It looks like with Spartacus, Starz not only has a breakout series on its hands but also a solid franchise. On Friday night, the premiere episode of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, drew some 1.1 million viewers for its debut 10 PM airing, 66% higher than the original series’ premiere a year ago, and 1.9 million viewers combined for the 10 PM and 11 PM runs, 77% above the debut of the mothership series. However, Gods of the Arena couldn’t break the ratings records set during the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which is slated to begin production on its long-delayed Season 2 with a new actor, Liam McIntyre, replacing ailing Andy Whitfield.

kicked ass, right on every note. fun to see the characters younger and the seeds that were sowed last season planted. and no, i am not a plant. best series last year, bar none.
I welcome the franchise back and ‘Gods of the Arena’ did not disappoint.
Chris Albrecht is a genius! He will make that network a big winner as he did HBO!!
What’s the subscriber base at Starz? I know a million people doesn’t necesarily mean a million subs, but what does it really mean? Can’t gage this number. Feels small to me.
Those numbers seem right on par with Showtime for the most part which has a larger subscriber base than Starz does. I’d say Chris’ gamble on hour-longs rather than comedies might pay off, although to be fair, why he put a show like Party Down on a Friday night, makes you wonder.
Chris wasn’t in charge when the second season of Party Down was ordered. However, he already took over when PD aired in April.
Amazing how a glitzy modern TV series can gut all the blood and life from a story about a slave that rose up against Rome to fight for freedom and make it look like a silly contemporary soap opera. I’ll take Howard Fast and Kubrick (even Tony Curtis) over this sad commentary on today’s over-sensationalized cable programming.
Spartacus – absolutely the BEST !!! Don’t ‘cha think that Lucy
could possibly still be alive???
Yes, of course. We saw her fingers moving. (Plus, she probably didn’t lose the baby either.)
The traitorous former gladiator guy is going to rescue her from the rubble, I’ll bet, because he knows if he takes care of her his fortune will be assured. She’ll try to get her vengeance on Crixus by doing something bad with that slave he’s in love with b/c only Lucy knows where she is, at the moment.
Props to Dustin Clare (McLeod’s Daughters). The “soap” stuff is sadly thrown in for the same reason there was the arena in Rome. It’s to attract a larger crowd. But it still works overall because it isn’t some lame cop/doc by the numbers pap in which every single plot point is predictable, including female police wearing stilettos, chasing bad guys. AND more of Lucy Lawless never hurt anybody. . ..
great story line but to me all the porn spoils it. I watched the one episode of gods of the arena and I found it digusting…haven’t watched it since. why can’t you be creative and leave some of it to the imagination like the great film makers of the past.
Great reaction to the unfortunate cancer ailment of Andy Whitefield. I salute your creativity!
