UPDATE:
Walt Disney Studios has shifted the release dates of two of the studio’s 3D films. But there were definitely some raised eyebrows at Fox today at this aggressive John Carter Of Mars vs Prometheus scheduling move by Disney. Dogfight! Prometheus is that Ridley Scott film scripted with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof from Alien DNA. So now Disney’s 3D John Carter Of Mars based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fantasy series comes off its June 8th, 2012, date and onto March 9, 2012. Disney also moved its Tim Burton-directed Frankenweenie based on his student film about a kid who reanimates his dog after it was run over down to October 5th, 2012, from March 9th, 2012.

I hope that this untested newbie Andrew Stanton has the proper eye to make “John Carter of Mars”.
I mean, what has this guy directed? How DARE Disney give him hundreds of millions of dollars to make a roiling, ground-breaking, insane 3-D fantasy sci-fi action epic.
Hope you are being sarcastic – Stanton is one of Pixar’s best.
I think Brad Bird will prove with MI4 that the leap from A+ class animation to live action is doable
What’s Disney planning to put up for early-mid summer instead?
The Avengers is set to be released May 4th.
They have “Brave” (animated) in mid-June. Think Tangled meets Robin Hood.
So is John Carter supposed to be any good?
I love Taylor Kitsch, so I’m hoping it’s fantastic.
TIM RIGGINS!!
I certainly hope the move of John Carter of Mars from summer to pre-May is not indicative of the quality of the film being less-than expected. It is one of my most anticipated films of 2012.
Can’t wait for John Carter!! I get to see James Purefoy sooner than I expected!!
Fox better have its finger on the chicken switch because as I understand it ‘Mars’ is a Pixar pic and could quite possibly be the studio’s Avatar size hit. There’s no question of what I’ll be seeing on that weekend.
“Frankenweenie” wasn’t a student film. Tim shot it at Disney while he was working for the studio. (I covered it and interviewed him about it for Cinefantastique magazine while it was still in production. Even got to climb around the original “Frankenstein” sets with him that Tim talked Disney into renting for him.)
This is a move from Pixar to put their “brain trust” into live action — something Lasseter has wanted for a long time. Stanton is the story guy behind the Toy Story films, WALL-E, Nemo, Monsters, Inc. etc. He can tell a story for sure — directing a movie, we’ll see.
He has directed some of Pixar’s best
WALL·E
Finding Nemo
A Bug’s Life
I’m sure he’ll do great with this film
Stanton was the actual director of Finding Nemo and WALL-E
Disney must be trying to force Prometheus out, which is why they didn’t schedule it for the 2nd or the 16th.
How much misinformation can one post and comments have anyway? Frankenweenie wasn’t a student film. It was Disney produced short. They just didn’t know what to do with it at the time. But it wasn’t a student film. Tim directed it after Hansel and Gretel which was also done at Disney.
As far as Andrew Stanton. He wasn’t the head of story at Pixar on all those films, Joe Ranft was. Stanton was Ranft’s right hand man and personally suggested to John Lasseter as a co-director for Bug’s Life because Lassester wanted to groom a second director because he knew he couldn’t direct everything.
As far as whether he’ll do a good job. Well, considering this film will probably be about 75-80% CGI and he’s co-directed or directed three of the most inventive and creative CGI films of the past 15 years I’m guessing he’ll do just fine.
This is probably specifically so John Carter wouldn’t compete with Brave, which is set for midsummer 2012 release.
Disney’s opening John Carter against Prometheus?
The original FRANKENWEENIE wasn’t a student film. It was a black-&-white short directed by Burton for Disney in the early ’80s; the story goes that it was originally planned to go out with the late ’84 reissue of PINOCCHIO, but the studio feared it was too weird and scary.
Stanton was CO- director on Bug’s Life (w/Lasseter) and Finding Nemo (w/Lee Unkrich).
Nice! Any weekend that includes sci-fi work from Andrew Stanton, Damon Lindeloff, and Ridley Scott sounds like heaven to me!
Fox will have its butt handed to them against a Pixar film. Fox creative has been adrift for sometime now. Have you seen their track record this past year? Won’t be long before Murdoch asks Gianopulos and Rothman to leave.
They had better do a better job than asylum did. We don’t need another crapshoot imitation ruining the series good name. I insist that everyone read the books before wathing the movie. Find them on project guttenburg.
Edgar Rice Burroughs!!!
