This is a real shocker, and not just Hollywood but the rest of America should love it. What a coup for Warner Bros getting The Man on this, the 4th version of A Star Is Born. Of course, Clint Eastwood will produce (as always through Malpaso) as well as direct the script by Will Fetters along with producers Billy Gerber and and Basil Iwanyk and Jon Peters (who made the infamous 3rd version of A Star Is Born with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson). No male lead is cast yet, but the possibilities are endless. The project, which has been at WB for several years, had hoped to pair Beyoncé and Will Smith. But how about P Diddy (who’s turning into a surprisingly fine actor along with Beyoncé’s husband Jayz), Eddie Murphy (reteaming with Beyoncé after Dreamgirls), or any white guy imaginable though Robert Downey Jr and Jon Hamm are names that have been floating?
Hey, I’m one of those huge fans who thinks Clint can do anything. And Beyoncé scored at the box office for Screen Gems — one of its biggest — in Obsessed. (And, yes, I do happen to think she can act.) This is going to be a high profile film but low cost since Eastwood is at the helm. The idea is to start shooting in the Fall.
Of course, Clint has had a huge interest in music off and on screen. He intended to major in music theory in college. He learned how not to do a musical when starring in the dreadful Paint Your Wagon (1969). He played that super-cool jazz DJ in Play Misty For Me, his 1971 directorial debut. He sdirected and starred alongside his son Kyle in 1982′s Honkytonk Man about a Depression-era aspiring country music singer. He directing Bird (1988), a biopic starring Forest Whitaker as jazz musician Charlie “Bird” Parker. He more recently has been doing all his own scores for his movies, including Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby and Changeling. Eastwood also partly scored Gran Torino with his son Kyle and Jamie Cullum.
Warner Bros’ idea of a 4th version of A Star Is Born has been floating around for some time now. This pic fell apart and just came back together. Back in January, Deadline reported that Nick Cassavetes was in early talks with Warner Bros to direct an updated version of the well-worn story of a love affair between an alcoholic star on the way down, and a young female artist on the rise. There have been a trio of A Star Is Born versions made since the 1930s, the last one coming in 1976 with Kristofferson playing the boozer and Streisand the wannabe. Or even 4 if you consider What Price Hollywood (1932) made by George Cukor which is often forgotten.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Sounds like a terrible idea.
And wait until they announce it will be shot in 3D.
I’ve never bought a Beyonce CD…never seen her in concert…I’m not a fan of Beyonce only because I think she’s a mediocre singer with killer entertainment and marketing skills. It’s been know she’s wanted to do this movie….but Clint as director? I don’t get that….the story has to be updated, and is he the one to bring it to 2011 standards?
And why is an OLD WHITE actor being sought? Have they heard of Anthony Mackey or Terrence Howard? Or is Hollywood trying to duplicate the Bodyguard? I see it now: all new songs, all written by Beyonce.
I can just take about 10 minutes of Beyonce. That’s about all.
And — she cannot act.
Too much haterade eh, Sally ??? Beyonces’ accolades are neither accident nor construct: She’s talented as an actor, and with music, once you get her to drop the pop mike and sing REAL music, she’s likely the most talented vocalist of her generation.
What freakin’ Beyonce are you talkin’ about? She can sing…a little…dance a lot, but acting? Noooooooooo! She had a couple of moments in Dream Girls, but the rest was crap. You can see the wheels turning when she acts and that kills any sense of talent right there, and…she’s just not believable most of the time. If she’s the future of acting, modeling, dancing, singing and entertainment in general, America has become just as stupid as people feared it might twenty-five years ago.
Calm down everyone!
She can act- Remember Foxy Cleopatra in Goldmember?
How about Charlie Sheen for the male lead?
Obliviously, you’re drinking the B’s Kool-aid. She is totally overated in all facets. I’ll give her the ability to perform on stage. But I could not watch her for long because I do not like the songs she’s performing to. Go figure.
No hate chum. Just simple recognition that Beyonce is a two bit entertainer who shows up in short dresses to get some audience ie MTV style.
I’m really disappointed in Eastwood. A lot of respect just left the building Harry.
.. just saying ..
She was excellent as Etta James in CADILLAC RECORDS (and I’m not a Beyonce fan, to say the least.) But each version of this story is lesser than the one before, so the best one can hope for is glossy THE BODYGUARD-type crap.
Eastwood is a titan in film terms but alas that means that he is not invincible!!
