Yesterday was a big day for NBC ratings-wise. The first original Saturday Night Live of the year, hosted by Jim Carrey, drew a 7.8 rating/18 share in the metered-market households, a season high for the veteran late-night sketch show and the highest rating since the big Betty White/Jay-Z episode on May 8. I personally felt Carrey’s physical comedy talents could have been put to better use with stronger material, though he made the most of what he was given with engaging performances. Below is the show’s opening skit, a Black Swan send-up. On the East Coast, SNL was delayed 15 minutes by the overrun of the Jets-Colts NBC Wild Card playoff game (20.8 overnight rating/33 share), which posted the best primetime Wild Card rating ever (The NFL became airing Wild Card games in primetime in 2002). Overall, it was the highest-rated Wild Card Saturday game in 11 years. Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks victory over the New Orleans Saints earlier in the day (18.3/33) logged the best Wild Card Game 1 overnight rating in 20 years. And the two-game average was the best in 16 years. One amusing detail. While Carrey opened his SNL monologue with “How ’bout those Jets, New York?,” New Yorkers actually didn’t watch the game that much. While New Orleans and Seattle were the top 2 markets for the Saints-Seahawks game and Indianapolis was the top market for the Jets-Colts game, New York, which has the largest potential audience in the country, was only ranked 20th for the game.
The football games and SNL all featured promos for tonight’s two-hour premiere of NBC’s first midseason series, The Cape. With such a big viewer turnout yesterday, the new drama got pretty good last-minute promotion. Will that translate into big opening numbers tonight?

I wish they advertised The Cape as “From the Network that cancelled Heroes”. I still can’t believe The Cape is a real show. If I don’t look it will go away.
Shouldn’t it read, “The Network that should have put Heroes out of its misery after season 1″?
The Cape looks kind of like a joke but at the same time, I could see it being a fun show for a cable channel like Sy-Fy. It kind of reminds me of the V reboot; even with strong premiere numbers it seems like a show that probably won’t get (or, in V’s case, shouldn’t have gotten) a second season.
the black swan spoof was better than the actual movie.
You are an idiot.
Totally agree with aristocat, and I didn’t think the spoof was very funny. I found “Black Swan” painfully overwrought and self-serious.
Self serious? The movie was campy as hell.
Okay, so I guess this confirms that “The Cape” IS a real show and not some horrible, early April Fools joke.
That said, I tuned in to SNL just because of Jim Carrey and I was still disappointed. That show has gone to an unfunny place far, far away.
The show was absolutely horrendous. The Mike Bloomberg impersonation was horrid and the show went downhill from there. Carrey’s “fortune-teller” schtick was cringe-worthy, but sublime compared to the “funhouse ride” and “the folkie band” thing.
Even the one usual bright spot this year, Weekend Update fell flat, as they couldn’t make light of the tragedy in Tucson, and so had to just ignore it.
It’s like it’s the 70s again and everyone’s strung out on coke. (The difference then was that most of the audience was too) Unbeliveable that a show with that many writers actually believe this stuff they’ve been doing recently is actually funny.
And this isn’t a “SNL needs to be canceled” screed either. It’s just time for Lorne to take a good hard look at the crap he’s been doing and get some new blood on the staff.
I’m just happy to see a network series (well, any series, to be honest) trying to do a superhero show with a character who actually wears a costume and uses a secret ID, vs. things like Heroes or No Ordinary Family where it’s all “real people dealing with real problems with the powers as metaphors” type of stuff (not to mention Smallville, where Superman has been hemming and hawing about becoming Superman for ten years now).
I’ve seen a lot of TV teasers for The Cape, but there hasn’t been NBC oversaturation (yet). They’ve probably picked a good night for the premiere, since there probably won’t be competition with football games. If The Cape is intresting tonight there might be a lot of folks who’ll be willing to give it a chance until it gets too predictable or boring. If nothing else, this could be a real breakout piece for Keith David, who for some time has deserved to get a lot more public name recognition than he’s received so far. At least, I think so.
They should have let Jim write the material on the show last night. It was obvious it was written for him. At least HE was funny in the skits. Everyone else…not so much. The Black Swan sketch was funny, and the Alan Thicke was hilarious.
I agree wholeheartedly , after the first season of ” Heroes”, the show nosedived in quality. It had so much potential !
