CBS’ hot comedy series The Big Bang Theory will continue on the network through the 2013-14 season with a big three-year renewal for the Warner Bros. TV-produced series. The deal is reminiscent of CBS’ 3-year pickup of WBTV’s other hit CBS comedy, Two and a Half Men, two years ago, and this time, the studio didn’t have to sue the network to get it. (In December 2008, WBTV filed a $49 million lawsuit against CBS over Men license fees and production-cost reimbursements, and the March 2009 3-year renewal of Men and 2-year pickup for Big Bang factored into the settlement of that lawsuit.
A lot changed since March 2009 for Big Bang, which at the time was a sophomore comedy that provided CBS with a solid 8 PM anchor. The following season, the comedy exploded in the ratings behind Men at 9:30 PM. And this fall, it successfully migrated to Thursday night, quickly becoming the top-rated series on the most lucrative night of television. The series’ rising importance to CBS has factored into the big new license fee for the show, said to be north of $4 million per episode, more than quadrupling the comedy’s current license fee. (Also, the CBS-WBTV deal for Big Bang reportedly doesn’t include a deficit recovery clause like the one in the Men pact that led to the legal action.)
The renewal at CBS was also a no-brainer for WBTV, which has a lot riding on the longevity of Big Bang after netting more than $2 million per-episode in syndication sales in May. Taking the series to another network could’ve jeopardized the series’ long-term prospects as, in today’s environment, multicamera comedies work best and last the longest on CBS.
Here is CBS’ release on the pickup:
CBS Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television have reached a multi-year broadcast agreement for the top-rated, critically acclaimed comedy, THE BIG BANG THEORY, it was announced today by Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment, and Peter Roth, President, Warner Bros. Television. The agreement renews THE BIG BANG THEORY for an additional three years, extending it through the 2013-2014 season.
“It doesn’t take a theoretical physicist to see why this show is a BIG part of our comedy future,” said Nina Tassler. “From ratings to critical acclaim to pop culture buzz, it’s struck a chord on all levels. The creative genius of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and the on-camera talents of an amazing young ensemble have created a comedy that will entertain viewers for a long time. We’re proud to partner with Warner Bros. on another highly successful, long-running comedy.”
“We are delighted and grateful that CBS has once again rewarded THE BIG BANG THEORY with a multiyear renewal,” said Peter Roth. ”This is a testament to the inspired and brilliant work of the show’s entire creative team, and we look forward to continuing this highly successful partnership.”
THE BIG BANG THEORY, which premiered in September 2007, had been part of CBS’s top-rated Monday comedy block for the past three seasons. It finished 2009-2010 as primetime’s #1 scripted series in adults 18-49 and the #2 comedy among viewers. Currently in its fourth season, THE BIG BANG THEORY has successfully transitioned to its new Thursday time period (8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT), emerging as the night’s dominant comedy in viewers and adults 18-49. It has also helped launch a second night of comedy for the Network. THE BIG BANG THEORY is averaging 13.89 million viewers (+7% versus the year ago time period), 4.7/14 in adults 18-49 (+15%) and 5.9/16 in adults 25-54 (+16%).

Wow, three more seasons (at least). That’s quite a vote of confidence. Big Bang is my favorite show. Let’s hope it maintains its quality for 3 more years. Very happy news though.
I tried to watch it a few weeks ago. It was so dumb, and so broadly played, I had to pick my jaw up from the floor with my hands and carry it out of the room.
Obviously you do not have enough brains to appreciate good TV. Go back and re-watch your collection of Sesame Street tapes.
…burn?
This comment is funnier than anything that’s every been on the show. Not enough brains? Really? So now BBT is super smart? Does that mean 2.5 Men is, also? Man, those current network four cameras sure are smart!
I like(d) The Sopranos, Seinfeld, Taxi, Family Guy, Boardwalk Empire. But I just don’t have enough brains to enjoy BBT. Nope. I like all the really stupid shows I just listed.
This is what kills me about the majority of comedy on TV and movies these days. I appreciate dumb jokes sometimes like everyone, but when did pure stupidity become equal to comedy? Is there now such thing as “This show is too smart to be funny?” What??!!??
This is one bang that sure is big! You might even say that there’s a lot of buck for the Bang! Congrats to Chuck Lorre and all the writers and cast and Peter Roth! May the theory of this Big Bang prove to be as everlasting as the Big Bang Theory that explains the universe’s existence, while being as spiritual as the theory of intelligent design that many of our friends in religious communities adhere to. I like this show more than any sitcom since Duet!
I love Big Bang Theory! Very cleverly written. Now, on to another important topic: Save The Defenders!! I love that show and if it gets cancelled I will cry
I totally agree with u! we have it to in holland and we love it!!
