EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has won the auction for the untitled pitch package for Recount’s Jay Roach to direct Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as rival candidates in a comedy timed for release in the heat of the 2012 Presidential elections. The comedy, which Deadline revealed when it reached studios Friday, will be written by Chris Henchy, the co-writer of The Other Guys, and Shawn Harwell, best known for his work on HBO’s Eastbound & Down. The film will be produced by Ferrell and Adam McKay through their Gary Sanchez Productions banner, Roach through his Everyman Pictures banner, and Galifianakis.
The CAA-brokered sale closed on Saturday. Haven’t yet heard numbers, but in the last two pitches which the agency brokered for Gary Sanchez, Columbia Pictures essentially committed to make a movie with a full budget and fees for The Other Guys and Talladega Nights.
Both were turned into hit movies. Ferrell is coming off The Other Guys and Megamind, while Galifianakis is reprising in The Hangover Part II after starring with Robert Downey Jr. for Warner Bros and Todd Phillips in Due Date and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Galifianakis also played a scene-stealing supporting role for Roach in Dinner For Schmucks. Mosaic manages Roach, Ferrell and his Gary Sanchez cohorts while Brillstein Entertainment Partners manages Galifianakis.

Another movie no one but leftists want to see, unless it’s the story of President Obama droneing innocent woman and children to death in Afghanistan and Pakistan. You Hollywood liberals know about that right? Or does NBC/MSNBC not report that little bit of nasty news?
Going through life angry is no way to live. Good luck to you.
But as soon as anyone says anything pro-conservative you go out of your mind with rage.
yes, that’s excatly what one should take away from this, try pulling your head out of your ass and let some sunshine or at least humor wash over you. and if you have a problem with “Hollywood elitism godless liberal mentality” tune out, go watch dancing with the stars or some other mindless entertainment you just might understand with your big brain.
Yes, I heard on Fox News that President Obama can actually direct the drones from his iPhone. By the way, how are you handling the fact that Fox News majority shareholder is someone that you consider “the enemy”?
Getting stuck with Zach Galifianakis is hardly a win for anyone.
No kidding. ZG is a nasty piece of work. I thought V.Vaughn was bad.
Amen to that! I would have also said Jon Favreau until he directed Iron Man.
To bid on s “pitch” with these two “career over comics” and this
“unfunny director” is guaranteed to be funnier then the eventual script. Who sat in that pitch meeting and belly laughed going POMG that’s great great?
I can predict there will be more laughs if the Republican Party inhales the “bullshit gas” and nominates Sara Palin.
Line for line Sarah will out due this predertermined crap.
BTD
Jay Roach is an “unfunny director”? And this would be on what planet?
BTW, the overuse of quotation marks is one of the top signs of an uneducated fool trying to pass themselves off as an intelligent individual. Best of luck with that.
“Scene stealing role in Dinner for Schmucks”? Um, no. He was awful, as was that movie. I hope this one is better.
Zach is the man!!! Very talented and very funny and down-to-earth guy. So what’s not to like? This new project sounds quite promising. Moreover, there hasn’t been a funny political movie in such a long time.
That said, “Due Date” was half-baked and dim-wittted (not ever Zach or Downey could save that celluloid crapola) so I earnestly hope that Zach chooses future projects more carefully than he did “Due Date”
The hook for “Due Date” was RDJ for Zach. His folks figured that was a win-win scenario. Little did he know, the script actually does matter.
Reasons Zach would pick Due Date
1) It is directed by the person who made Zach famous
2) It stars one of the best actors today
3) Its concept isnt horrible
how much you want to bet that someone gets hit in the nuts in this movie….bet you anything
I will NOT take that bet.
You want to bet a furry little creature will get flushed down a toilet, or stuck on someone’s nards?
Or this bet, theme of movie, white conservative people are evil Christians, multicolored soulful progressives are good and care about recycling.
Take your bet.
Wait, you mean there was a Will Ferrell packaged project that Sony DIDN’T pay through the nose for?
This seems like a smart buy ONLY if they can get the film in cinemas for the 2012 Presidential elections.
If they can hit their release target then the marketing on this thing writes itself.
If not it becomes an expensive cautionary tale that no one will learn from.
Ferrell’s film career has been atrocious, but I’d pay money to watch him do his President Bush schtick again. One of the greatest parodies/impersonations ever.
