ABC Family has renewed its flagship drama series Pretty Little Liars and The Secret Life of The American Teenager. The second season pickup of Pretty Little Liars comes on the heels of the show’s big premiere for the winter portion of its first season that drew 4.2 million viewers, posting huge games from the summer debut and hitting series highs in total viewers as well as all key demographics: adults 18-34 (1.4 million), adults 18-49 (1.9 million), women 18-49 (1.6 million) and people 12-34 (2.9 million). Meanwhile, Secret Life, which put ABC Family on the original series map with its 2008 launch, is being renewed for a fourth season. It continues to be ABC Family’s highest-rated series.
In his first TCA appearance, new ABC Family president Michael Riley, touted the channel’s ratings growth and talked about the six pilots it has in the works. “This is the most aggressive development slate in the network’s history,” he said. “More drama, more action, more comedy to come with ABC Family.”

ABC Family is on a roll! With fun, well-executed entertainment like PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and other things in their slate, I think they’re stepping up as a major player. This is what happens when networks actually take a risk and don’t play it safe.
They should definitely build on the kick-ass arsenal of talent they’ve got, like writer/producer I. Marlene King and actors like Keegan Allen, who is going to go on to bigger and better things!
The Secret Life of The American Teenager is one of the most (unintentionally) surrealist television shows ever aired. I’m glad there will be more insanity committed to our culture.
I agree the show is very bizarre. I especially like that totally affectless young brunette actress – it’s like nobody told her she’s not playing Wednesday Addams.
Sadly, The Secret Life captures a demographic of impressionable 13-16 year old girls. It is very misleading to have a show like that on ABC “Family”….the content is too strong for the time slot.
PLL succeeds because it’s a show for teenagers that treats its audience like intelligent people… shocker!!