INVICTUS WAS A SHOCKER! I mean, how do you mess up Mandela’s story…that’s like Oscar material right there and Clint didn’t “bring it” on that one. As a South African (and rest assured that I echo the sentiments of many other South Africans and non South Africans) I’m all for films that put my country and its people in the shop window – but we could have done without that one!
As far as Beyonce is concerned…I reserve the right to reserve comment. All I can say is that she’s getting her’s…
Most talented vocalist of her time….really! She does not hold a candle next to Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and numerous others. She is a mediocre singer. No hate, I like Beyonce, but she is no where near being the best vocalist of her generation. Beyonce is great at shaking her behind!!!
Are u nuts?! Yea she has entertainment skills out of this world but she’s one of the best vocalist out there which has been a major contributor to her staying relevant. If she didn’t have talent she wouldn’t have lasted this long on pure stage nonsense. I’m not a huge Beyonce fan either but I recognize her vocal ability. If you don’t think she has any vocal talent then I’d really like to know who your favorite artist is!! Or at least the top three artist you consider to be outstanding vocal genius’!
if you think beyonce is one of the best vocalist then i feel sorry for you. that chick yells and when she’s not yelling..her voice wobbles to much for me. you should check at other singers that are not pimped out by this industry. anita baker, fantasia, Erykah Badu, Melanie Fiona..and many more. see the industry doesn’t want you to hear women that can really sing. on top of that, their music isn’t bubble gum crap that beyonce constantly sells. i like beyonce’s first cd, then i went down hill from there. so sad. i suggest that people start looking up soul singers because i lot of people do not know anything about real singers and real messages. people have been brainwashed.
Sally, it sounds as if you are very opinionated. It’s good to have opinions, but only when they make sense. If you cant stand to listen to Beyonce, and have never watched one of her films, how do you know she can’t act,or sing?? You have presented yourself in a very ignorant fashion. Do yourself a favor, download Dreamgirls onto your computer and watch it, that way you can see the talented Beyonce Knowles sing and act at the same time!!!
co-sign…..people just love to hate on Beyonce for no reason. Beyonce has one of the BEST singing voices out there. Beyonce’s vocals are off the charts with crazy range. She can sing opera, jazz, r&b, soul, etc. (just pick up her CDs)and if you doubt her vocal skills go to youtube and put in Beyonce singing at hospital. She was in a hospital no mic, no nothing, siging to cancer patients. Also saying that she cant act, please go rent cadillac records and dream girls.
i simply do NOT understand why so many ppl insist on continuously hating on Beyonce. if she found the cure for cancer, or walked on the moon it still wouldnt be enough for ppl to cut her some slack. she is the single most successful woman in the music industry and the second most successful woman in the entire entertainment industry all together, second only to oprah winfrey. she sells out concerts all over the planet, has sold hundreds of millions of albums both solo and with destinys child, and has won sountless numbers of grammy’s. the simple fact of the matter is that beyonce is and will continue to be the most talented woman of this generation of entertainment and has vocal skills that most singers only dream abt. why hate? it wont do any good anyway.
All that means is that shes POPULAR, not TALENTED. Hell, Madonna sells out concerts all the time. But I don’t think anyone in their right mind would call her a “talented singer”.
It’s not hatin’, it’s being honest. We hate her cause she’s the epitome of a mediocre singer that gets lucky and shoots to stardom despite not having any appreciable talent, while those that are GENUINELY talented get nowhere because they’re not a tall, pretty, light-skinned black woman (who seems to get lighter every year) with a long blonde weave and a big ass.
Jealous HATER….OBVIOUSLY. Be positive…if you don’t like her continue to not support her…why even comment?
So you never bought a Beyonce CD or saw her in concert so how can you even speak on her talent. I attend a lot of concerts and she is A HELL OF AN ENTERTAINER. She is one of the few where i felt I got my money worth. So you sound like you speaking from hateraid not from what you know.
If you never brought a CD or heard her at a concert, then why comment at all… Hater!
I’m not a huge Beyonce fan, but I will admit that she can DEFINITELY sing. Watch any clip of her singing live (Yes she sings live) and she sounds exactly like she does on her albums, while dancing I might add, which isn’t easy. Not everyone can sing and dance and sound as good as she does. However, acting? No way. She can’t deliver lines naturally without sounding like “and now I am attempting to act.” And she can’t bring emotion into her eyes UNLESS she is singing. Its weird because when she’s performing on stage shes alright at showing emotions in her face. But when she’s straight acting? Not a chance. Clint Eastwood is brilliant though so there is still hope I guess…
What does he know about musicals?
