This is a shocker. TNT’s flagship series The Closer is coming to an end with next year’s seventh season as its last. This was not a result of contract negotiations gone bad. The contract of star Kyra Sedgwick is up at the end of Season 7 and, like The Office‘s Steve Carell, she decided to move on. Unlike The Office, TNT and The Closer producer Warner Bros. TV opted to end the series with their star leaving. But The Closer is much more of a single-lead show than The Office. “Kyra is The Closer, it’s like continuing The Mentalist without Simon Baker,” one insider noted. Sedgwick, who has been commuting from New York where she lives with her family to Los Angeles where The Closer films, is certainly leaving on a high note. She just won an Emmy for The Closer in August. Also in the summer, the show helped launch TNT’s most promising new series since The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles. That would probably soften the blow to TNT from losing its signature series. The Closer remains the most watched basic cable series of all time and, in its sixth season, which is still underway, it went up from Season 5 in the ratings, a rare feat for a veteran series. Here is TNT’s release:
TNT’s long-running, breakout hit THE CLOSER will wrap up its phenomenal run with a final season in 2011. The difficult decision to conclude the series with season seven was made by Kyra Sedgwick, the Emmy-winning star of THE CLOSER.
“It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought THE CLOSER to TNT viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “THE CLOSER was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT’s original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television.”
“I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on THE CLOSER,” Sedgwick said. “I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year. Mike, Greer, Rick and all of our outstanding cast and crew are forever in my heart. I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of THE CLOSER, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.”
THE CLOSER proved to be a resounding success after its debut on TNT in 2005. The series – which is produced for TNT by The Shephard/Robin Company, in association with Warner Bros. Television – was created by Duff, who serves as executive producer with Greer Shephard, Michael M. Robin, Rick Wallace and Sedgwick. In its seventh and final season in 2011, THE CLOSER will reach its 100th episode. Production of the 15-episode season will start in spring 2011.
“Kyra Sedgwick has distinguished herself not only as an extraordinary actress, but as a remarkable set leader and presence on THE CLOSER,” said Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. Television. “The series has literally changed the face and course of both TNT and Warner Bros. Television, and we will always be grateful for all that she has contributed toward that success.”
THE CLOSER is currently in the midst of concluding its sixth season. This past summer, the series was the foundation of TNT’s strong Monday night lineup, which featured the introduction of the new hit series Rizzoli & Isles.
THE CLOSER and Rizzoli & Isles currently rank as basic cable’s top two series of all time. In 2010, both series averaged more than 8 million viewers, marking a first for a basic cable network. THE CLOSER also kept up the pace by growing its deliveries compared to season five.

To even say “The Closer” and “Rizzoli and Isles” in the same breath is ridiculous – R&I is a stupid, poorly acted, waste of time. Takes several good actors and gives them puerile lines and exaggerated direction – the usually brilliant Chazz Palminteri and Lorraine Bracco in particular are embarrassing. The Closer is, on the other hand, clever, unique, very well acted, and a real winner. The chemistry between Brenda and Fritz – incandescent. I think people are just too lazy to change the channel, resulting in good ratings for R&I. Sad to see the Closer go.
I like everyone involved in this show behind in front and behind the camera, but the reason for its popularity just eludes me completely. I can never make it through an entire episode. The acting seems fine, all the pieces are there, but it has just never once clicked for me the way similiar shows have.
Well, now it’s clear why Brenda didn’t get the Chief job as she should have.
This show is indeed unique and I am heartbroken. It could easily go on for many more years. I love Kyra Sedgwick but I guess she has a life and it sounds as though it’s not something that she wants to continue doing. What a shame….I will truly miss this wonderful, entertaining, character driven show which is funny, dramatic, touching, energetic and many other adjectives that won’t bring the show back.
PLEASE, DON’T DISCONTINUE THE SHOW. The other characters are great. Why not just replace Brenda!!!!! This show is so under rated……I never miss it and I’m sad
The Closer is my absolute favorite show !!! …. I can’t believe it’s being canceled …. Kyra S. and all the cast ….Great job, great TV show …. best of luck …. u will be greatly missed here in this TX town.
Only watched the show a couple of times and it’s loss bothers me not. So I thought it would be nice to stop in and give my thoughts on the matter. I watched the pilot and thought her character was so horrible that I never watched again except for the occasional stop in and it was just as bad.
I so hate to hear the closer is leaving. I LOVE that show. Its funny and really interesting. Even my grandkids love the show. PLEASE PLEASE change your mine. I look forward to this everyday. Its one of the few clean shows on air. Please reconsider?
The Closer was one of my favorite shows, although I will say that the character Brenda was not one of my favorites. After hearing Ms Sedgwick’s comments at the SAG awards pre-show I am very disappointed. She seems to have forgotten that this show gave an unknown over 40 actress star status. I had never heard of her before this show and now she wants to use the fame that she got from this show to go on to ‘better movie roles’. She seems to have forgotten that without the money and fame that she acquired from this show there would be no opportunities for her especially at her age. Her attitude was absolutely repulsive and her dismissive attitude of her fans is just too bad. Hope she realizes what she gave up when she fades away. I think that the group of characters is too good to throw away and I hope that the network has the sense to do a spin off show but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Seems that every show that I enjoy is canceled and replaced with a brainless reality show. I refuse to watch these abominations and wish the networks would go broke or get sued for putting them on the air. There is less and less on TV to watch, cable or not unless you enjoy infomercials or reality TV. Thank goodness for DVRs, DVDs and old movies.
Love “the closer”. Sorry to hear it is ending. But PLEASE, don’t try to replace Brenda. Just let the show go quietly.
Big mistake. Don’t cancel this excellent drama. We have so few chances to experience great writing and supurb acting. Every single character is portrayed with outstanding ability.
This week, at the end of “The Closer”, they announced that there
were only 2 episodes left. How terribly sad to see such a great show go by the wayside. My wife and I have never missed an episode. It just isn’t right to see such a great show come to its end. The cast is terriffic. The story lines are always fresh and for the most part the story lines and plot are not as predictable
as some other shows I could think of. I have to admit that Kyra having to fly back and forth between East coast and West coast would get old in a hurry. So after having done it for 7 seasons I see why she is leaving the show. My thanks to the entire cast and crew for having given us 7 GREAT seasons.
I love this show and can’t believe it’s going off the air. Surely they can find somebody to play a role that will keep this cast together. Mary McDonnell is good, and seeing her weekly is good. This series is going to need a strong character who can hold it together, like Kyra Sedgwick did. The xmas show last year was great.

Was tonights show the last? Are you kidding????…way to leave us fans hanging..how about a finished storyline?!
I personally loved the show and the entire cast. They were all excellent. The humor was wonderful. The only criticism I wish to offer, is that I am fed up with representing the FBI and the military in a bad light, to the point of fabricating lies. This seems to be the Hollywood mentality, and it is really repugnant. Get the bias out of the shows. It spoiled many episodes for me, and probably others.
I just found the closer and now I see its ending I love the show and feel so sad its ending I hope you all change your minds and keep it going please change your minds
I am upset it is ending. I love this show. Please bring it back.
