CBS has made another drama pilot pickup, giving the green light to Rookies, an ensemble cop show from The Color of Money writer Richard Price. The project, about six NYPD rookies who balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the streets of Manhattan, is executive produced by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal through their Tribeca production banner as well as Price. CBS TV Studios, where Tribeca has a TV deal, is producing. This would mark a second NY-based cop drama series for CBS, which also has freshman Blue Bloods, in addition to forensic procedural CSI: NY. Feature writer Price ventured into series TV with a writing gig on the HBO drama The Wire. The order for Rookies follows the recent pickup of 2 other drama pilots by CBS, Ringer, toplined by Sarah Michelle Gellar, and an untitled supernatural medical drama from writer Susannah Grant.

Normally I’d have something snide to say, but I’m a HUGE DeNiro fan (who isn’t?)…so, best of luck even though TV doesn’t really need another cop drama.
So…a show exactly like ROOKIE BLUE, then? Way to be original *rolls eyes*
Have you ever read Richard Price? This won’t be soapy/glossy made in Canadia rookie cop fare.
STFU, Sarah. We’re talking Richard Price here. He wipes his butt with garbage like Rookie Blue.
To the comments: But it’s RICHARD PRICE. Of The Wire. And his crime novels. And his films…
Doesn’t matter how brilliant Richard Price is. This is going to be on CBS, so it will most definitely turn into something that fits in with the rest of their shows — middle of the road. Remember it’s not HBO, it’s just TV.
This is great news because I am a big fan of shows about doctors and cops and there just aren’t enough of those on TV. Give us more!
ENOUGH COP SHOWS ALREADY!!!!!!
How can I audition?
Cop procedurals on CBS?!
Not to be wishy-washy, but I’m with those who say that it’s weird that CBS would emulate a Canadian import summer show on ABC with what sounds like a show that belongs on sister network The CW…
…while at the same time, I agree that it’s Richard Price, so one has to believe the script is amazing (that said, Richard Price writing for this demo – presumably 20-somethings, a demo he’s never really written for – is a big red flag; sort of like asking Wambaugh to do the same).
More interesting and worth watching will be to see if this is a further step in the welcome direction that Les and Nina began with Good Wife and continued with Blue Bloods, which is infusing their standard procedurals with serialized elements, because this show sounds like a pure soap.
(P.S.: I’m not comparing Wife and Bloods quality-wise; Wife is obviously superior in every way.)
Have you never read Price? Cops won’t be just cops. It’ll transcend cops.
The Wire is one of the best series ever. Enough said.
Good to see De Niro taking time away from making crappy movies to devote to crappy tv shows.
I hope it lives up to the high standards set by Hawaii 50.
It will be exactly like The Wire, no doubt. That is what the CBS audience is looking for.
A cop procedural? Sure. But what we really need is a show that focuses on another segment of our workforce: the lawyers. Or maybe even the doctors. And the supernatural hijinks that ensue at their places of employment.
CBS would have cancelled The Wire in three weeks due to low ratings.