Wow, it’s painfully obviously that you didn’t read the entire article. Eastwood has been scoring (ie. composing) his films for quite a while. I dare say, his proven ability to actually write music coupled with his proven ability to direct films places him as one who would be far more capable than most to tackle a musical film. Just because “A Star is Born” features music as a central part of the story, does not mean this is, or will be, a Broadway style musical a la Chicago or Hairspray
Apparently the correct question is, “What do you know about Clint Eastwood?”
What a POS idea. First off remakes are weak, but when the main ‘twist’ on a remake is that it’s a black version aka The Honeymooner’s remake, then it’s even weaker.
Okay, I’ll accept that it’s not the main difference. But the 1977 reason for doing the film was it was from a music angle instead of it being about film. So is it going to be about a rising music star? Isn’t that already done in the 1977 film? And wasn’t Beyonce basically playing that part in Dreamgirls? What a rehash.
Instead of film and then music, the next level should be about politics, but that can’t happen because you can’t have a fading older male politician they can serve until their ninety.
Really Boyonce is getting long in the tooth for a female and I’ll admit she had universal appeal, she getting a lot of junk in the trunk and may now appeal to one demo.
long in the tooth?
OMG she’s 27, and it sounds like your trying to call her fat which sounds crazy also. But I can agree with you that this story would be better told with a different lead actress, I’m a Beyonce fan but I can honestly say she’s no actress.
If Clint Eastwood is directing-it will be a decent flick. We will again be seeing him nominated for best picture, best director next year. If you dont know his movies, dont judge it
If Beyonce is going to be in this movie she would have to be outgoing and not ghetto use a white guy that looks like a rockstar who can act. Oh yeah she would also have to look really hot.
I thought I was the only one who despised Beyonce! What a terrible idea, I respect Clint E. so much… But, Beyonce!?
When is this mess supposed to start. I won’t go see it or purchase it on DVD, or look at it when it comes to television. NOOOO
The movie was “Obsessed” and it only did $75 million worldwide.
Thats good for Screen Gems
yup, which was more than it’s budget! so yeah, eat that!
Which is funny because the “flop” Burlesque did 89 Million WW, 50 Million domestic, and garnered Christina praise for her acting.
Meanwhile, Beyonce’s acting in Obsessed was utterly panned, as was the movie.
FIRST!
Beyonce CANNOT act!!!!! Enough said!
Agreeeeeeeed! Beyonce is terrible. I love how Nikki Finke said P “Diddy” is “turning into a suprisingly fine actor”…..Huh?
He was pretty good in “Get Him To The Greek”
My head scratcher is “along with Jay-Z” I’m a Jigga fan, but he’s never acted in anything aside from a few awful long-form music videos (“Streets is Watching”)
For what it’s worth, I actually saw P-Diddy on stage/broadway and he was a pretty decent stage actor. I’m sure a good director can capture that for film, even if he’s not a great film actor per se.
Just my two cents. (And I’m the sort of person who never has and probably never will listen to his music.)
If you can say with a straight face that Sean Combs was decent in the stage production of A Raisin in the Sun, then I pray that you are either one of those eternally sunshiny people who has nary a negative word to say about anyone (Pol Pot, Stalin included) or that you have absolutely nothing to do with the entertainment business.
agree, neither B nor Diddy can act themselves out of a ticket.
Actually, she can. Rent Cadillac Blues and watch her performance as R and B diva Etta James. Nice work in that pic, that did no business..
The movie is called Cadillac Records. and it is a pretty good little film. Beyonce is serviceable. I look forward to the hot mess that this film can be. My vote for the male lead…Clint himself, Terrance Howard is a good call or Justin Timberlake.
Beyonce, though not a stellar actress, won’t be the problem as much as Clint Eastwood. Good director but wayyyy too old for this type of project. And if they pair her up with a non-brother on some ol’ “white man’s fantasy” ish, that will be disappointing. Just get Katy Perry…
Wayyyy to old ? Not a stellar actress ??? Perhaps YOU’D like to take a crack at directing or acting ??? Oh, wait, you don’t even have the guts to publish your stupid-*ss comments with your name.
