EXCLUSIVE: Time Crimes, the remake of the 2007 Spanish time travel film, has been moved by Steve Zaillian from United Artists to DreamWorks. Zaillian, who’d set it up at UA to produce, has also committed to rewrite the script. Tim Sexton wrote the early drafts, with Zaillian overseeing as producer along with Agnes Mentre. Zaillian’s Film Rites has a first look deal at DreamWorks. He takes on the writing job after a productive period where he adapted the Stieg Larsson novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for David Fincher and Scott Rudin at Sony Pictures Entertainment and made a deal to write the followup, The Girl Who Played with Fire. Zaillian has the Bennett Miller-directed Moneyball coming next fall with Brad Pitt. And The Irishman, Zaillian’s scripted adaptation of the mob memoir I Heard You Paint Houses, is shaping up as a film Martin Scorsese will direct, with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci starring.
Time Crimes is an intricate science fiction thriller in which a man repeatedly goes back in time an hour in an attempt to alter the events of a crime. Film Rites’ Garrett Basch will be executive producer along with Eduardo Carneros Gonzalez and Nacho Vigalondo. Vigalondo wrote and directed the original, released under the title Los Cronocrimenes. Zaillian’s repped by WME. Below is a trailer from the original film:

yes!!!!!!!!
Sounds pretty similar to “Source Code”
but not!
Excited for this.
Source Code BORROWED so much from this great film that I’m shocked Summit moved forward with their pg-13 pos. Another bomb for the Twilight studio.
Which means another bomb for Jake Gyllenhaal, the supporting actor pretending to be a leading man.
Awesome! Good to see Z attached to so many good projects. Unlike that hack, Sorkin.
@Toby: You’re kidding right? Sorkin is a hack? If you are not kidding and you are a writer, Stop. Now. Do not quit your day job.And no, I’m not affiliated in any way with Aaron Sorkin.
sheesh.
Phenomenal film. One of the best Sci-Fi films in years and one of the best time travel movies ever. Cronenberg would be a good fit to direct the remake.
One of my favorites from Sundance ’08! Hope Zaillian and co. can knock the remake out of the park.
Haven’t seen the original, but this looks interesting. Good to see DreamWorks and Zaillian embracing original storytelling!
Let me guess he tries to prevent himself from killing his wife.
That’s the mystery. What made him want to kill her an hour in the future? Obviously he discovered she’s having an affair and he decides to kill her out of jealousy.
Wrong on every count, but good try.
It’s actually much worse than that…
An endless cycle that literally makes no sense when it all boils down. Such a waste of celluloid.
but not!!!
Agreed. It’s one of those flicks that people like to simper that they love, but then when they find out you’ve actually seen it and you know it sucks it turns out they haven’t “actually” seen it. Worth seeing, just so people can stop defending it.
but not!!
What a hard working writer these projects look interesting…
It’s always nice to hear that someone of Steve Z’s caliber can still get involved with smart projects. Unlike that fraud Sorkin and that shlockster Akiva. Plus, Steve has a great producing partner in Garrett Basch. A team with great taste is refreshing in this town filled with absolute crap movies and crappy people making them.
Go Film Rites!
what was wrong with Tim Sexton’s script?
Love the Z man doing this. It just shows a powerful drama can always be wrapped up in an intense genre. But, SORKIN a hack??? SOCIAL NET isn’t Lawrence of Arabia and doesn’t try to be. But come on…you have any idea how tough it was for Sorkin to adapt this specific non fiction work…and still make it compelling enough to assuredly warrant the awards it’s taking left and right?
this movie sucked, I don’t care what anyone says…
it’s just not cool.
next!
I couldn’t agree more, arkansas dave rudabaugh. TIMECRIMES was horrible. Don’t know why they’re remaking it at all.
You’re both very confused.
It really did suck; plot holes that you can drive a time machine through and no sense of purpose or logic. Stank highly of Shylaman. The start was good and the ending okay. Maybe they’ll fix the holes in the remake.
the original was a very flawed but entertaining film.
Love the Spanish film. Remake couldn’t be in better hands and glad to see the original director is at least involved as a producer.
Time Crimes was a let down, tons of plot holes and nonsensical character motivation, but the first act and the ending were quite good. Just hope they can make the characters actions seem less forced and rigid; either that or make the lead character a total wanker which would explain his incredibly bizarre actions.
but not!!!!
Pointless remake which won’t benefit from the extra budget
love the original and can’t wait for this. go dreamworks!
Timecrimes was an absolutely phenominal movie and only lacked due to a very limited budget. With a slightly revised script and a few additional dollars this movie will not only be great but will make a lot of money for someone. To suggest that this movie sucked or was anything less than great indicates a complete lack of insight into the mind of the author and no creativity. How many movies have such intrigue and Inception owes approximately 50% of it’s profits to TC. Stories, within stories within stories. I can’t wait for a remake in English. Major Hit guaranteed.
