EXCLUSIVE: Disney has closed a deal with Terry Rossio to write the fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. This will be the first one without Ted Elliott, his screenwriting accomplice on the first four pictures. The studio is also making moves to bring back director Rob Marshall for his second voyage on the franchise. This comes as his first effort, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is moving through post-production for a May 20, 2011 release. I’m told that Johnny Depp has a deal structure to return for a fifth film that will clearly be drawn up for him to reprise Jack Sparrow, though it’s too early to consider him locked. The studio and Jerry Bruckheimer are consumed with the fourth installment, but Rossio’s deal is done.

I’m excited to see On Stranger Tides but I think it should end after that. Doing a fifth film would just ruin it and become another trilogy.
Bring ‘em on, POTC, 5, 6, 7 – enjoyed all the POTCs, love the sea, love Jack Sparrow, love the created world. So what if they are sequels? Better that than a lot of the lame new stuff that comes out.
Case in point was how disappointed I was with “Men Who Stare At Goats” – was OK but not great. Can’t wait for the next Star Trek either. It’s no different than a series of books by a favorite author. Try watching a POTC movie and not smiling once, I dare yah.
i am counting the days to may20th but if depp not in number 5 will not even think about seeing it sparrow makes these movies work
The first two were great, but they keep getting worse & worse. Hopefully instalment four will be better without Bloom & Knightley!! I don’t mind if they keep making them, because Pirates are fun entertaining films, even if a bit unoriginal etc!
more milking
Without Bloom and Knightly I don’t give a dang for these movies! I love Will Turner since he is the amazing and interesting character and he is played so FIIIINE by Orlando. Just LOVE his performance in each movie! No Will Turner = No POTC. Depp’s Sparrow is the annoying predictable coward who sets everyone up just to save his own pitiful self. And to be honest, I’m quite tired of all this overexposure and PR tricks for Depp whose performance was sometimes OK, sometimes plain mediocre and some rare times had its moments (mostly when he was sharing the screen with the strong actors). He totally could not hold on his own. I saw the trailer and Depp looks like he is worn out and bored. And…Penelope Cruz? Who is next for casting? Paris Hilton? I’m out of the POTC fandom which is sad because I’ve been there for several years. I stick to the original trilogy with the characters and actors I love, Mr. Bruckheimer! Even if you and your favorite “Sparrow Flash Card” ruined the lives of my favorite characters in the 3rd movie.
The second film was hated because of monotonous scenes like Depp and company running on a wheel for 15+ minutes. If you cut the bloat (45+ minutes) out of all 3 movies and tightened them up a bit they’d actually probably be fairly decent but alas, they overstayed their welcome, particularly the second and third movie.
@Ice:
Yikes. You sir, are clearly not familiar with Mr. Depp’s career. He actually was in several good movies prior to Pirates, (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, From Hell, Blow, Donnie Brascoe, Ed Wood, etc.) and since the Pirates movies he seems to be sticking with characters that are weird just for the sake of being weird, with little to no substance behind them.
From all the movies from Mr. Depp’s career that you’ve mentioned the only movie I may consider as good is Gilbert Grape. Donny Brasco is a bad quality movie with the unimpressive performance by Mr. Depp. I haven’t seen Ed Wood and neither I’m intended because I don’t find Mr. Depp’s performances interesting or full of color. Full of make up only. I did see enough of his movies because of the different actors, directors or the material that could be interesting to me. Mr. Depp performances are too monocromatic for my cup of tea. And in the most cases I don’t see the personage but Mr. Depp. I’ve read somewhere that he was considered as a “Box Office poison” for years before POTC. I’ve checked the numbers and I can see why. I say he got really lucky with POTC. And he is lucky that Bruckheimer needs him so far. Especially after Orlando and Keira didn’t want to work with that producer again.
I’ve found all the Pirates movies very entertaining . . . stylish in that they’ve taken some authentic locales, historical truths both technilogical and social/political, and merged them nicely with mythical creatures and some common nautical myths in a way that’s certainly more fantastic than reality . . . sort of the point of any movie based on fantasy. They’ve managed to take some very well-known myths and put an interesting and watchable spin on them, complete with some talent like Depp, Rush, Nighy, and their over-the-top performances that match the imaginations of the artists that have created some incredible settings.
There are any number of books that have more than a dozen or so in their series because people do enjoy ongoing adventures of the same characters, in different circumstances. Comics and graphic novels do the same, as do any number of teevee shows. And, as with any of these, they are courting the fans like myself that enjoy watching/reading them. If a show or book does badly, it will reflect in the numbers, and likely even all but the most die-hard fans will lose interest. But, if they continue to entertain me, I’ll go see them with my family that also enjoy the ride.
Frankly, there’s no such things as true ‘originality’ anymore, because any one tale can be considered a ‘rip’ from stories dating back long before even Shakespeare’s time, so whining about any originality lacking in these movies is a moot point. These movies are original in the sense that they are entertaining by reviving what’s largely been an under-used movie asset/genre lately. If someone doesn’t like it, by all means, feel free not to pay the movie ticket cost or the dvd rental.
Or go see any of the Twilight sequels.