I agree she cannot act. She is getting the rol because she has money that’s the only reason. she is pretty and can sing when her voice is not wobbly. I do not think she is oscar material at all. I feel Clint Eastwood should have picked another woman for the role. Time will tell.
groan
In order for this story to “work’ it still needs to take place in the late 1940′s or 1950′s.
Today with everyone in and out of rehab people will laugh at someone sticking with a spouce who was “ISSUES”.
Horrible idea… Why are we remaking remakes… Please stop the insanity.
I agree.Tired of all the remakes.Hollywood seems to have run out of original ideas.
That would be my only thing, that we keep doing remakes. It makes no sense. All these starving artist out here with beautifully written screenplays(I.E ME) and u people are remaking a remake! It is boring I don’t care how elaborate they make it look this go round. She has a better chance @ an Oscar if she pays Aretha Franklin I think. Of course it is an actors dream to work with Clint but I think the whole remake think is over rated. I think she should just fund her own movie and play Wonder Women like she said she wanted to…… I’m just sayin and on that note if all goes well then she will give a great performance and maybe get her naked statue good Luck anyways!!!!!
I like the remakes!
There have been so many good stories and movies from the past that this generation has never seen. It is good to update and retell them to a whole new generation!
I loved Star is Born with Streisand and Kristofferson, but it is sooo outdated (70′s hair, clothes and music – just awful 40 years later)… I would love to see a remake! And my kids will see it for the first time, so it’s new to them.
BTW, how many times have Taming Of The Shrew and Peter Pan been remade? If it’s good enough for Shakespeare and Barrie’ then its good enough for any “oldie”.
I’ll be impressed with Beyonce’s acting when she plays something other than a singer. Apart from OBSESSED, she’s played nothing but singers.
Surprised Clint is taking this on quite frankly as it certainly sounds beneath him.
But if they must make this, they should cast Robert Downey Jr who not only has the acting and singing talent required but is also easy on the eyes. Sorry, Nikki, but your suggestions of Jay Z and Puff Daddy is absurd as both have faces that would frighten small children which is putting it nicely.
Terrance Howard might be nice. He can sing, dance, and act.
Not certain why you think this project is beneath Eastwood, unless you’re referring to the possible cast. If that’s the case, seriously?
I’ve seen every version. As much as I adore Beyonce, I think i’m done!
Wasn’t Basil Iwanyk producing this? Is he still involved? Or did somebody wake up to his uselessness?
can’t u read idiot basil hater? it’s right there in the article that he is still producing…
You can damn-well bet the farm that Eastwood’s “A Star Is Born” will at least get an nod from ‘Oscar.’
Is it April 1st already? No?
Well… Love Eastwood as a director. But Beyonce has proven countless times that she just isn’t a good actress. She really needs to focus on her strengths as a singer/performer and forget about acting entirely. I don’t understand Matthew Knowles insistence on making his daughter an award winning actress. She is already the biggest R&B Singer. One of the biggest Pop Stars. And one of the biggest World Wide names in music. He already has her shilling for random things like Crystal Geyser water and Vizio TV’s. Why can’t they be content with their current musical/advertising domination and save her the trouble of getting consistent bad acting reviews each time out?
She isn’t an actress. Period.
Don’t hold back! Tell how you really feel!
actually, beyonce was the best thing in that horrible movie “cadillac records”. this actually might be right up her alley, and i am not a fan of her acting ability. however, she is one of the nicest superstars in the world. give her a break people…
Absolutely agree. She was terrible in Obsessed, the movie Nikki mentions.
And does anyone remember her non-performance in “DreamGirls”? And yet it made her co-star, Jennifer Hudson, a star! (Now there’s a lady who can sing AND act.)
Beyonce was almost acceptable in “Cadillac Records” because she looked the part of Etta James, but her acting was awkward and obvious.
Her dad wants her to be the Diana Ross of the 21st Century but (for those of you who have seen the movies) Diana Ross actually had some charisma on screen, whereas Beyonce has none.
If anyone can coax a decent performance out of her, I am sure Clint can do it, but his one-take only approach will not work here.
I love to hear her sing but she is not an actress.
“Her dad wants her to be the Diana Ross of the 21st Century…”
Hmm, given that Diana only had one hit film, one could argue that moviewise, Diana Ross wasn’t the Diana Ross of the 20th Century.
Yeah, but she got an Oscar nomination for it! (Lady Sings the Blues), and she was also nominated for a golden globe in the early 90′s for a TV movie that she produced called “Out of Darkness”. Diana was no “flash in the pan”.
had to check the date, because this feels like an April Fools joke
I can’t wait.