Love the idea of this trio. Ferrell and Zach are both on an upswing. Anything that comes from any writer on Eastbound and Down should bring the laughs. I’m excited for this.
Please..all of you. If Zack wasn’t fat,he wouldn’t have a career. stop trying to market him as john belushi,an amazing talent. anyone seen “due Date”…point made.
How DARE you speak ill of Zach Galifianakis?!? He is to film what David Foster Wallace INFINITE JEST is to literature. LOVE Zach!!! Love, love love!!!!
Zack had one funny role in the Hangover… the rest of his career is the comedic equivalent of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.
People seem to be afraid to say it’s not funny the 3rd or 4th time you see it recycled.
Zack does the same schtick in every movie with little variety to it.
14:59
The same Schtick in every movie with little variety to it?
Does this not apply to Ben Stiller? Steve Carrell? The list is long.
None of these guys have the goods and gift of Woody Harrelson. Woody is funny AND turns it all out in THE MESSENGER and NO COUNRTY FOR OLD MEN.
Steve Carrell is a colossal zzzzzzzzz.
I remember watching ZG years ago being really funny and completely unmarketable. The stuff he did made it seem like he was telling Hollywood not to cast him in anything. He only plays generic “outrageous fat/weird guy” now in every movie because that’s what gets you put in mainstream movies. Step 1) toil in obscurity. Step 2) IF you get your shot you turn in your marker for a pay day and hang on until the ride’s over. Otherwise, repeat Step 1) ad infinitum.
Since we’re on the road to FULL disclosure here. If he wasn’t fat you say… If most of the alleged talent in film and television didn’t have a cock and balls between their legs, they wouldn’t even have a shot let alone a career. Fat, cock-n-balls, nepotism…how much time do you have? Seriously. Most of the self-congratulatory deals happening on a regular basis are NOT based on pure comedic genius and talent. Many decisons in these deals are fear based productions. Men covering their collective asses and attempting to come in under budget. Now, I am a woman. I am female. And Zach Galifianakis makes me laugh. As a consumer, I choose to pay to watch him in any and all media wherein he appears. Gimme Zach Galifianakis, Clive Owen, Chris Cooper, Ben Foster, Jeremy Renner and Larry David. I like to think about Larry David and his old man long balls while I watch him on HBO, which I also choose to pay for. He makes me laugh. And I guess part of the reason he makes me laugh is the simple fact that he is funny, old and in my imagination has droopy long balls much the same as Zach is funny and zaftig on Bored To Death, also on HBO, for which I pay. I love the writing by Jonathan Ames. And yeah, I’ve got a soft spot for Danson too. Zach, LOVE you!!
You are probably really, really old. Either that or really, really isolated. I know you must pine for the days when Malibu’s Most Wanted was out in theaters but comedy has evolved a lot in the past few years and Zach represents the cutting edge. Sorry you aren’t going to any cool parties or anything. Hopefully one day they will have medication for people like you; the chronically lame.
John Belushi erased his own map with drugs. An overdose. Remember?
If this constitutes an amazing talent, well then. But I digress.
Zach is in a league of his own. As was Andy Kaufman.
Will the Hollywood cowards dare to do another left leaning political film after what happened in the mid-terms?
Stay Tuned.
Regardless of what you think about the two leads, Jay Roach is a really good director. This sounds like a home run to me.
Leftys making movies in Hollywood?
I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
Will is THE highest paid actor in Hollywood when it comes to contract vs. box-office-take ratio.
More power to them.
I am,
The Hollywood Republican
YES! Somebody did the ‘shocked, shocked’ thing! So fresh, so new, so –*BARFS*.
+1 For the Casablanca reference.
when will somebody do a comedic spoof on Mohammed? Why is everyone so frightened of doing such a project if it is truly a religion of peace?
Why don’t you wait to see what the movie’s about. Jeezum crow. Some people are so anxious to get their panties in a bunch they really don’t even wait until they know what they’re talking about.
P.S. Go see Four Lions. You’ll love it.
By the time this gets released, ZAch G’s career will be over. Nothing to see here.
You’re right. What time am I coming over to your house to watch Miss Congeniality on Blu-Ray, you douche rod?
The two unfunniest man-child idiots in show buisness “acting” a movie together? Sounds like a real winner.
Will Ferrell has expired. Zach Galifianakis is too talented to be in a movie with that worthless schmuck. This makes me sad.
