the directing, and the writing was fantastic but it’s very similar to Alphas,” Stern said. “Now we have to figure out a way so both show can live on our air.”
To differentiate between the two, Syfy is exploring the idea of converting Three Inches to a single-camera half-hour, a genre the network has been actively pursing for the past several months. If the show stays hourlong, Syfy is mulling several scenarios, including making the show “less mission-oriented and more about the characters and their lives or focusing more on the central character played by Reid and not so much on the team.” Syfy is high on Reid, whose option is expected to be extended by FtvS along with other key cast members.

So, they love the cast, the directing, and the writing. But they want to “redevelop” it.
Three Inches, you’re doomed.
Come on Syfy.NBC has 2 Law and Orders and CBS has 3 CSIs.You can have 2 similar mission based superhero series.
i wonder if they picked up alphas over 3 inches because it is produced in house?
Didn’t they realize their similarities in the script stage? The lengthy development process? The expensive production process???
Alphas was also more promotable — Academy Award-nominated Strathairn as the lead, the executive producer/director of Lost, the writer of The Incredible Hulk… more likely to get attention from the press, even if James Marsters has all those Buffy fans.
Re: In house. Bingo!
They had me at “less mission-oriented and more about the characters and their lives or focusing more on the central character played by Reid and not so much on the team.” Personally, I do not love “mission” type shows. I prefer the in-depth character driven shows. This sounds good to me.
I have no desire to see Three Inches as a half-hour show. I want to see it as an hour show. As far as making it more centered around the main character that is going to get boring real quick. And when you have a talent like James Marsters compared to a relative unknown in the lead you’re wasting his talent in you don’t focus on him and the team members on occasion. Also, fans of Kyle Schmid want to see him back on TV on a weekly basis. Give us a break SyFy, stop jerking us around and decide what you’re going to do with this show. It obvious that you didn’t really curry any favor with fans by canceling Caprica, don’t make it worse by teasing the rest of us who actually want to watch a show that you said you were going to air and now can’t decide how to treat it.
Give to James Marsters his own show, for God sake! I’m so tired to watch him in guest star and requiring roles only! It’s a waste of a talent! I’m not a fan of BSG and I’ve took an interest on Caprica show only because of James. And when his character died I’ve stopped to watch the show.
As somebody who is a fan of both James Marsters AND the pretty-much-unknown-outside-of-Canada Noah Reid, I would much rather see Three Inches than Alphas. And not only because of the actors: because it also sounds more comedic and almost absurd. He can move objects three inches? Not much a of a super-power, but a much more… realistic one. Plus Alphas just sounds like Heroes, and we all know how THAT turned out…. I’m gonna be super pissed if I find out that SyFy decides to shelve Three Inches. But I really hope they keep it in an Hour Long format…. I’ve noticed shows like that really suffer from half hour running times.
But they said size doesn’t matter!
Since these shows are only 11 weeks long it would be easy to put one on in spring and the other in late fall. In “Three Inches’ it would be fun to see what could be done with such limited powers.
DON’T make THREE INCHES into a half-hour show!!! That would kill it before it starts!
You’d have a 20 minute show with commercials!
Why don’t you run the pilot before you decide what the audience would like or not like? People can be highly unpredictable!
Don’t give THREE INCHES a slow death!!!
Unfortunately,I don’t care to watch EITHER of them… nor should you!!. Am I missing something?? “The Incredibles”…”Heros”…”No Ordinary Family”…???put the dog out of it’s misery…seen these shows over and over again. Who cares???…about either of them? And this is the extent of the creativity of this idiot executive…what’s his name…??. As if politically “3 Inches” even had a shot? SY-Fy falling under the ownership of NBC…where Berman -Braun have a deal. Why am I even wasting my time posting this.
I was looking so looking forward to Three Inches, so this is really disappointing! I haven’t James Marsters and Naoko Mori in a long time, and was really looking forward to seeing them both in the same thing. I don’t know whether the pilot’s already been aired or not (UK resident!), but I need to find a way to see it. Cos this is annoying.
I can’t believe you will make the new tv show Three Inches into a half hour show. Poor judgment and decision making. The combination of 2 great talented actors James Marsters and Naoko Mori together will make the show popular. When you have a good blend of characters that will magically make the show. James Marsters character was great in Torchwood and Smallville. You need to keep the tv script toward a action show. Place the two 1 hour long shows Alphas and Three Inches on two different days. That is the smart solution.
I certainly am looking forward to seeing Kyle Schmid on TV again on a weekly basis. And I’d prefer it to be an hour show. Give 3 Inches a chance.
After having watched the Three Inches premiere and the first season of Alphas, I’m rooting for Three Inches! Please keep it just the way it is at an hour long!
Just have to say that after watching 3 inches, it’s got much better casting and writing that Alphas….think they made the wrong choice on which one to lead with.
