NBC’s Law & Order: Los Angeles is being revamped, and, in its new incarnation, it will closely resemble creator Dick Wolf’s original vision for the spinoff (as well as the setup of the mothership Law & Order series). There will be 2 cops, one D.D.A. and one ADA. As we first reported, Skeet Ulrich, who plays one of the cops on the show, Detective Rex Winters, will be leaving, with his last appearance slated for Episode 14. His place will be taken by Alfred Molina, who plays D.D.A Ricardo Morales. It will be revealed that his character was on the LAPD for 15 years, reaching the rank of Detective, and his level of frustration as a prosecutor has reached the tipping point so he has decided to return to the force as a Detective, partnered with TJ Jaruszalski (Corey Stoll). Terrence Howard, whose character Jonah Dekker alternated with Molina’s Morales, will now be the sole D.D.A .on the show. Howard and Molina will both appear in each episode.
Having one D.D.A. was Wolf’s original plan for LOLA. But when he was able to land both Howard and Molina, he split the duties between the two. However, Wolf had been looking for a way to have both of them on the show full-time. “We have the fortune of two world class actors on LOLA, and it was frustrating to have one on the bench every week,” Wolf said. “It would be like having Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as your quarterbacks, playing alternate games.”
As part of the creative overhaul, also departing are Regina Hall and Megan Boone, who play assistants to the two D.D.A.s. Casting is underway for a new actress to play a new ADA working under Dekker. LOLA, which is filming Episode 12, returns with originals in February.

Change the cast all you want, Mr. Wolf, but this show is awful. On the premiere, I bailed at the half-hour, never to return.
How can say the show is awful – but admit you’ve only watch HALF of ONE episode?! You realize admitting that totally negates any opinion of the show that you may have, right?
This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard. The Cop duo of Stoll and Ulrich was the only redeeming aspect to this show. I agree that Howard should be on a Soap Opera with his melodrama and although Molina is brilliant as the DA, he will be awkward as a cop. Ulrich was watchable and likable for his realism. The writing needs word on this turkey.
LOVE the changes!!!
How the hell can you say you love the changes!!
Skeet is a good detective and I doubt Alfred Molina would be as good as him as a cop. Getting rid of the females I can understand, they weren’t that good, but getting rid of Skeet is a dumb move. Dick Wolfe is reaching since this is the first show not filmed in NY.
This is a fun game of musical chairs!
Stick a fork in it. Terence Howard is the worst thing about that show. Moving him to full time is a show killer.
I agree 1000 percent.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This means we’ll be seeing a lot more of Terrence Howard. And hearing even more of his breathy-voiced, overly-dramatic, stilted delivery of lines. Uggh! I love Corey Stoll’s moustache, but not enough to outweigh my distaste for Howard’s voice. My Season Pass now officially CANCELED.
Gonna miss Skeet. It was nice to have one version of L&O without a bee-in-pants character as a lead.
Unless Wolf replaces the stilted dialogue and boring/obvious plots with the clever and interesting stories of SVU and CI, he can shuffle those deck chairs all he wants and still won’t have a hit.
Too bad in keeping Howard. He is absolutely dreadful and so wrong for this show. No energy, no empathy, no emotion. Awful acting job.
I totally agree. I can’t stand his voice and delivery.
Skeet Ulrich was painfully boring.
The opening theme song needs redone as well.
After years of changing cast members on the previous “Law and Order” shows, they show know by now that changing cast members doesn’t change the show at all. If they want to improve the shows ratings they need to change the writing and directing of the show.
Ulrich and the other actors weren’t the problem, the awful writing and storylines were. And the fact that actors seemed to be given the direction, “Remember your character is on sedatives.
There needs to be an opening theme. It just feels weird without one.
can’t wait to see Molina as a Detective every week.
Dick Wolf and L&O are so over-rated and so over. Most failing and flailing shows aren’t given the numerous re-casting Mulligans that Wolf has gratuitously received.
Did Dick Wolf come across unused scripts for NBC’s failure OUTLAW when he “came up” with the Molina tweak?
Interesting changes. I agree with the above posts that the writing/cases need to improve and that Howard has been awkward, at best, but Molina could be VERY interesting in the detective role and it could add some tension between the DA and cops about handling of cases.
There are many out of work talented actors in LA, surely Wolf could find a better cast, especially T. Howard, who reminds me of a Xanax on a rainy day.
T h could play the perfect butler; bland and boring , no participation, a background.
Can’t stand the show. Los Angeles is just too boring. The people are all the same.
Terrence Howard sounds like he’s going to cry. Isn’t Alfred Molina too old to be a detective? I like him anyway.
Can we get one more minority on the show since you fired Regina Hall? Better yet, can you move the damn thing back to NYC?
“Better yet, can you move the damn thing back to NYC?”
It’s one of TV’s minor ironies that L&O: NY’s cast had settled in nicely and were doing a terrific job when NBC pulled the plug. Cast chemistry is half the battle with this show, and it was a shame the Sisto/Anderson one got junked.
So many “yes” men surrounding Dick Wolf. Go ahead and fire all the actors and replace them with new ones. Still not going to change the fact that they aren’t telling compelling stories. We don’t care about anybody… at all. There was a reason NBC canceled the original Law & Order and it wasn’t just about licensing fees. It was old, tired and worn out. Now Dick wants to turn LOLA into the old L&O? Truly laughable. I guess they’ll really start to get it when all their shows are canceled after this season.
Skeet Ulrich was hardly the problem.
The string of events regarding LOLA across the past two days, culminating in this bizarre, patently awkward change makes me think that Dick Wolf could be living up to his first name.
Molina was fine as he was – having him in every ep is overkill. Will miss Skeet.
Agreed. My advice: Keep Guy Pierce-look alike, Skeet and keep Molina as is. Switch T. Howard to detective in the streets and let him put all that over-acting energy into a street chase or two. Lose mustached detective guy and add a by-the-books(read ball-busting) established older actress in any capacity and you’ll have a win. Trust me NBC.
I only watched for Skeet. He’s so underrated as an actor.
So I understand that they fired Skeet so that Alfred could be detective? So wrong. They should have fired Terence Howard. And make Alfred sole D.D.A.
But anyway. At least there will be Alfred Molina in every episode. He is the best character on that show.
