Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit, the most prominent Oscar contender that didn’t get a festival launch, has one now. The film is scheduled for an international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 10. The picture, which stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, was completed too late for Telluride or the Toronto International Film Festival, where several of the front runner films for Best Picture were unveiled.

Saw it last night…and im almost uncomfortable to say i was dissapointed. Mostly because this movie with those filmaker and that cast just looked like a wet dream for me. It was good…not great. Performances were very good, not great. every scene was good…only a few were really great. yes, i hold them to a higher standard…but this film isnt as good as blood simple, raising arizone, no country, fargo, lebowski….falls in the middle. very linear film, not as satisfying, especially for a straight western as i wanted. liked that they made the girl the true lead…she was impressive. i LOVE the cohens, i LOVE bridges…i dont nominate either for this film though. Hopefully, i can lower expectations enough that others can go and really enjoy
I am very much looking forward to seeing this flick. Bridges, Damon, and the Cohen brothers wouldn’t do a remake of an already great film if they didn’t see a real opportunity to transcend the original.

I am never in town for the Berlinale! Maybe I’ll hang around in Berlin next February for it!
I can’t wait to see this movie!
