EXCLUSIVE: There are few hotter projects in Hollywood right now than Twentieth Century Fox’s macabre 3D Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter based on the Seth Grahame-Smith novel (he also wrote the script) that will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Timur, Tim Burton, and Jim Lemley. The studio has set a June 22, 2012 release for the film and has been focused on casting since November. Now we can tell you the list of actors who’ll be screentesting for the role of young Abe Lincoln this week and next: Benjamin Walker, James D’Arcy, Adrien Brody, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Josh Lucas. It’s a very interesting mix of semi-knowns and unknowns, stage and screen vets.
Twentieth won the project after a hard fought auction that included Sony and Paramount and Universal and Summit. Bekmambetov and Burton liked it so much they used their own money to option the book earlier this year, and Fox had existing relationships with both filmmakers – Timur dating back to when the studio talent-spotted him in Russia and released his first movie Night Watch worldwide. The movie is a 3D re-imagining of Lincoln’s life that depicts the 16th president as an axe-throwing, highly accomplished killer of vampires, an obsession of his since those bloodsuckers supposedly took the life of his mother. Taking revenge, Lincoln wreaks havoc on the vampires and their slave-owning protectors. Only in Hollywood would such wild fantasy with the reputation of one of America’s greatest Presidents be in such demand. Fox wanted the project so badly that when the filmmakers came onto the lot, the studio had bloody axes and bloody footprints strewn about, and arranged for a bugle player in a Confederate uniform playing “Taps” to accompany them to the meeting with studio executives. The script has already been written by the book’s author when it was put out for bid, and we heard widely that every studio was impressed with the whole pitch, as well as the prospect of having the next directorial effort by Bekmambetov and a take honed by Burton. The only reticence was the ask: the film’s budget is a reasonable $69 million, but Deadline was told that the first dollar gross request was just north of 25% (insiders said it wasn’t quite that high). The final deal was rich. But Fox, led by production president Emma Watts, now has a major tentpole teed up.

EXTREMELY excited to see ben walkers name on that list
Me too! Ben Walker was incredible in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
Excited for this film and—
Pride and Prejudice & Zombies (Mike White directing is interesting)
and the comic book adaptation of Edge of the Unknown (Houdini, Lovecraft and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hunting a serial killer).
Seems like H’wood is getting somewhat original.
Getting Original by making movies out of published novels?? Interesting idea of what original means…
Wow, this has disaster written all over it.
the script is extremely average. as far as vampire movies go, it has serious conflicting positions – some vampires can fly through trees at 60 mph and jump 100 yards at a time, move with blurring speed in short distances, have the strength of 20 men, but somehow abe lincoln, who is human, can fight in hand-to-hand combat with the oldest and strongest of them. there are so many inconsistencies, that it is laughable. none of the mythology or lore is consistent with what we have all come to know and love, and… whatever, the script sucks. i hope marketing can save this fiasco…
You do understand this is a movie right? And that vampires are not real? What happened to settling down and just enjoying a story in and of itself? Geez.
Olyphant certainly has the action chops, Brody has the nose, Walker has already played a President, and D’Arcy has the period drama chops.
I did not realize Josh Lucas was still acting. Not a diss, just haven’t seen him since … was it that Poseidon remake?
It was a really fun book and could be a really fun movie. Olyphant or Brody would both be excellent choices, even though it’s kind of tough thinking of them vying for the same role.
Tim Olyphant is the only real candidate in that ENTIRE list.
He also just happens to be perfec the part, IMHO.
*perfect for the part
James D’Arcy would be amazing as Lincoln – great at action and full of class…
Liam Nesson or NO ONE. Make Spielberg jealous for not keeping him in his Lincoln project.
Tim olyphant is a tv actor…will never be a film actor no matter how hard Fox tries. I mean the simple fact that no other studio would hire him for a role like this clearly means he is being forced on the filmmakers by the studio.
He was really good in THE CRAZIES. Definitely has movie star potential.
tim is not a movie star, but he has been great in everything he does, and frankly, he is a stand-up guy. angelina jolie and johnny depp are two of the biggest stars in the world and their last movie completely tanked, so let’s not make the movie business all about the movie stars again, just to throw salt on really solid actors… sometimes the movie will make the star… not this one, but sometimes… twilight anyone? let’s give tim a break. he’s put in some good work.
I think Josh Lucas should be ruled out simply because he’s on;y 5’11.We need Abe to tower over the other characters.
Judging by height alone, 6’3 actors like Walker, D’Arcy and Jackson-Cohen are good candidates.
Looking forward to the scene where the slaves are serving their masters in the mansion and then the vampires eat all the slaves and then it’s revealed that slavery was actually nothing more than a vampire conspiracy.
That is actually in the script. TRUE HILARITY. Maybe they can cast Downey to play a slave in blackface. Because irony and pushing boundaries and genius and Oscar.
That actually sounds pretty, pretty, pretty dumb. And kinda offensive?
I have to disagree with that interpretation of the story in the book. The vampires take advantage of a primary aspect of slavery which is that slaves are not equal and are just property of their owners. The owners use slaves to bargain with the vampires for power and money.
Sounds awesome!!
Olyphant is fantastic! Brody…. hmmmm not so much. Sorry, I cannot watch him in anything.
This script was an outright disaster, really truly horrible. Good luck.
i though Eric Bana was being courted
Yes, I liked the idea of Eric Bana also. Good in Abe Lincoln makeup
Is it just me or are none of these guys the 6’5 Abe Lincoln frame in order to pull this off. After Predators I am preying they dont make the same mistake and hire Brody, he was laughable. The script however is amazing for this film and cant wait to see it.
Yes, there’s some touchy territory concerning Lincoln but also the South and Slavery.
I hope Hollywood doesn’t wimp out and uses it all.
Olyphant please! (Just not Brody.)
Did you see the cast they are looking at? This is not worthy of a studio film, this is a B list cast. Suggest selling the intl to a small indy company and moving on. (Unless you get an A list cast or someone on the rise)
Olyphant’s name has also been removed, by the looks of things? Shame, as I’d have absolutely loved to see him play the part.
“The movie is a 3D re-imagining of Lincoln’s life . . .”
Fer cryin’ out loud! Is there no end in sight to this overuse of 3D?
I’m excited for all these mashups Abe Linicoln Vampire Hunter, FDR American Badass, Pride and Prejudice vs Zombies, they all just sound fun. Better than another rom-com on the weekends with the Mrs.!
What about Matt King a la BRONSON? Check out his look in that film… total Honest Abe.
Benjamin Walker for president!!!!!!!
I would reach out to Daniel day Lewis…why not?