Someone needs to desperately reign in Jim Carrey ( also Robin Williams) . His over- the – top acting style is a major nuance , and it is not very funny. Jim is immensely talented , but he needs to realize less is more. Anne Hathaway is still the best SNL host this season ( or maybe in the last couple of years). Anne better get an Emmy nomination for her brilliant turn on SNL.
This may seem like true irony, but Jim Carrey over-acts too much on SNL. If he had just dialed it down a bit, his sketches would have been twice as funny. He was trying too hard and it looked desperate, like he was trying to prove he’s not old and can still do the Ace Ventura style bits.
The sketch in the amusement park tunnel was genius, although it didn’t have an ending. The Wimberville Brothers?
And Nasim Pedrad has an unbelievable body, mrowrrr…
Yeah…
Jim Carrey reminded me of his anything for a laugh desperation on In Living Color”. I liked that, just this once.
When I hear “The Cape”, I think “Cape Fear”…thinking of it as “the cape” as in costume…i think rip-off of “The Mask”.
worst SNL in recent history. carrey was awful, as was the writing. not one laugh, including weekend update which has been on a downward spiral for more than a year now.
The Cape looks AWFUL.
starting with a commercial they’ve aired in two other episodes is a bit lacking…
You people are weird. When networks don’t come up with something innovative you are the ones that slam them. Not saying its a great show, but your basing it off looks. Who would of thought a show about 5 housewives would work, or even an island of people, or even a show about a politicians wife. Let’s just wait & see until tomorrow morning when the numbers come in.
A show about a bunch of housewives? Only an idiot would think it WOULDN’T work? Who do you think watches TV?
Part of the entertainment industry is that your opening is very important and most of that success is based on how people respond to your ads and marketing. So while it may seem unfair, judging a show based on ads is part of the game and The Cape’s ads haven’t won over many people that I know.
And in this case, I don’t think it’s really all that innovative. It’s a superhero show. They’ve been done before and they’ll be done again. But based on the ads, this one looks incredibly cheesy (and most of the reviews seem to support this.)
SNL was still the best in a long time…
Always nice when they have hosts who aren’t afraid to try new stuff.
For the crew and staff of “The Cape”, they better hope that translates into a big turn-out. One can only imagine Greenbladt is standing at the door, sharpening his battle axe.
Jim Carrey’s physical talents were on display in the Black Swan satire, The sex positions sketch & as the mechanical creature in the amusement park ride. Were we watching the same episode? I thought it was a funnier than usual SNL.
It’s always funny to hear people gripe about SNL because it’s been awful for a long time. It’s kinda like Leno; does talking about how unfunny it is make it any better?
I so hope for every show that finally makes it to air..(so much work put into it)to be good…get an audience…simply be pure entertainment in a world that now desperatrly so needs that. But “THE CAPE” is not only bad… we’ve been there, done that. not a good show. Not to mention the exececutive behind the series,Llyod Brauin has questionable ethics. Ever read “Desperate Networks” anyone??…if it doesn;t work on NBC,Braun can secretly go berhind NBC’s back and try to sell it unbeknownst to anyone else to ABC…The same thing he did on “Lost”. Hard to root for these type of people
Yes, Jim is one of the best physical comedians , and he can handle impressions. But, his over-the-top acting style is unbearable to watch. But, I will give him credit, he did kill it with the creepy carnival ride sketch- even though Taran Killem stole the that sketch from Carrey.
Cant wait to watch the cape..i hope it does well for NBC..they could use a hit..
I won’t engage in the debate on the merits of SNL because of a conflict of interest: Jim Carrey is a distant relative (my mother and his aunt were first cousins; you do the math). But I will point out that the photo Jim was holding in the final extro card was of his late father Percy, who abandoned a career as a jazz sax player to become an accountant.
Just when I thought SNL couldn’t get more boring… Whatever Jim Carrey had to offer was utterly wasted and the whole show was one long snoozefest that kept dragging on for what seemed like aeons.
I wonder if the ratings for the Jets game were higher in NJ than NY. There’s most likely more Jets fans in Jersey. You know, that’s where they play.
Well, uh, so do the
Midgets, Giants. But essentially you’re correct; Gang Green appeals to the Jerseyites mainly.
Saw The Cape at Comicon. It is truly bad. NBC is going to hit an all-time low with this one. I predict it will be cancelled at the first commercial break.
