EXCLUSIVE: In the summer of 2008, Flashpoint became the first of several Canadian series picked up around the writers strike to premiere on a U.S. network, CBS. It became the first and only Canadian series success story here until the debut of Rookie Blue on ABC this summer. Now, Flashpoint has become the first of the Canadian imports to land a U.S. syndication deal in a complex arrangement with CBS and ION that will allow both Flashpoint‘s current U.S. network home, CBS, and its new one, ION, to air originals of the procedural about an elite tactical unit.
CBS currently has 6 unaired episodes from Flashpoint‘s third season that it had been keeping as a backup but
won’t need this season as CBS’ drama lineup has performed well. Meanwhile, because of the success of the series in Canada, its broadcaster there, CTV, has already greenlighted an 18-episode fourth season. CBS will pick up 7 of the 18 episodes from Season 4 to air with the 6 unaired Season 3 segments for a 13-episode run during the summer. Soon after that, ION is expected to begin airing all 51 episodes of the show that will have aired on CBS. Additionally, ION will premiere the remaining 11 episodes of Flashpoint’s fourth season.
Flashpoint will feel right at home on ION whose drama lineup consists entirely of CBS off-network series: Criminal Minds, Without a Trace and Ghost Whisperer. (The deals for 2 of them, Criminal Minds and Ghost Whisperer, were made by CBS TV Distribution.) Additionally, ION recently aired several Canadian drama series, Durham County, The Border and The Guard, which all made their U.S. premieres on the broadcast network. Flashpoint, which stars Enrico Colantoni, is produced by Avamar Entertainment and Pink Sky Entertainment. The show was created by Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern, with Anne Marie La Traverse and Bill Mustos serving as executive producers.

This news made my Friday! I’m a HUGE fab of “Flashpoint” and am thrilled we’ll be getting new episodes in the U.S.
YES YES YES THIS HAS MADE MY DAY FLASHPOINT ON CBS AND ION THAT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU JUST HOW MUCH THE STATES LOVE FLASHPOINT. PLEASE DON’T LET THIS BE A DREAM.
The USA love their FLASHPOINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such an amazing show — puts me and the whole family to sleep…
It helps not to be comatose.
The best news I’ve personally had allo of 2011. Thank you both CBS and ION. Smart planning as show is exceptional on many levels! Not sure I can wait for summer, and I hope CBS picks up ALL the shows!
Really? Perhaps it’s because I used to be married to a cop, or perhaps it’s because I have a healthy amount of common sense, but the pilot episode was such complete BS technically and dramatically that I woke up the neighborhood yelling at the TV. If you think this is how real cops behave, in Canada or the U.S., there is something fundamentally wrong with you.
Great cast, god awful series.
Maybe you should make your own series and see if it gets picked up for syndication.
I guess you feel that there is something seriously wrong with viewers around the world who so enjoy FP. The show has such positive messaging and, they are action-packed and highly entertaining. You are free to watch what you like. It’s just sad you feel the need to criticize such a brilliant Canadian show that is embraced around the world.
Seeing how the pilot episode was actually based on an actual incident that occurred in Toronto (an ETF sniper was required to shoot a hostage-taker – on live TV, no less) I think your position that you know all the technical aspects of police procedure by dint of once being married to a police officer doesn’t hold water.
Were you married to an ETF officer in Canada?
And I’m not sure why you’re upset, anyway. Television exaggerates and dramatizes things so that the entertainment value is heightened. Who on earth wants to watch a police ‘procedural’ if we’re actually taken through all the mundane ‘procedure’?
As TV viewers, we know we’re being taken on a ride, and we know a lot of it doesn’t actually happen. Besides: how accurate do you want TV shows to be? Show all the ‘trade secrets’, and the criminals will know just what to do to beat the system.
Stick to watching C.O.P.S., then, if Flashpoint doesn’t entertain you.
You sound like my wife… she has been a nurse for almost 25 years, with the past 10 of those spent in an ER. Anytime we watch a medical drama on TV, she spends a good amount of time pointing out all the screw ups. “That wouldn’t happen! She’s using the wrong gauge needle for that! That monitor isn’t even hooked up!”
Me? I just try and enjoy any show I watch for what it is – entertainment. I think most people know that what they see on TV is a skewed view of real life.
After being a nurse for 25 years I won’t even watch a medical show.
If everything were “true to life” would be very boring.
EXCELLENT NEWS! Flashpoint is my favourite show and one of the best shows on TV (if not the best!)
Flashpoint is one of the best shows on TV…Great decision by CBS. Flashpoint is one of several Canadian shows that are top-notch (Rookie Blue, for one)
Very strange arrangement with CBS and Ion for this show. I watch Flashpoint and think it’s one of the better procedurals that CBS airs. However, I think it sucks that CBS treats this show as the bastard step child.
CBS came into this treating it as cheap filler for the gap caused by the writers’ strike. I don’t think they planned on it being popular. The way they have broadcast it is just messed up. What is worse is that at times CTV in Canada has followed CBS’s insane scheduling and has held back episodes for months. These 6 that are being broadcast in Canada in January and February (and which will be shown on CBS this coming summer) were shown late last year as part of the show’s international first run syndication. I am grateful that CBS is passing the show off to ION because then there will be no more delays in broadcast until CBS feels like it with CTV being somewhat compelled to go along with CBS’ schedule. That it is also a second run syndication is just impressive though it is a bit odd to syndicate only 62 episodes. It just goes to show that despite being hard to find many Americans love Flashpoint
ION and its predecessor PAX seem to have a fondness for CTV shows (PAX co-produced Little Men, Mysterious Ways, and Twice In A Lifetime) so i hope that Flashpoint’s new American home will be welcoming to the show.
this is just the beginning for flashpoint with the syndication market. wait two years from now when it will go into the wider syndiction market
I hope that ION TV will pick up Guard and flashpoint if they do I will watch them I have watch guard but I never saw flaspoint I am a avid watcher of ION because I watch Ghost Whisperer and without a trace but I will not watch the guard or flashpoint if they are being shown on CBS because that station is longer allowed in my living room
I can’t believe that a show like Flashpoint with their excellent writing and story lines and the most outstanding acting to come in a long time that CBS had to have even taken a day to realize Flashpoint would be another gem in their crown.
Hooray! This show deserved to continue, especially in counterpoint to much of the dreck that passes for entertainment on CBS, like “Survivor”, “CSI-Miami” and “The Mental Patient…. err… Mentalist”.
Now if they’d only get REAL smart and bring back “Cold Case”… ahh, not even I think will heppen. Mo Ghaddafi will be on “Dancing with the Stars” before THAT happens.
Thanks for the good news!
Cold case on ion!!
