More than a month after we broke the story about Cartoon Network’s decision to cancel live-action series Unnatural History after one season, fans of the show continue to weigh in on the cancellation in the comments section of the story. They have now been joined by Unnatural History creator Mike Werb. He just posted a note thanking everyone who had expressed support for the Warner Horizon TV-produced show, which was set in Washington, D.C. and centered on Henry, the skilled son of globetrotting anthropologists solving the postmodern mysteries of high school with the help of his best friends Jasper and Maggie. Werb also addressed the prospects for Unnatural History continuing on another network and laid out his story ideas for Season 2. Here is what he wrote:
I am sorry but we have been unable to secure a second season from another network. The reasons are too tedious to get in to but thanks for loving what was. It’s nice to hear that the show I intended to make (a show that both kids, teenagers and parents could watch alone or together without ripping their eyeballs out — reached some people — even if that audience wasn’t large enough to satisfy the network. There’s some website on facebook where people hit “like” to request that Warners release the season on DVD. In case you are on FB and so inclined – I think it’s called “unnatural history dvd release.”
SEASON 2 THOUGHTS for those interested: I had planned a 2-part opener with extreme adventures involving Genghis Khan’s tomb, a Mongolian death worm, Henry’s disappearance in a sand storm, the rescue of a newborn camel as well as Henry’s parents and uncle Bryan. The rest of season 2 (upon the leads return to DC) would have covered subjects ranging from the kids finding the 18 1/2 minute gap of the Nixon/Watergate tapes, Hemingway’s lost novel, vampire finches (they really exist), a Stradivarius violin, a Native American mystery, DB Cooper, the underground railroad, etc. etc etc — plus a deepening of the triangular relationship between Henry, Maggie and Jasper, the return of Jasper’s mother from France — among other familial and emotional issues set against historical and scientific adventures.

Nellie, let me start by saying that next to Nikki you provide the most competent and relevant information on this site. You have been an amazing addition to DHD. Having said that, I know it is the holidays and the town is comatose but I think we would rather read nothing than silly stories about a host’s bad luck on a game show or the 2nd year plans for a show that no one watched and has been cancelled. Better to wait til the new year and report actual news, no?
unnatural history is awesome until they cancelled it
these are 40, 30, aand 20 year olds commenting on this (some kids). the creater of unnatural history should get the kids opinion of what they think of it. as of me im 12 and i really liked it. i never missed an episode. even the mrathon never got up out of the couch. absoultly loved it
I agree with you. I absolutely LOVED the show! My mom even said SHE liked it. I am 14 however. I never missed an episode and unfortunately I will never see another one again. I did not like the fact that they ended it the way they did though. I think that it should have another season just because they left the audience in suspense. A lot of the times more people will watch it if the series has more options to watch. I know at first I thought it would be not interesting at all and so the first time I watched an episode, I thought it would be another one of those cheesey kids’ shows. But after one episode, I was HOOKED! I wish there was another season soooooo much! Maybe the director or producer or whoever runs it, will maybe change his mind someday! I still have hopes.
Alicia_ i totally 100% agree with you on this show. i always watched it and whenever i missed an episode id go online and watch it.i hate the fact that they didnt make a 2nd season. By the way the day you posted this was my birthday.
another thing is that all the good shows that CN cancelled THEY WERE FREAKING WRONG!!!!!!! tower prep unnatural history and the others viewed by people that they liked. every day i come home i always watch cartoonnetwork, every day i do i think about unnatural history and tower prep. (i dont no if tower prep got cancelled). JUST BRING BACK UNNATURAL HISTORY AND U WILL MAKE ALL OF THE KIDS OF THE WORLD HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will make a lot of parents happy too! My wife and I actually liked to watch this show so much with or without our kids. It was truly one of the best shows this network has ever had that really expanded its viewer base from just kids to those that coulc actually pay for products the networked advertised. I hope another creator really keeps trying to get this show picked up on another network with the same cast, cause I will follow for sure.
Still thinking about how sad it is that “Unnatural History” was cancelled. It’s summer in Seattle, but still not very warm and I would love to let the kids stay up a little later and watch an episode with them. We have not been able to find any other show that we really enjoy watching together. I hope to see another network pick this up.
I wish there was a way to make it an Internet show or move it to like TNT or scyfy but it’s probably wishful thinking along with wondering why tower prep isn’t back yet.
How could you do that to ALL your fans!!! You should be ashamed of yourself. You let a lot of people down (including me) and you could care less!

