Broadcasting & Cable today published a long interview with Disney/ABC TV Chief Anne Sweeney (subscription required), and here is what’s interesting:
– The “one piece of talent” on the air whom she doesn’t have currently and wants? Why, the Viscount Of Vapidity: “I was just thinking about Ryan Seacrest, but we just had him for New Year’s Eve. He’s a terrific talent. I think he is the hardest working person in television — I have never seen anyone so committed and do such a great job in every single venue. He produces Jamie Oliver for us, he does New Year’s Eve. He’s a great talent.”
– Jimmy Kimmel has “made a tremendous amount of progress in 7 years”.
– ABC can continue to operate the news division without a 24-hour cable component or merging its news operation. “I think there are many different opportunities out there right now, not just for news but for entertainment as well. If you look at what ABC News did when we collaborated during the election with Facebook, that’s a very interesting distribution platform for news. There are many platforms to consider for news, and I think we need to think expansively as a news division going forward and not limit ourselves to thinking of news as just a broadcast and/or cable play.” But Sweeney acknowledges that “we’ll certainly be talking to [Bloomberg] again”.
– There won’t be as much entertainment vs news division head-butting between Ben Sherwood and Paul Lee as there was between David Westin and Steve McPherson. “Early on in Paul’s tenure, the Chilean miners were trapped and the world was waiting to see them emerge, and I think Paul’s background at BBC News really came into play. He ran down the hall with [ABC scheduling chief] Jeff Bader and said, ‘What does News need? These men are going to be coming back to us tonight, and what should we be doing?’ I think Paul’s news background will prove very helpful to Ben. And I think since Ben has spent time in the entertainment space — let’s not forget, he wrote a couple of books and one was made into movie — Ben does understand the world that Paul is operating in as well.”

Has she said anything about Brian Frons and her dying daytime soaps division?
Yeah I agree with that question about OUR soaps. Why did she cancel our soaps. The soaps have been in our families for generations. My mother has watched the ABC soaps since the first day they aired. Why take our soaps away for a crummy food show etc? Why? Why? At cant they at least put them on the soap net. Damn that’s what the soap net is for … Its to air our favorite soaps. We have enough crummy shows on the air as it is we don’t need anymore, especially to take the place of our family soaps. To us soap fans the characters are more like family than just soap stars.
the Viscount Of Vapidity? Somebody’s a bit jealous, aren’t they? Time to dial it back.
Thats funny. She has the hardest working guy in TV in Ty Pennington who has been successful with Extreme Makeover in selling shows in the UK, Canada and developing shows for cable her yet she covets someone who produces The Kardashians and that Mama’s boys show on Fox…..wonder when his contract is up and if Ls Moonves is looking for someone
I’m sure Kimmel made progress. He’s awful! This guy is on the list of funny in a room of 10 number 7. His looks are 7. His wit is 8. His interviewing skills are 9.
Fallon is so far ahead of him there is no comparison.
Kimmel started as the tieless guy and now is the tie goat.
Just a joke that ABC doesn’t pluck an unknown instead of Kimmel. He is a bore.
Thank you kindly.
Please bring back the show The GAtes – I loved it – it was awesome – Why would you take it off the air.
You Fucks are stupid – you don’t know a good show when it’s on – just leave it alone – Just leave it be – nobody want’s to see dana delany and more er type shit shows – Give us back our Gates – it was great!!!!
It’s like you FUCKS shouldn’t even have those jobs – you clearly don’t know what the Fuck you are doing!!!!!!
PUT THE SHOW BACK ON!!!
We, as in our family and friends are continuing our boycotting of ALL THINGS ABC and Disney for their having canceled “One Life to Live” and “All My Children.”
In response to these cancellation policy decisions, decisions made by Disney’s Robert Iger and ABC’s Anne Sweeney and Brian Frons, ABC is witnessing half of the Daytime audience fan base flee its network programming entirely, as some acutely perceptive observers many months ago had well predicted would be the tragic outcome.
In an honorable business culture, these three individuals would have already committed a form of corporate “hari kari” for having offended and injured as many parties as they have through their rank incompetence, poor business decision making, and despicable treatment of their customers/loyal viewers of many decades duration.
And, moreover, for their manifest classless crude abuse, deception, and disrespect they rained on the ever talented casts and crews of “One Life to Live” and “All My Children.” Iger, Frons, and Sweeney are disgraces to the honorable traditions that have historically prevailed in the American entertainment and broadcasting industries, and the latter Ms. Sweeney in having been complicit to the extreme in Mr. Frons’ notorious in the public record, chronic repeated ageist and sexist conduct, is a disgrace to the American womens movement that tragically paved the opportunity for her; powerfully witness her wrecking operations in a Bain Capital-like looting fashion of a great American storytelling genre birthed by writer Agnes Nixon that sustained primetime programming on this country’s networks for decades.
Then, the three of them, Iger, Sweeney and Frons went on to replace such iconic American classics (with millions of LOYAL daytime viewers) with junk programming a la The Spew and The Revulsion in further debasing the American contemporary television medium. Shame on the three of them and let damn be done! ABC/Disney: Release the rights now being held “hostage” to those shows and allow another network or cable provider to bring these shows back to their audiences. For once, do the right thing and cease your contemptuous conduct toward your customer base that is inimical to every sound business practice. Begin, then, to advertise ABC in a positive public light.