3 seasons or more would be very nice, I cant wait untill they bring m out!
I think the biggest success of this show is that it somehow manages to stay on the air. It.Is.Horrible. I dunno, maybe the problem lies with me, since so many people seem to love this pos. I seriously don’t get it. I’ve tried to give it a chance, and I always end up getting frustrated with basically every facet of the show. The writing isn’t bad by any means – but it’s not funny at all, I mean come on.
It’s not them…….it’s you.
I feel the same way about Modern Family. Shhhh… please don’t tell on me.
Still mourning “According to Jim”?
Great move. The show reminds me how solid actors can sit in a room any make anyone laugh. No extravagance needed. Outside of the Penny role losing some big time steam this ship is rolling.
It’s a show about smart people…made for smart people… IF you don’t get the humor… There is a reason…
Really? You are basing intelligence on whether or people think a sitcom is funny or not? Are you serious? Nope…you’re just stupid.
You stick to your “smart people” telemivison on CBS while I’s continues to gets stupid on dem showz on such networks as Hiztory or Diskovery channelz.
You moron.
wow, defensive much? With some of this stuff I’ve seen on this show, you really do need to be familiar with what they’re talking about to get the joke. So it’s not so much about intelligence as being well read and aware of the world around you. And are you claiming history and discovery channels have the real intelligent programming? Because every time I turn on the history channel they’re seems to be another sensational “conspiracy” theory show on, and the discovery channel is actually paying Sarah Palin to talk. Enough said there. But what do I know? I’m apparently dumb enough to watch CBS.
you said it!
that episode about anything can happen thursday really sailed over my head.
You are kidding, right?
LOL
This is the best news I have heard all day! I love this show and I feel that it fully deserves this renewal for the next 3 years. However, yes, it should be able to keep up it’s good quality and science aspects, considering that is how the whole show began.
Only good coming out of this news is that the crew will have 3 more years of work. This is a terrible terrible show. It’s boring and all the characters are unbearable except for Kaley Cuoco. She is the best thing about this Gawd awful show. Her talents need to be used (not abused) on an actual FUNNY show.
Big Bang is mediocre at best. It never comes near the wit or intelligence of Modern Family or 30 Rock which together have won the last 4 Emmys for best comedy, a feat Big Bang will never achieve. Still, kudos to the Big Bang team– they have created something that is quite popular which is no easy task either.
It’s a show made for stupid people too stupid to realize they’re stupid.
I’m sure there are mixed feelings about the renewal — most miserable writers room in town now has three very loooong years ahead of them. Oh, well. It’s good just to have a job these days. Hang in there, fellas, and put that money away.
Details, darlin’, details…is this just the usual Chuck is a crazy mofo meme, or is the writers room truly toxic?
Find it really hard to believe, given the personalities involved, that working on BBT could be worse than working on Two and a Half Men or Mike and Molly.
Well, BBT’s writers tend to be younger than the veterans on TaaHM, so it kind of makes sense that the experience (not to mention Lorre’s co-writing credit on every episode) would be more annoying to them than the TaaHM crew, who are used to Lorre and people like him.
A show about smart people? I thought it was a show about nerdy outsiders for nerdy outsiders… and guys who make cylon toast. Congrats on their success. This has got to take a little sting off for Lorre as he watches the buzzards circle Charlie Sheen and Co.
I judge a show by my willingness to watch an episode again. I have never failed to keep watch BBT episodes over and over.
mmmm…I from Russia, and i want to say that The Big Bang Theory – best of the best comedy series)
A large number of real-world physicists refer to the show’s writers as “the Glenn Becks of the geek world.”
As is the case with Glenn Beck’s fans, the world’s idiots latch on to something utterly idiotic with a solid conviction that it is “smart.”
I wasn’t surprised that the show got even more viewers after it showed (in Season 3) that the main characters are all fugitive apartment bombers. The show is aimed at a core audience of self-absorbed idiots with powerful delusions of their superiority.
Loving The Defenders at the moment. Big Bang well deserves the extension.
BBT is hilarious. You don’t have to be a genius to get it, just have a good sense of humor. It’s well written and blessed with a talented, cohesive cast. I challenge those of you who claim not to like it, to watch more than just a couple episodes. It’s not all about “slap-stick” humor. There’s character development, and as you get to know them and their quirks it becomes even funnier and you appreciate their individual, lovable charm.
To those of you, who don’t like TBBT: Try to look at least one episode again: The Adhesive Ducks Deficiency – my beloved one
(S03 E08). If you still don’t like it, this show is really not for you. But even that’s all right, it’s great that plurality of opinion still exist.
So when will we be able to see this show on cable’s “On Demand”???
some of you guys are sad!! just going to this site to give negative comments. get a life!
