Go Tron!! $100M already, and still going strong!
Only 220 million more to break even!
Ahhh… international much?
Well certainly True Grit made for $38Mil has made it’s money back. Go True Grit!
Go Tron, prove the naysayers wrong
Same thing I say about Narnia. It opened small yes, but it’s held it’s ground. Nearing $70M with much more to go. Catching up already to The Golden Compass’d and Eragon’s final domestic take. $100M still possible. Gotta love holiday legs.
Think there’s a chance for Silver Chair, then?
All the hype for tron.. and now, it’s pretty obvious it stands almost no chance to make back it’s investment.. it’s odds of even sniffing $200M are low; globally, it will get there, but it’s going to be an uphill fight all the way
Am I the only one that really enjoyed the Ted Danson TV Movie version of Gulliver? This new one seemed totally unecessary. I feel really bad for Emily Blunt.
RR… lol on that one. How anybody could be celebrating the $100mil milestone as the movie limps out of the holiday season is beyond me. The overseas numbers are even worse. Tron opened to 3.4 mil in Japan. By contrast, Resident Evil 4 3D did 15.5mil it’s first weekend there. Uh-oh!
RESIDENT EVIL is a Japanese property.
What fantastic news – after 12 days in theatres, over the Christmas holidays, with 3D premiums, and some IMAX……..the biggest budget movie released in December 2010 FINALLY managed to crack $100 million!!!!
I bet Disney are having a party tonight! The sequel will be Greenlit very, very soon now I think!
Sorry Bane, word of mouth of those around me who saw it and whom I respect say it was insultingly bad. Love the enthusiasm, though.
haha,Tron has legs, love every moment the naysayers are wrong, these films are designed to break even with home dvd sales anyway, got 2 friends working with the tron animated series coming out in the near future,Tron is here to stay.
Ummm, I think you mean when the studio realizes they have a mediocre movie they say ‘oh well, at least it will break even on the DVD sales.’ No studio would ‘design’ a movie to break even on DVD sales. They want to break even opening weekend, but lower their expectations when they know they have a dud of a blockbuster.
Actually I dont, and I stick to what I said above,no studio in their right mind would greenlight a high budget project like tron without lucrative home video sales in sight, many sequels and like minded projects were only made because of home video sales success-look it up in ur free time.
That’s great about Tron. It grossed in 13 days what Disney had been claiming (around Comic-Con) it would do in two. I had a Disney consumer products exec tell me there it would be bigger than Avatar. Now just subtract 30% for the surcharges that don’t go to Disney and you can see how terrifically well it’s doing. Go Tron!! Bring on The Black Hole, Disney!!!
then subtract 30% from every other film’s b.o as well and ur arguement too!
point is that tron is still doing 6 million every day it will just take longer-avatar is james cameron..no one beats him period.
I thought Little Fockers was supposed to be a bust….guess not.
It’s funny, I read all the hatred from Nikki as well as many of the posters in this site re. Little Fockers and then I saw the movie with my family and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Easy and fun. Nothing more, nothing less.
It’s good to know that critics and negative nellies are meaningless to consumers that want to see certain movies for a some laughs…..nothing more, nothing less.
I am glad the movie is holding up – word of mouth isn’t so bad after all. People are enjoying it.
I’m so glad you’re comfortable with “focker” puns and boner jokes for your family.
I’m not.
This wouldn’t even cross my mind to see with my family.
Tron Still Lives — You are correct, for 3-D films. At this point, “Tron” still needs about $120 million in US box office just to break even. And since 3-D TV hasn’t taken off, DVD sales will be about the levels of a film that grosses $100 million at the box office — in other words, moderate. It’s great so manu fanboys are still creaming over “Tron,” but the reality is, it’s a big disaster for Disney, which is one of the reasons their communications department is furiously trying to spin “record crowds at Disneyland” into a story … they’ve got to get attention off “Tron” and the failure of it to come even close to the hype Disney spun for it all year. It was supposed to be THE big thing, a $350 million grosser that would be the studio’s big, big proof of its overall strategy — it WASN’T supposed to gross $130 million.
why would disney want to get attention off tron in its 2nd week of release?
U just make stuf up,as for the disneyland park it was overcrowded, there is no other bigger hit for dec, which proves people as a majority went to see tron and all the other movies but in smaller amounts..in other words people r saving their money as it costs so much to go out.
In a “normal” year (i.e. a Christmas season with decent family movies) I would have been to the theater several times with the kids by now just to get out of the house and weather. We’ve seen Tangled and loved it and there isn’t a single other “family” film out I would subject any of us to.
How did this happen? This wasn’t a bad year for family films overall, but this season – ooooooof.
I’m neither pro or con Tron. Looks like it’ll end up at about 175. I have to give it points for being the biggest opening and movie of December when all the other hyped and broader movies — Narnia, Fockers, Tourist, Yogi, Gullivers, didn’t Live up to expectations or out right bombed. Seems like a rather lackluster Xmas season. Hope this is not a trend.
