The specialty film community was surprised today that, with only 8 days to go until release, Rentrak sent out a date change announcement that The Weinstein Co was moving John Wells’s The Company Men off December 10th and onto January 21st. Especially because the film Wells wrote and directed had been well-received at Sundance and mentioned for the Oscar race even if it was ignored this week by both the Indie Spirit Awards and the National Board Of Review. So here’s what I’ve confirmed: that The Weinstein Co still plans an Oscar qualifying run for one week in NYC’s AMC Lincoln Square and LA’s AMC Century City theaters. The premiere is this Wednesday at The Paris in NYC complete with after-party. But it won’t go wider the rest of the month as planned. “They feel December has gotten too crowded with True Grit, The Fighter, Black Swan, and King’s Speech [opening or expanding] all in the next few weeks and targeted for the same audience,” an insider explains to me. The King’s Speech, of course, is The Weinstein Co’s major push for awards this season.

This doesn’t surprise me it would have bombed at the box office against Chronicles of Narnia and The Tourist. They should just send it straight to DVD that way they won’t lose too much money.
“The Company Men” is a surprisingly good movie — the kind of movie Mike Nichols used to make. Smart script, excellent Affleck performance. Why is no one talking about it?
The movie is okay. Good script and Affleck and many others are good, but if this movie makes a dime especially this depressing mirror of reality in this marketplace, I will eat my hat.
The movie is just okay and would get eaten up against any competition. It is harmless. It’s a fine rental, but it also might put you to sleep on your couch.
Yes, at 9.8 percent unemployment, I don’t see this having much appeal.
why anyone in their right mind would sell their film to the weinsteins is beyond me? they are the most devious, self-destructive nightmares haunting this industry. here’s hoping they fall into the next piranha tank.
Saw this one coming. Expect it to be released in two or three theaters next year and then turn up on DVD in two months. John Wells just got taken by the fat man. When you play the game where only one of the people involved respects the rules, what do you think is going to happen?
I hate that they crowd these “Oscar worthy” movies into one month….one gets the feeling that the movies were made only for the Oscar votes and not for the audience. They should move it to a 2011 release. If it’s any good the audience will find it, Oscar voters will find it.
Geez!
THE COMPANY MEN is a thought provoking film with outstanding performances….please do not let the subject matter turn you off..its a wonderful movie! See it if you can!
The has all the depth and feel of a Lifetime movie. It is well acted but trite and predictible. I think most people will have a hard time Feeling sorry for any of the leads.
Because people want to do business with people that remind them of their parents!
Poster is Ripped Off from Glengarry Glen Ross.
the question is why didn’t Warners take this film?
John Wells has been on their lot forever
BTW, that one-sheet is a total rip-off of the Glengarry movie one-sheet, isn’t it? See below:

The difference here is that all the actors are looking to the sky to try and figure out where their careers went. Costner, Cooper, Affleck, some girl who is for some reason on a poster that reads The Company “Men” but isn’t important enough to have her name mentioned with the Men (oh wait, that’s Golden Globe nominee Maria Bello – I guess her agent at CAA really f-ked her by not getting “use in ads” in the contract), Tommy Lee Jones – they’ve all disappeared.
nicely spotted!
oops. and as for the above comparison to mike nichols? uh … no.
Anyone who actually sees this film gets that it is not depressing. But how do you market that? word of mouth might be it’s only hope and I would send anyone to go see it. I think it’s a good film for holiday, but let’s see how Jan treats it…
I’m getting tired of reading people saying they are surprised to see Ben Affleck in a good movie and that he’s given a good performance. Gigli was a long time ago. Bennifer was a long time ago. The man did make good movies before he started his bad stretch of bombs. But I can’t blame him for that when you have people throwing $12 million dollars per picture at you. He took a break, got rid of Jennifer Lopez, said he only wanted to work on movies that were smart and had challenging characters, and from Hollywoodland to The Town the man has been making very smart and very good films. Can we get off his back, relax, and enjoy the man’s work.
THE COMPANY MEN should have opened earlier in the season.