I know what you’re thinking. “Did he sing six notes or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself.
Huh?
LOL. “six notes or five” a reference to six bullets or five from Dirty Harry. Excellent.
LOL! Great line from the first Dirty Harry, right? Harry drove a 68 Galaxie, and that line followed him shooting up a guy driving a 66 Galaxie. Just don’t make cars or actors like that any more.
that comment was so funny that i laughed for a long time
extremly creative
I am going to bet this be a 1950s style file with Beyonce playing a Dorothy Dandridge-like character
It would be so nice to read about a NEW idea for a movie for a change. I have lost count of the number of re-makes, re-boots and other repeats that pass for movies these days.
There’s no such thing as a new idea for a movie.
If you think I’m wrong, name four.
Social Network -somewhat of a new idea. Yes the subtext and plots aren’t original per say, but it’s fresh, it hasn’t been done before.
Just 4? Let’s go for a quick Baker’s Dozen:
Winter’s Bone
127 Hours
The Kids Are Alright
The King’s Speech
Inception
Somewhere
I Love You, Phillip Morris
Eat, Pray, Love
Get Him To The Greek
Cyrus
Easy A
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Holy Rollers
Perhaps he meant name 4 new ideas for a GOOD movie. LoL
Of those in your list that I’ve seen, Inception is the best, hands down. As for Eat, love, pray – it was an onscreen blog that went on too long, awful. Get him to the Greek – fair as far as somewhat entertaining goes. The kids are alright – um. Somewhere – dry. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World – total waste of film. I’ll have to check out some of the others.
Rather the movies were good or not wasn’t the point was it? So I agree with you, it is possible to come up with a NEW idea. Some Writers seem to have lost their edge, some Writers are catering to the limited imagination of their audience, and some Writers are just lazy.
wow, Clint Eastwood continues to surprise us and challenge our conception of what an Eastwood film should look like…i hope this one is more like “Bird” and a little less like “Honky Tonk Man”…
Ithought Honky Tonk Man was terrific. What was wrong with it?
Beyonce is FINE AS HELL, but she cannot act.
Neither could Vera Hruba Ralson, or even Pia Zadora for that matter.
Beyonce cannot act. Did I say she cannot act! Please get an actress for this part.
Beyonce needs to develop some acting chops because she is a destroyer of good characters.
“Clint can do anything”??? — except maybe make a decent movie out of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . . .
Beyonce reached her acting peak in that Austin Powers flick. Please stick to the day job, honey. And Clint…you should know better.
They should have cast Jennifer Hudson. She’s thin now.
Jennifer Hudson turned this movie down. She would have been great.
if that is true, j hudson should fire her whole team. she has little range as an actress and roles like this get you awards. couple that with the fact that there are very few starring roles for women and triple that for women of color. turning this down would be the dumbest move ever for j hudson. that has to be a mistake…
That was a big mistake, if true. But with her talent she will be alright. I would have gone to see it if she was in it.
I agree that Jennifer would have been great. She is attractive and can sing and act. I hope that Beyonce changes her mind, and Jennifer steps right on it, Okay
Jennifer Hudson would be great. Taraje Henson would have been great too. Both of these ladies have been up for oscars. Of course Jennifer won an oscar. They both can act and sing. JZ has so much money. I am sure he asked Clint to do this to get his wife an oscar. Money talks, non acting walks B.. Byonce always acts like she is afraid to open her mouth at interviews. She also acts like she is sooooo stuck on herself. Beauty is more than skin deep
Queenbey is the fucking best …she is not the best actor but she isnt bad at alll….cadlac record was amazing.
Wrong. Beyonce was good in Cadillac Records if you are stacking her performance up against some seventeen year old girl in the staged version at the Houston Boys and Girls Club. However, compared to Eamonn Walker, Mos Def or Jeffery Wright, people who were actually in the movie…then NO!
I’m wondering if Clint might turn this into a period piece set in the jazz world. Might have some possibilities. “The Bridges of 52nd Street”, anyone?
Wait a minute peeps – Beyonce was pretty amazing as Etta James
in CADILLAC RECORDS.
Hey, some one else how saw cadillac Blues..that makes two of us..Folks on this “insider” site should really do their homework..
No, she was OKAY as Etta in Cadillac Records. And lousy in every other movie.
You are wrong. She was not amazing. You just don’t know what you are talking about. Period!