I have three kids 10, 9 and 7 (2 boys and a girl). They all love Unnatural History. We watch three shows together as a family and all enjoy them. Unnatural History, Tower Prep and House of Annubas. They are all great shows for kids. Unnatural History really teaches them how cool history can be and all make them think with open minds. It is a shame that CN comes up with a great show like this and can’t give it the chance to succeed or at least give it a proper ending so kids aren’t so disappointed.
My kids have lost faith in CN because they thought you were a different kind of network.

I so agree. My kids 12 and 13 were looking forward to the second season of Unnatural History. I too for that matter. We watch it as family. We really enjoyed it. Me and my kids are disappointed. Sad that I just found out cause have been waiting for it to come back on. Cartoon Network your lame
Upset to find this out now – gonna have to try to find the 1st season on dvd as my then 5 yr old (now 6) daughter LOVED the show and admired the main character. I even had to hulu an episode she missed. cartoon network is stupid for canceling and interesting show that the whole family could watch and actually be interested in. guess that’s the way it works – stupid shows live on forever while the good ones die young

This show is actually one of the FEW shows which I really ENJOYED in the recent times. I do NOT care which channel this show comes back on, but I wanna see more! Cartoon Network and Sci-Fi have a lot of CRAP in their line-up right now. Unnatural History could easily get a spot in any of those two channels (or any other). This show has a lot of unique qualities—it is absolutely entertaining and it gives you entertainment without any kind of grossness, extreme violence/language, or horror. The American TV needs something polished and civilized like Unnatural History for a change…
I agree just because it doesnt have red gushy violece in it doesn’t mean its a bad show. I miss comming from school Tuesday nights in Agust & September and just counting down the minutes on the clock until the show started with all my family! Me personally I im into History and all that stuff they talked about in the episodes,it was the only show I could really relate to. Cartoon Network made a big mistake letting Unatural History go! I’ll always be an Unatuarl History fan and I’ll always be waitng for season two,three,four,and ect.Mike Werb!!!
i loved this show with a passion it was the only show on cartoonetwork with substance! All cartoonnetwork cares about is promoting stupid crap that doesn’t matter. I am 10 and all of my family would watch this show and really enjoy it!! Some network needs to take unnatural history back on!
Absolutely agree. No need to worry about inappropriate content or language. It was fun & something the whole family could watch. Truly bummed that it’s gone.
Well obviously you are a nearly grown if not already grown person, as is evident in your ugly tone and language. The show was aimed at tween kids, and I believe had a great message, creative and intelligent plots and lots of fun historical facts. My daughter loved it and we could watch it together and both be entertained. I sincerely hope the creator will try again in the near future to get it picked up again.
of course people like you mat are ecstatic to have the show cancelled because they love to watch mind rotting poorly thought out garbage that is 99.9 percent of cartoonetworks shows. and if you and people like you can use its CARTOONnetork and its an unatimated show as a sheild then fine but alot of cnt network viewrs know that its the best thing they have broadcasted in a while.

This show was awesome. What a loss to families that like to watch TV together.
They need to cancel TOWER PREP, too.
Don’t even go there. Tower Prep is crack of the first order. It’s all about tone–Prep got it right and Unnatural didn’t. Werb talks about needing to give parents and KIDS something to watch “without ripping their eyeballs out,” yet guns blaze on Unnatural and the tone is more Bourne than kid-fantasy. See for comparison the pure liquorice that is Prep.
Make no mistake, Prep is not a good show (at least, they seem to be making lazy storytelling decisions…that may or may not actually have to do with budgets) but it insists on its innocence and hits all the right spots.
I guess the moral of the story is that you really can’t fuck with getting the right producers on a property–Dini, Bill O’Dowd and the Morgans on Prep. Interestingly both shows got a producer from Roswell, which should be enough to produce a decent show for either, but Prep seems to have gotten the sole benefit of that. I wish you all the luck in the world with your show, Mike Werb.
It is too bad Cartoon Network canceled this well-written, engaging and intriguing show. But as I told them in their Feedback page – if it is too late for them to come to their senses about “Unnatural History” – please don’t do anything to stand in the way of it moving to another network.
My husband and I enjoyed the show as much as our children. The show was definitely well written. Hopefully it will be brought back.
I have known Mike to be a nice guy, well-liked and supportive of other writers as a teacher at UCLA. But my ability to sympathize is inhibited by the fact that he is the first monthly judge of the odious Amazon Studios’ screenwriting contest. Mike, I don’t know how you can rationalize lending your name and reputation to a venture so exploitative of writers and unhealthy for the craft. Really disappointed.
That’s ridiculous because Tower Prep has way less views then Unnatural History. Not to say Tower Prep is not a good show but Unnatural History is way better than it. Go on Wikipedia and look at the views for both Tower Prep and Unnatural History and you decide. Besides the views Unnatural History was a enjoyable for everyone to watch Cartoon Network made another bad decision.

