EXCLUSIVE: With the long-delayed second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand officially a go, who will replace cancer-stricken Andy Whitfield as Rome’s most famous gladiator? Last Friday, Starz’s boss Chris Albrecht said that the network brass are “confident that we will find an actor who can ably step into Spartacus’ sandals.” I hear that that same day, the pay cable network’s executives had received a screen test for the role done by former Prison Break star Dominic Purcell. Throwing Purcell’s name into the mix is an intriguing proposition. For once, he does have the the physique to pull off a believable gladiator. Australian actor Liam McIntyre is said to still be in serious contention for the role, and he continues to bulk up as the network execs reportedly liked him as an actor in his November screen test but his thin frame was a problem. But last week, rumors started circulating that Starz had also approached a name actor for the part. Purcell has been vacationing in his native Australia, so he put himself on tape there and emailed the clip to Starz brass last Friday. It is not clear what the network’s final decision will be, but if Purcell gets the lead, his last-minute hire would resemble his 11th-hour casting on Fox’s Prison Break where he auditioned and got the role 3 days before the pilot was to go into production. And in another peculiar coincidence, Purcell’s Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller reportedly expressed interest in taking over the Spartacus role back in October.

I don’t think this is the right choice, this guy looks like a bad guy, not hot and innocent like the original actor who will be difficult to replace.
Suggest going back to the drawing board and keep looking …
i’m confused: gods of the arena is premiering on the 21st? is it the 3rd season that is in delayed production? someone please explain!
Gods of the Arena is a 6-part prequel miniseries, it’s not season 2.
It was originally going to be episode 5 of season 2, but because Andy got sick, they decided to expand it to a miniseries, in lieu of season 2.
Gods of the Arena is a prequel to Blood and Sand. My guess is they are separating the 2 series and giving them their own “seasons”.
Gods of the Arena is a prequel to season 1. This story is in reference to the actual 2nd season that has been/is delayed.
Gods of the Arena is a prequel that explains “the rise of the House of Batiatus.” It was only brought about to fill time during Whitfield’s recovery.
god of the arena is prequel, 2nd season if they will find an actor will premiere end of 2011/2012.
@AIM FOR THE BUSHES – YOUR NAME IS HILARIOUS! IT ALMOST SLIPPED PAST ME… THEN I CAUGHT IT AND AS I WAS TAKING A DRINK OF BEER… DAMN, MAN, GOT BEER ALL OVER ME!
I REALLY WISH SOMEONE WOULD COME OUT WITH AN INFORMED DATE FOR THE “BLOOD AND SAND” SEASON 2 PREMIER. HERE IT IS THE BEGINNING OF JULY, AND I STILL CANNOT FIND A SINGLE THING… AT LEAST NOTHOING ACCURATE
I’VE HEARD EVERYTHING FROM “THIS SUMMER” TO “THIS FALL”…. EVEN TO “THIS WINTER”!!! I’VE EVEN HEARD ANDY IS RETURNING.
“Gods” is a prequal to season 1, I think it’ll only be 6 episodes, and won’t have a spartacus.
Ugh I worked with Dominic he is set poison. They should call some show runners who worked with him and save themselves the headache. Plus Andy had charisma, go with an unknown as opposed to this second tier choice. It is just not exciting.
you are completely wrong and you know it. not sure what you worked on him with, but i have talked with his producers and crew on prison break and on his recent films and they had nothing but great things to say…one producer in particular was going on and on with what a hard working actor he is, was always well prepared, and he never ANY drama or complaints…frankly, he is the only actor they are considering that could handle this type of demanding series work.
I wonder what recent acting job bobmcbob did not get? See, Bob? There is no reason to be mean.
I would like this casting move. He was good on Prison Break and he would be good in this, too.
He’s sexy and really a great leading man. He’d be hot and they’d be lucky to get him.
Dominic Purcell would make a great ‘Spartacus’. He’s bad ass and believable. Way better choice than the pasty and boring Liam McIntyre.
I think Purcell would be a better casting choice than McIntyre. He’s got the look for it, much more believable Spartacus.
Purcell would be amazing. He has the range, the acting chops, the intensity and the physical presence. No question he should have this.
Wow! That would be so exciting! Dominic P is hot and oozes manliness – he would be perfectly cast.
Always been a fan of this guy…he’s got the chops and physicality and would be a great choice for this role
Dominic for Spartacus! He is manly, sexy and a good actor too – he has been great in everything but I especially loved him in John Doe – would love to see him in gladiator costume and sandals. He is the right Aussie for the role!
I believe it was actually Wentworth Miller that was the last minute hire for Prison Break, not Purcell.
Actually, it was Wentworth Miller who was cast at the 11th hour for Prison Break.
Dominic Purcell would be a FANTASTIC choice! He was GREAT on Prison Break! Spartacus was the greatest gladiator….and Purcell has definitely got the talent to portray the innocence of the character and, as an added BONUS, would look HOT in a “skirt” too! Can hardly WAIT to see how this one turns out!
Nice photo buddy….
@Anonymous: Gods of the Arena is a 6 episode prequel to Spartacus, which they came up with to keep the Spartacus production team busy while Andy Whitfield went through his cancer treatment. At first, Andy seemed to have beaten the cancer but unfortunately it returned, which is why they’ve been looking for someone to replace him so they can continue the show instead of having to cancel it.
Never missed an episode of Prison Break. Strong in that series and would bring that strength to Spartacus!
LOVE HIM! Think he would be an awesome Sparticus – he is all man, very sexy, loved him in John Doe and Prison Break. Glad they are seriously considering him.
“Bad guy”???? You obviously have never seen an episode of Prison Break, or John Doe for that matter. You are just stereotyping. Purcell oozes of leading manliness, would look great in gladiator armor and sandals and can be sensitive, bold and masculine all in the same scene.
I think dominc or wentworth would b great either one would lease me
Dominic Purcell as Spartacus? Yes!
First of all, Dominic Purcell can’t act. He can play a thug or a brute but he doesn’t have the emotional range to handle the vulnerable side of Spartacus. Second of all, he looks like he could be Crixus’ brother. He looks too much, in the face, like Manu Bennett, the actor who plays Crixus.
No, the producers need to keep searching for a Sparty replacement. The show will tank if Dominic is the lead actor of the show.
I DON’T think Dominic is a good choice! If he gets the part, I won’t be watching the show. How about Henry Cavill?
second!
Dominic Purcell is a great choice!! My husband and I were just saying he would be good, and now I see this article. Personally I loved him in Prison Break, and wished that show had continued, but…. ANYWAY. Dominic = Good Choice and I would most definitely watch!!!