After seeing the trailer for POTC 4, I thought it looked like a good end to the series… I didn’t like the second or third very much, with the sea creature pirates and whatever, but this one looked like it was going back to the basics that made the first movie fun.
Even so, the fourth movie hasn’t even come out yet, so I can’t even say if it DID do any justice to the potential it had.
Five is seeming like too much. If they’re just announcing it will be written now let’s hope it dies before production starts. I’m trying to name a series right now that has succeeded through four or five sequels and I just can’t.
Loved the first three. Loved the trailer. Look forward to 4, 5, 6 and beyond.
I will support as many PoTc movies as they want to put out… I been waiting forever for the 4th installment… And Im sure Ill be there for the 5th and 6th one, midnight premiere and all… Keep Geoffrey in them too..
Go Disney and franchise the hell out of your products and rides and characters… !!! They are loved all over the world.
I think all 3 movies were great. I love Johnny Depp and the whole crew. I’m not sure how I feel about Bloom and Knighley not being in the next movie, but I hope they bring them back for the 5th or 6th movie, afterall in the 3rd movie Will Turner is stuck at sea for 10 years and Elizabeth has his HEART I would like for it to end that he goes back for it.
Hey haters,
Stop dissing this movie. We’ll see whether it is good or not when it comes out. But until then get a life and leave the pirates to do their thing. Don’t ruin other people’s enjoyment just because you aren’t as popular as these films. Next time just go and comment on something that you do like instead of posting flames here.
Good on Disney for securing another POTC movie. These movies bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. Altogether the POTC movies have won a whopping 71 awards, been nominated for 8 Oscars and won one, so your facts right before you bag it out. If you couldn’t follow the plot-line that was your problem. I believe that as long as the same writers and Depp are kept pirates movies will still be successful.
Hi… I love Pirates of the Caribbean but I have to say that with so many installments I get frustrated that no one even contains a single line or character about POrtugal! Being a portuguese I´m really sad. Come on!Doesn´t Terry knows a little of Mundial History? We discover half of the world!! Daniela Ruah is a great actress she could bring a new and courageous new charater
I know that we are a little country but I just come from the theatre from seing the fourth film and the theatre was sold out, once again!!
i love to see another one but add some of the old characters back but if they don’t have johhny dep it will not be worth watching there were a lot of unanswered questions as well but no matter what make up voice overs and special effects you can’t replace his unique personality and accting
Honestly, I have to agree that no sequel can ever live up to the original Pirates movie. That being said, I don’t care if they keep making movies. I love this series, and I honestly feel like nothing they do can “ruin” it. Honestly, the movies still make money. If people don’t like the fact they’re still making movies, don’t watch them. Fans like me will watch the series until it finally does end. Making another movie doesn’t hurt anyone, so stop being bothered by it. I really like how they handled the fourth, especially because of it’s sense of novelty. It was a new plot, spun off of the plot of the previous three. If they do make a fifth, however, I hope that they’ll create a new overarching plot, as with the first three. I loved the fourth, but it could’ve stood on its own. The fourth doesn’t call for a fifth, which is why the fifth does seem a bit superfluous. Quite honestly, I feel like the ending of the fourth movie was one of the most solid endings thus so far (other than the first). The second movie called for a third, and the third called for a fourth. The fourth doesn’t call for a fifth, though, so I’m interested to see where it goes!
I think that a fifth movie would be amazing! The first four were just fantastic. I would very much enjoy seeing another ingenius film by such talented writers, directors, cast, and crew. Especially with such a actor as Johnny Depp! I strongly encourage the producers to make another movie.
ohmytotalgoshiness!!!!!!! i totally think the same thing. they should definitely make another movie. the other four were like totally amazing!! and i love Johnny Depp and oh my gosh “Philip” is soooo hot!!!! i like totally love him and if there is another movie he totally should be in it. oh and his eyes are fantastic.
I LOVE PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN!!!!!!
p.s. to those haters out there why don’t you just take a chill pill and stop making horrible comments like that and stop using filthy language. oh my gosh nobody wants to see that!!!
For all of you complaining about pirates of the caribbean movies.. Why don’t you spend a little less time complaining and replying to people’s comments on this website if the movies are so awful to you? I’m positive you have something much more entertaining to occupy your time with. Frankly, if other people like the movies and want them to continue, what difference does it make? You are entitled to like what you like and other people the same. So if the trailers to these movies “make your eyes bleed”… Well I suggest you see a doctor because that’s not normal. Perhaps you should also spend a little less time criticizing other peoples interest in movies and go find something to comment on that you actually like. Don’t rain on everyone else’s parade.
what’s so bad about making another one ? who knows it might turn out good .
Im am A huge fan of the pirates series, but I was dissapointed with the latest movie, I ask that if there is anyway you can, Keep Davy Jones alive In this next movie, have him somehow strike a deal with every one else so that the movie ends with jones as Captian of the dutchman, doing the job he was charged with, I know you can come up with a way to make this happen,he is such a huge character in the movies and I think his presence in the others is what made them great. I spend hours (no lie), with my friends talking of how the script should be written to make this movie great. I thank you very much for your time and would really apprieciate a reply email,Thank You!