Yeah, Tron is really killing it! Golden Compass did $380mil worldwide and the franchise ended. Tron is gonna crawl to $250 worldwide maybe. Covering production and a pathetic fraction on the P&A spend. Woo hoo! Tron Guy will be remembered more than legacy 5 years from now.
Has there been any serious speculation about Disney adapting the Tron(r) franchise for a theme park application? It would seem like a natural next-generation VR thrill experience.
Of course, if their parks get so crowded that no one else can get inside, there’d be no need for something like that. At least not right now….
So much for The Fighter being a, ahem, ‘box office hit’
Black Swan $$ > The Fighter $$
And, critically speaking….
The King’s Speech > The Fighter
But The Fighter partisans will continue to spin the movie as some big box office sensation, when it is not. It is a solid double — not a homer.
Black Swan came out a week before The Fighter yet only has 2 million more in gross. But, umm, sure, Black Swan $$ >>>The Fighter $$ LOL Both films are doing fine and will make money for their studios.
GO TRON!!! Keep chugging Flynn!
king kong opened badly around the 20 something mark and went onto do around 500 worldwide…when are u naysayers gonna give up?
u guys make negative facts up all the time,
apart from avatar, name a couple of other movies that made 100 million plus in 2weeks in december…..arnt that many are there?
ok..my mistake actually 50 mill opening and 550 world wide for kong-point is everyone was blabbing on about it should of done more.
This afternoon I was saw the Black Swan at the Malco17 Madison. And the film had a full house. Which proves word of mouth is powerful even for a small film like this one. I had to admit the film gave me a real rollercoaster ride. It had elements of humor and even some scenes made me jump which I didn’t expect from a ballet drama like this one. Despite its detractors,I borrow a line from Natalie Portman on this one: “Ballet isn’t for everyone.” And the Black Swan isn’t for every film goer either. One question kept running though mind what was going to happen at the final performace of Swan Lake? It was like each intense scene builds toward the final act. From my perspective there was even some Shakespeare in it too; for Natalie’s charactor is pushed to her mental and phyiscal limits but I couldn’t help sympathize for her. Winona Ryder even made her washup balletrina in her small scenes.
I heard reaction from some of the audience when I came out this afternoon. One called it wierd but my best guess it was mixed to say the least. But the film does has its strengths and weaknesses. It reminded me of his previous film the Fountain as well. I did enjoy the film. Yes. But it’s not for everyone.
Ok…so the Tron haters got to me. I am not a gamer, and had no intention of seeing Tron (I saw the original in theatres when it was released a long time ago….). But after reading all the misinformed naysayers on this blog, and the desire to go see a movie during the holiday season, I took the plunge and went to see Tron (2-D, I won’t pay the $18.50 the Arclight charges for 3-D). I admit I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it(as did my friend).
It may not be grossing what Disney would like it to, but imo they have successfully relaunched a ‘dead’ franchise (as opposed to kill one like Fockers or Narnia). I don’t believe its grosses will come anywhere close to Avatar, but the subsequent revenue from ancillary products (games, rides, toys, sequels, etc.) will easily put Disney well in the black.
Yeah, and you saw how quickly they were all scrambling for Kong 2! It is hard to accept two facts: That something we loved as a kid wasn’t that good, and that fanboy enthusiasm doesn’t mean real-world enthusiasm. We’re seeing those both come into play here. If there is a minor miracle and “Tron” does $45 or more this three-day period, I’ll be right with my fellow mercurials praising the visionary management of Disney Studios. I’d love to see Tron become a hit. Just as I’d love to see many films succeed. “Tron” won’t and for one reason: even those who are passionate about it say little more than, “It’s TRON, just more.” Their endorsements are hardly ringing. First week of the year should tell us for sure if anything from “Tron” is salvageable … or if it’s guitar picks.
I love pj’s kong but really wouldn’t want to see another reinventing or sequel any time soon as it’s a one off.(spoilers…kong died at the end)
Facts are facts…and it was 3 hrs long so less showings per day and STILL managed to do 550 worldwide…..next useless attack please.
LITTLE FOCKERS is doing well only because it has no competition as a broad-appeal comedy this season. But I feel bad for any family that takes their kids to see this collection of crude and witless bodily-function and erection jokes. Everyone on screen is capable of so much better and it’s a shame the people behind the scenes let them down.
On the other hand…go TRUE GRIT and BLACK SWAN! Proof that smart movies that appeal to adults and are made on sane budgets (though it’s been said SWAN’s budget was insanely low) can be winners for the studios. No matter how much FOCKERS and TRON make, it’s encouraging that GRIT and SWAN will end up far more profitable.
tron is smart, and im really looking forward to black swann and true grit big time, need something to level out all the scifi!
