UPDATED: Modern Family, meet Frickin’ Family. ABC has handed out a pilot order to My Frickin’ Family (previously Cowboys and Indians), a single-camera comedy from writer Erica Rivinoja. Additionally, the network has handed a pilot order to another single-camera family comedy, Bad Mom, from British writer-actress-comedienne Sharon Horgan and producer Aaron Kaplan.
Frickin’ Family, from ABC Studios and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, centers on two young parents whose lives change after they have a baby and the four grandparents with very different cultural backgrounds descend upon their lives to fight for the soul of their grandchild. Brillstein’s Peter Traugott is executive producing. Rivinoja’s credits include Grounded for Life and South Park.
Bad Mom, from ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment, centers on Julia, a single mom whose two kids had been raised largely by her mom. When her mom decides to get her life back, Julia has to do it alone. Horgan, co-creator/star of the BBC comedy series Pulling, is executive producing with Aaron Kaplan. She is also expected to play a co-lead on the show. This marks the fifth pilot order for Kaplan’s 19-month old Kapital Entertainment.

the script was called cowboys and indians…..much better title
What is with the constant Indian stuff on TV? Not trying to be racist, but every show has an Indian theme now.
so i take it it’s about an indian family and a family from the south? Any more details?
Call it whatever you like – Erica Rivinoja is hilarious, and this show will be, too.
I hope it’s not racist like Outsourced.
Totally compatible with Modern Family. Anything would be an improvement from that trash that still airs after Modern Family.
Cougar Town is NOT trash. It’s one of the best comedies on television right now.
i can’t tell if RJ is a master of sarcasm or just has awful taste.
I think the whole “family dramedy” is getting tiresome now. What is that, like 6 shows about some dysfunctional families on the same network?
Wow! Aaron Kaplan. A real dick issuing great. Beating all the fools at their own game.
Ha.
I am getting so sick of Aaron Kaplan taking credit for his writer’s work. How come it is okay for a manager to take a producing credit from their client? Isn’t it enough that they sold their project and took 10%!?!?!
Hey, altered. Wake the F up. Kaplan gets a producing fee now, which means that client keeps that 10%. Are you new to the business? His client probably trusts him to try and help sift what will undoubtedly be a batch of confusing and stupid notes – especially from that network. Welcome to the television business.
At least they’re from female voices.
Cowboys & Indians is a much better title. Either way the project is hysterical. Congrats to Erica!
JohnDoe, there’s nothing wrong with the “family dramedy”.. this is the same network that brought us “The Brady Bunch”, “Full House”, “Roseanne”, and “Home Improvement”…. family is part of ABC’s DNA.
If you’re not into it, then there’s other networks to watch like one that is dedicated to crime dramas…
Erica, REPRESENT!!!
So refreshing to see ABC buying pilots from women. Original voice. Now, keep going with that thought, ABC. Don’t stop, baby. KEEP GOING!!!
Sharon Horgan may be an original voice. Never heard of her. But now ABC will have to pair her off with a show runner who has more experience. It’ll be some poor bastard who has been in the business longer, trying to sell his own thing but will now have to walk this less experienced person through every step.
IF the pilot goes to series and IF she’s not a complete pain in arse who gets in her own way like most people with less experience, the syndication payoff ain’t what it used to be.
Congratulations, Sharon Horgan!
In an Industry that’s being run by “poor bastards”, it’s great to see a woman get her due, get her show on. Really, D.Agger? You’re gonna take the side of the “poor bastard” who’s probably rich beyond 90 percent of the population with his showrunning experience? Really?! Yeah, she might be inexperienced running shows, but so were the “poor bastards” as well. Who held their hand?
Point of information, Sharon Horgan is Irish, not British, although the vast majority of her work has been on British TV.
Erica is hilarious and sweet – a rare combo. Congrats!
Sharon’s script was absolutely terrible.
So the designation of women as freak????
Beware. Women.
Could we get less imaginative than MY FREAKIN’ FAMILY for a title? With titles like that ABCs lineup is going to be NEW BOY EVERY WEEK then ONE WACKY WORKPLACE followed by DOCTORS WHO CRY.
My Frickin Family sounds hilarious!!! Anytime you derive comedy from real situations that everyone can relate to, you have comedy gold.
