• It’s sorta amusing that whenever a remake comes along, there are so many ready to deride the lack of originality in Hollywood. But y’know, it’s not ALL “the people in charge” — it’s the audience. There is always a market for entertainment that is easy, simple and fun. Charlie’s Angels is representative of that. Put yourself in the position: if you have millions of people to feed, what do you do? Do you trot out original, edgy, smart programming to feed your own sensibilities, or… do you try to give the people what they want? If you have the chance to use something that worked before — it’s a safe bet. You make money, you keep your job. You tentpole that stuff, hopefully to build enough good strength to your foundation to support the more experimental stuff here and there, until one of them catches on and also becomes “tried and true.” Deride if you must, but remember, most people will eat and enjoy “vanilla” well enough, and no matter how much you personally prefer “Rocky Road,” you still know that it won’t go over as well to the masses.

  • Excellent point. But I wonder, sometimes, if we lived in a different universe, where network programmers *only* offered rocky road, could you ween people off of vanilla? Might they not discover they prefer rock road?

    I know it’s not really a feasible experiment, but I wonder if you can change people’s tastes by offering them better.
