Catherine Tate, who played Tennant’s mouthy companion Donna in the BBC sci-fi show, will play opposite the Doctor Who star in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. It’s the first time the 2 have appeared on stage together, although they get on famously. On stage they will be playing lovers who are pretty much extensions of their Doctor Who roles: Benedick and Beatrice’s endless witty sparring threatens to keep them apart forever. Much Ado opens at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End on June 1. Tate can currently be seen in the Jack Black comedy Gulliver’s Travels.

OMG. Please may they tape this for broadcast. I have a radio adaptation of Much Ado with Tennant as Benedick and he’s brilliant. Tate would make an awesome Beatrice and I can’t wait!
Does that mean he’s definitely not doing The Hobbit?
I guess this dispels the rumours that David Tennant could be in The Hobbit…
This is just flat out cool. Two very good actors.
Donna was the worst Doctor Who assistant in recent years. Yap! Yap! Yap! Why he didn’t just throw her to the Daleks I’ll never know.
You are wrong! Catherine Tate brought a wonderful mix of drama and humour to the show. Many more people loved her as Donna Noble than disses her because she was a comedienne. They must not have realized that she is an extremely talented classically trained actress! Not only this, but she is real, in life as well as in her acting. She can bare her soul as well as give someone a reason to laugh. Tate and David Tennant made a perfectly balanced pair and together they bring both of their extreme talents together in one of the most wonderful and memerable serie ever. Maybe you prefer the female companion to remain subservient and in the background? Well, if so, I hate to inform you, those days ended when Billie, Freema and Tate became the Doctor’s companions! Welcome to the 21st century!
I hope not…he’s got a few months before rehearsals would start for the play (probably mid to late April(, and a few months afterward as well, as the last performance is Sept. 3rd. The Hobbit filming starts in February, and in its’ entirety will take over a year for the two movies. Either of the roles he’s speculated to fill would not require the entire time, so it is entirely possible for him to participate if he was able to negotiate timing (and of course if he was truly asked to take part as rumored). Who knows, he could perhaps even do a split shoot both before and after the play, especially if wearing a wig to make continuity easier.
Sadly, the play means he will be missing out on taking part in any of the US publicity for Fright Night when it comes out in the US in August…and miss the premiere stateside as well for his first major Hollywood role.
I also am praying that they film this play so those of us who can’t make it to the theater can enjoy the marvelous chemistry between Catherine Tate and David Tennant! I can’t wait to see it!