I wish they could bring the show back on another network, a network that would properly appreciate the show. CN is not a live action network but they had a very good show and stupidly let it go.
I am so disappointed that this show was canceled. It was funny and engaging and didn’t talk down to the age group it was aimed at. I enjoyed watching a tween show that didn’t make me feel like my brain was melting like the sitcoms on Nick and Disney. Add my “like” to the petition for DVDs.
I’m not getting my hopes up about Tower Prep, but it really deserves a second season.
I loved the show and I was a teen I was really disapointed to c tht there would be no season 2 I wonder if nickelodeon would b intrested? I mean figuring tht Kevins little brother Kendall is on a show (big time rush) on there?
My daughter and I loved this show and watched it every week, we are so sorry that the network chose to cancel. Our world is nuts two shows about Pawn shops but lets cancel a great family show…..thats where our country is headed!! THANKS for the great writing and great young actors.
My wife and I are baby boomers who are very select in what we watch on television. We loved Unnatural History and watched it every week. Reminded us of Indiana Jones. I think Cartoon Network could have had a big hit on their hands had they promoted it more to the viewing public. I don’t think a lot of people knew about it.
A great show that died way before its time.
For me Unnatural History is such a good show and I can’t think a reason that CN let it go. I just hope too that they can get some new network that knows how to appreciate shows like that.
I really love Unnatural History!!! Without it, Cartoon Network really sucks.
My whole family liked Unnatural History. We knew it was not realistic, but enjoyed the fun of the show. As a parent, I appreciated that I wasn’t going to have to distract from characters stripping or anyone actually getting major injuries. I’m sorry to hear the show isn’t coming back and hope Tower Prep gets a chance.
tsk, tsk, tsk. Well, Werb, your just going to give up on Unnatural History? For all your fans? People love this show no matter what it takes to get it back? no. we have to keep going, for the actors, the crew, and you, even. we have to keep going united as one to retrieve this show again. so, Werb, why would you just give up on this opportunity to bring your show back? who cares if a lot of networks rejected your show? its not the end of the world if they reject it? Right? maybe there is another network that will give unnatural history a second chance. but here’s a question for you Mike: will you or will you not just cancel everything you had for the fans to just dissappoint them? your choice Mike. fail the people, the actors, the broadcasters, the crew, and even yourself. I hate to write this, but it is the truth. (P.S: Did you ever try the Hub network?)
chris: i have not given up — but the task is sisyphean — and at this point there is no indication i will actually push that massive boulder over the corporate hill. i just don’t want to raise anyone’s expectations, considering that we had no luck at every avenue you (and others) have suggested including the hub. i am certainly not sitting on my rump about this. nothing would make me happier than to be stunned by a turn of events.

mr werb im 21 and i love unnatural history. its one of my favorite shows. with all the fans behind you you cant give up. people really do like shows that arent all about violence and drugs and all that. unnatural history is like shows i grew up like are you afraid of the dark and others where it was more about the stories and adventure and imagination then anything else. shows now are just stupid and senseless. and you actually learned something from unnatural history.and it was fun to watch and try to solve the problems that the characters faced not to mention how it looked like there was a little romance going on which is always fun. please mr werb dont give up on finding a network. i hope one day i can see the second season soon that would be so awsome.

I prefer a tv series, but I would even love to see Unnatural History as a direct-to-video kinda deal in some way. Maybe a series of movies instead of a show. I loved UH; there aren’t any other adventure type shows around!
Have you considered doing the show and putting it online instead of having channel pick it up? Try and find a different way to get sponsors, so the show can still be watched and production paid and all that stuff. I’m sure that it could be done. Give it some thought and talk with the right people. WWE does it with NXT. I’m sure there are others out there that do it as well. Someone could help I’m sure.
Mike? maybe you could just film it roughly and put it on youtube…. i know that it wouldnt be a very good way of making it, but i loved the show and really liked the ideas you had for season 2… cant believe its been canceled… i live in australia and just recently found this out after watching the last episode… i thought it was great, great writing, great acting… the works

You’re right, man let’s make this protest as big as possible, let’s protest on the Unnatural History Site, the wiki, the Cartoon network site, blogs and social networks, send the veiwers links of the sites to see it on like youtube and tupeplus, and like the idea of the dvd realease (people watch it,they’ll support us)!
Tower Prep is nothing but a shameless rip-off of NBC’s Strange Days at Blake Holsey High, which was by the way, a far superior show. Nothing good coming out of CN these days I’m afraid.
Canceling unnatural history was sad cartoon network shouldn’t have cancelled it I loved it so much watching reruns Over and over. I will stop watching CN if they cancel tower prep because there is no better show and no reason to change it to this network.
