UPDATE: Summit Entertainment insider is acknowledging that a studio DVD containing the Mel Gibson-Jodie Foster not-yet-released movie The Beaver is missing and appears to have been stolen from Mel Gibson’s mailbox. The LA Sheriff’s Department is investigating. The insider also is confirming the details TMZ first reported that the studio gave Mel the final cut of the movie on DVD, he screened it at his home, and at 10:45 AM put the DVD in his mailbox so a courier could pick it up and return it to Summit. The courier showed up at 2:30 PM Wednesday, and the DVD was missing from Mel’s mailbox. Few movies have received so much pre-release publicity as this one. Question is, will it translate into theater tickets?

No, he put it there for a courier to pick up, not the US Postal Service. I have a relative who works out of his home and does the same thing. He’ll finish what he’s working on, burn it to a CD, put the CD in the mailbox, and about a half-hour later, a courier drops by to get it and take it back to the main office. Since they do this after the mail has been delivered, the US Postal Service isn’t affected.
As for this being a publicity stunt, I’m not sure. It wouldn’t surprise me if it is and it wouldn’t surprise me if it isn’t. Regarding Mel, yes, the man has made some mistakes, but compared to the actions of other Hollywood types, he’s hardly the villain some like to make him out to be. Besides, I’d rather judge an actor by his work than by his life. I don’t like the way a lot of Hollywood actors behave, but I won’t deny some of them are brilliant at what they do on screen. The same goes for Mel.

Technically you are not supposed to put anything in a mailbox but US post-office delivered mail, but not a big deal – bigger deal to remove something from a mailbox, and the postal inspector may still be called in by the sheriff. If I vowed not to watch any movie in which an actor/actress who’s behavior I find reprehensible is part, I can’t imagine their would be very many movies that I could watch. Get a grip people, a movie is not about the actors, it’s about the story and the performances; and should be judged as such. If I can watch Jane Fonda (a traitor) in a movie, you can watch Mel Gibson (a drunk).
TMZ answered this question today on its live webcast. Since it was never entered into the US postal system & it was never intended to be, it was taken from a privately owned, rural delivery mailbox,
so the postal inspectors have nothing to do with it. So the only crime is the theft of the DVD, whose value is solely that of the disk, which makes this a misdemeanor.

Hmm, mail theft is a federal crime and should be reported to the Postal Inspection Service. Of course making a false claim would also be a federal crime.
Mailboxes are for use by the USPS only, not private couriers. Trying to file a claim because someone stole something from your mailbox that you left there for a courier is kind of like trying to report stolen hash from your garage.

Considering that it was between 10:45 AM and 2:30PM, wouldn’t it be possible that the mailman/mailwoman delivered mail to his mailbox during that time and picked up the envelope thinking it was mail? I doubt that they scrutinize every piece of mail for address and correct postage along their route.

Honey – there were 8 tapes. EIGHT. Not just some one edited tape. And isn’t this suspicious to you that Mel Gibson NEVER, no once sad that tapes were doctored? Don’t you think that if all that wasn’t true then there would be immediately a law suit against Radar site?

Well, your last few words are right. But, let’s remember that the Constitution [Amendment 1] guarantees free speech, but it is political speech that is guaranteed and not Gibson’s drunken rants. Stop defending him. His screaming comments are akin to yelling Fire in a theater. Certainly, he has a right to say what he wants, but he should be doing in the scream room at his home.

Don’t be alarmed – there are millions more out there just like that guy. The 1st A doesn’t specify the type of speech – it protects all speech. Get smart or dummy up.
Well, there are a few exceptions – the fire in a theatre clause (endangering the public) and making explicit threats (verbal assault) – however, I agree 100% with you that Mel here is well within his First Amendment rights to rant about whatever bothers him, drunk or not. Now if he were found saying something like “I am going to kill (insert name of jew here)” that would be a bit different. I don’t think that everything he has been noted as saying is tasteful, but I don’t think there are more than *maybe* 1% of people in Hollywood who haven’t said something I found ridiculous or distasteful, and that’s generally because I haven’t heard them say anything at all. Dig a lot of Gibson’s work, personally, and I think that the endless badmouthing makes me more sympathetic to him than otherwise.
Amen on sending Gibson to his scream-room. Given the volume and excrement that flows from his mouth, he probably has an entire scream-wing in his home for his needs.
One can only hope that the film does no business. Anyone who does business with this bigot deserves to lose their entire investment.
