UPDATED: ABC Family’s drama Pretty Little Liars has moved from a ‘promising newcomer’ to ‘bona fide hit’ status. Last night’s winter premiere of the show drew 4.2 million viewers, posting series highs in total viewers as well as all key demographics: adults 18-34 (1.4 million), adults 18-49 (1.9 million), women 18-49 (1.6 million) and people 12-34 (2.9 million). Vs. the series premiere last summer, last night’s winter debut was up by almost 2 million viewers (4.2 million vs. 2.5 million), 67% in adults 18-34, 72% in adults 18-49 and 70% in people 12-34. It was ABC Family’s No.2 telecast ever in women 18-34 (1.2 million) and females 12-34 (2.5 million). ABC Family’s other premiere last night was of Greek, whose fourth season debut followed Liars and averaged 1.2 million viewers. That was on par with the show’s winter Season 3 premiere last January but Greek squandered most of its lead-in, holding onto 28% of the Liars audience.
Meanwhile, Lifetime’s original movie The Craigslist Killer drew 5.4 million viewers last night, 2.7 million of them in the 25-54 demographic. It was up triple digits from Lifetime’s 2010 original movie average. The documentary Beyond the Headlines: Catching the Craigslist Killer, which following the movie, drew 3.7 million viewers.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I loooove Marlene King. Good for her!!
I love her too!
I know right! “Now and Then”!! “If These Walls Could Talk” for the ladies. And now this, which is a supieror teen show.
So as far as I’m concerned nobody should ever defend Dawn Ostroff again. This is proving she is doing something wrong. Nothing on The CW can even score four million viewers let alone grow by over 1 million viewers. Fire her!!!!
“Pretty Little Liars” is the type of show The CW would have made back when it was the far superior The WB. 4.2 million viewers kills nearly everything on that “Network”. Good job. I never ever in a million years would have thought I would be checking for a show on ABC Family, but here I am hooked on this show.
PLL was in development for the WB, but it got dropped when WB became CW. It languished before being rescued by ABCFamily, looking for their own Gossip Girl. They succeeded.
Another show that teaches girls to be lying little bitches. Good job!
Actually, ti teaches you not to be lying little bitches. Everything that happened to the Liars happened because they lied. They held secrets. Ali was killed because of her secret. She lied big time, and is now dead because of it.
You’d have to be pretty stupid to think lying is cool after watching PLL.
In regards to “Craig’s List” a ripped from the headlines(know the entire story) so who cares movie…is this something Tanya Lopez greenlight??? My question??…what happened to your investigation of this blatantly corrupt, intimidating and threatening executive??? and her on the take husband, Stan Brooks? And she’s still at Lifetime? They just screwed everyone they owed money to??? Get back on track nellie… This is where the real story lies…Congratulations Nancy…these type of sad people reflect on you…
@myturn: first off, true crime thrillers have been a staple–a steady and reliable source for tv movies and even some feature films–for years. Second, as with any publicized true story–crime or otherwise–the story is often known ahead of time in broad strokes, but not necessarily all of the nuances, and with the personalities involved.. therefore, dramatizing a true story is a perfectly legit and reasonable programming decision. And apparently almost 6 million viewers disagree w/your ‘who cares’ assessment. As to Tanya–she is still in charge of that dept, so yes, she made that decision Quite obviously, you are not a fan of hers and/or her husband but that is irrelevant as to whether or not she is a competent executive making sound programming choices. Like most people in positions of power, she has her fans and detractors and it’s not really Nellie’s “job” in my view to air your point of view as fact. And before I am accused of working for Lifetime, or being one of Tanya’s friends, etc,I don’t and I’m not. And for the record, I too wish that Lifetime would air a wider variety of films, some with more social relevance/substance, vs exploitative true crime, but this is what people seem to want to watch.
Is it me, or is the writer of Pretty Little Liars a little too fascinated with grown men liking underaged girls?
First, you got the teacher and the main character. Then there’s the Spencer character. She’s 16, but she’s kissed her sister’s boyfriend, who has to be at least 22, and she kissed her sister’s other boyfriend over a year ago, when she was 14/15, and he had to have been 21.They also hint at that same guy she kissed over a year ago also had a relationship with one of her bestfriends, who was also 15.
It’s also weird that almost every male is portrayed in an unflattering fashion. There’s the teacher who likes a student, the guys who hit on underage girls, the father who cheated on his wife and the cop that blackmailed the woman into sleeping with him. It’s just odd that this material is aimed at teen girls.
Actually, I think Ashley volunteered to sleep with Wilden. And in the books, Billy Walden, an adult, was very into 13yo Ali. So yeah, a bit of the age difference. Of course, PA age of consent is 16, and within 5 years is OK if under 16. So most of these older dudes are technically within their legal rights. Oh it’s still wrong, just not illegal. And a teacher and a student? An ep already showed Fitz couldn’t handle it without “protecting” Aria from a student who disagreed with her.
I just love PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. It’s good old fashioned soapy TV & sometimes there’s nothing wrong with that! All the best to the people who put this show together.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is the best new guilty pleasure on the air. It’s not a “morality tale.” Some shows can be, you know, just fun. Keegan Allen, the actor who plays Toby — is going to be a big star!
I think the writers are fantastic. You are always on your toes. I never know what to expect and this season already is gearing up to be soooo suspenseful! Cindercity, you may be reaching a bit with the comments about the show being focused on men and underaged girls?!?! Isn’t that reality anyway? When I watch the show I don’t see that. I guess that’s why it’s called drama
I didn’t really say the show was focused on it, just that the writer may have a fascination with it.It’s not really a reach, as there are
at least 4 instances of it in the first 8 or so episodes.
Even if it’s a reality or not(it’s not in my area or circle of friends, at least), but this isn’t a reality show. It’s a drama aimed at teen girls. It just seems like some older woman’s teen fantasy realized.
It just seems odd.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is pretty damn good. I like how it’s full of drama and fun at the same time. That definitely make it watchable and interesting. I’m hooked on it.
